Household food practices and implications for food security and child feeding in Timor-Leste.

INTRODUCTION: Household food security and food preparation practices are shaped by social roles, caregiving responsibilities, and economic conditions. We examined everyday household food practices in Timor-Leste within systems of caregiving, authority, and resource constraints, and their implications for household food security and child feeding. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study from August to October 2025 using semi-structured, in-depth interviews with mothers who had caregiving responsibilities for children in their households across urban Dili and the rural municipali

Mental health conditions and hope: ex refugees of Timor Leste on the Indonesian border.

This study aims to determine the mental health conditions and levels of hope of ex-refugees from East Timor who chose to become Indonesian citizens during the 1999 referendum. The Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-42 and the Adult Hope Scale were used to assess the mental health conditions and levels of hope of 172 former East Timorese refugees, aged at least 37 years old and living at the border. The results showed that the mental health condition of former East Timorese refugees was good or normal. Despite experiencing various problems, several factors contribute to their good mental hea

The Economic Value of the Delivery of Primary Cleft Surgery in Timor Leste 2000-2017.

BACKGROUND: Plastic and reconstructive surgical teams visiting from Australia, a high-income country, have delivered cleft surgical services to Timor Leste since 2000 on a volunteer basis. This paper aims to estimate the economic benefit of correcting cleft deformities in this new nation as it evolved its healthcare delivery service from independence in 1999. METHODS: We have utilised a prospective database of all cleft surgical interventions performed during 44 plastic surgical missions over the last 18 years. The disability-adjusted life year (DALY) framework was used to calculate the total

A Neurocysticercosis Case from Timor-Leste, A Previously Unidentified Region of Human Taeniasis Endemicity.

Neurocysticercosis, a central nervous system infection caused by the zoonotic parasite Taenia solium, is a leading cause of acquired epilepsy worldwide. It is common in areas with extensive pig farming and pork consumption. This report presents an unusual case of neurocysticercosis in a 28-year-old male from Timor-Leste, a region of nonendemicity for human cases of Taenia solium. The patient, who had experienced seizures precipitated by headaches, was admitted to the hospital on June 15, 2020. Comprehensive examinations, including neuroimaging, identified multiple cystic lesions suggestive of

Changes in malaria vector bionomics in Timor Leste between 2009 and 2016; a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria was the leading cause of morbidity in Timor Leste in the past which gradually declined from 223,002 cases in 2006 to 14 cases in 2020, with zero malaria deaths since 2013 leading to malaria-free certification in June 2025. We compare the changes in vector bionomics due to implementation of vector control methods and other related environmental modifications in the country between 2009 and 2016. METHODS: Anopheline adults were collected from four sites using seven standard sampling methods in 2009 and 2016: full- and partial-night indoor human landing catches and outdoor hu

Trauma exposure, PTSD and psychotic-like symptoms in post-conflict Timor Leste: an epidemiological survey.

BACKGROUND: Studies in developed countries indicate that psychotic-like symptoms are prevalent in the community and are related to trauma exposure and PTSD. No comparable studies have been undertaken in low-income, post-conflict countries. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of psychotic-like symptoms in conflict-affected Timor Leste and to examine whether symptoms were associated with trauma and PTSD. METHODS: The Psychosis Screening Questionnaire and the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire (assessing trauma exposure and PTSD) were administered in an epidemiological survey of 1245 adults (res

Gastrointestinal Carriage of Antimicrobial Resistance in School-Aged Children in Three Municipalities of Timor-Leste.

Invasive bacterial infections are a leading cause of death in children, primarily in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Links between carriage of antimicrobial-resistant organisms and more resistant infections have been established; however, little has been reported regarding community carriage of antibiotic-resistant organisms such as extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales in LMIC. The aim of this study was to determine colonic carriage of ESBL-producing fluoroquinolone- and aminoglycoside-resistant Enterobacterales in healthy children in three municipalities of

Novel statistical approaches to identify risk factors for soil-transmitted helminth infection in Timor-Leste.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) are parasitic intestinal worms that infect almost a fifth of the global population. Sustainable control of STHs requires understanding the complex interaction of factors contributing to transmission. Identifying risk factors has mainly relied on logistic regression models where the underlying assumption of independence between variables is not always satisfied. Previously demonstrated risk factors including water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) access and behaviours, and socioeconomic status are intrinsically linked. Similarly, environmental factors including c

Are people-centred mental health services acceptable and feasible in Timor-Leste? A qualitative study.

People-centred mental healthcare is an influential concept for health system strengthening and sustainable development that has been developed and promoted primarily in Western contexts. It characterizes service users, families and communities as active participants in health system development. However, we have limited understanding of how well people-centred mental healthcare aligns with the multiplicity of peoples, cultures, languages and contexts in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Timor-Leste, a lower-middle income country in South-East Asia, is in the process of strengthening it

A qualitative study of risk factors related to child malnutrition in Aileu District, Timor-Leste.

Improvement in child nutritional status is one of the major health priorities in Timor-Leste. A qualitative study was conducted in Aileu District, adjacent to the capital of Timor-Leste, Dili, in September 2010 to determine the possible risk factors associated with the high prevalence of child malnutrition. In-depth interviews were conducted to 32 guardians of children aged younger than 5 years. It was observed that early termination of exclusive breast-feeding and a short lactation period along with an unsanitary living environment were associated with the nutritional status of children in th

Clinical intervention and molecular characteristics of a dengue hemorrhagic fever outbreak in Timor Leste, 2005.

In response to a January 2005 report of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Timor Leste, the World Health Organization sent a team to assist the National Hospital Guido Valadares (NHGV) in Dili with clinical case management and diagnostic support. The hospital reported 67 admissions including 8 deaths (case fatality rate approximately 12%) over the previous weeks with case histories clinically compatible with DHF. During the intervention, an additional 44 suspected dengue patients were admitted to the pediatric ward of NHGV. Among 41 patients with clinical diagnoses of dengue fever or DHF, 38 (9

A search for trachoma in Timor-Leste: no evidence to justify undertaking population-based prevalence surveys.

PURPOSE: We sought evidence to justify undertaking population-based trachoma surveys in Timor-Leste, believing that in the absence of such evidence, the country could be categorized as not needing interventions to eliminate trachoma. METHODS: We undertook a systematic review of published literature on trachoma in Timor-Leste, with results updated to 28 April 2018. We also undertook a series of clinic- and field-based screening exercises, consisting of: (1) in October 2015, conjunctival examination of all children attending a school in Vila, Atauro Island; (2) from 1 November 2016 to 30 April
