Tinea capitis in The Netherlands (Rotterdam area).

This retrospective study reviews the occurrence and treatment of various forms of tinea capitis at the out-patient clinic for Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology of the University Hospital Sophia/Dijkzigt over the period 1977-1988. Tinea capitis was diagnosed in 64 children. Trichophyton violaceum was the pathogen most frequently isolated, with Microsporum canis ranking second. The potassium hydroxide preparation was positive in 58% of the cases. Four cases showed a positive potassium hydroxide preparation with a negative culture. Immigrant children from Morocco were the largest group (61%).

Tinea capitis: diagnostic criteria and treatment options.

Tinea capitis is a fungal infection involving the hair shaft of the scalp. It is commonly referred to as ringworm and occurs primarily in children. Treatment with a systemic anti-fungal rather than topical treatment is required. Currently, two medications, griseofulvin (Grifulvin) and terbinafine (Lamisil Granules), are FDA-approved to treat tinea capitis. Treatment with griseofulvin is usually 6 to 8 weeks, while treatment with terbinafine requires 6 weeks. There are other medications currently not FDA-approved to treat tinea capitis that have similar cure rates and shorter durations of treat

Tinea capitis: current concepts in clinical practice.

Tinea capitis is a common infection, particularly among young children in urban regions. The infection often is seen in a form with mild scaling and little hair loss, a result of the prominence of Trichophyton tonsurans (the most frequent cause of tinea capitis in the United States). T. tonsurans does not fluoresce under Wood light, unlike the common tinea capitis-causing fungal organisms seen in Europe and many other countries, which emit a green fluorescence. However, T. tonsurans, like other fungi, also may less often produce an intense inflammatory reaction, which is suggestive of an acute

Tinea capitis among children of Ethiopian immigrants.

The incidence, clinical appearance and causative agent of tinea capitis among children of Ethiopian immigrants, was studied. Out of 124 children examined, 36 had scalp lesions and 32 cases were confirmed as scalp-ringworm on direct microscopy. Culture showed the dermatophyte to be Trichophyton violaceum. The clinical presentation, resembling seborrheic dermatitis, without clinically apparent hair invasion, was atypical.

Prevalence of tinea pedis, tinea unguium of toenails and tinea capitis in school children from Barcelona.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of tinea capitis, tinea pedis, and tinea unguium in children from several schools of Barcelona city. METHODS: During the period of 2003-2004, a prospective cross-sectional study was carried out in 1,305 children (9% immigrant population) between the ages 3 and 15 in 17 schools in Barcelona. A systematic examination of the feet, (including nails and scalp), was performed to identify lesions compatible with tinea. Cultures of scalp and feet samples were done and analysis of environmental samples was performed for dermatophyte isolation. RESULTS: Dermatophy

[Tinea capitis by Trichophyton tonsurans in a pediatric patient].

Tinea capitis (TC) is a superficial mycosis of the scalp, considered one of the most common dermatophyte infections in children. Until now, the species mainly described in our environment are Microsporum and secondly Trichophyton, which are contracted mainly by direct contact with infected animals or humans, respectively. We present the case of an 8-year-old patient with alopecia and inflammatory lesions of 2 years of evolution, finally reaching the diagnosis of inflammatory tinea capitis caused by T. tonsurans, an anthropophilic fungus considered rare in Argentina and emerging in the province

[Tinea capitis by Microsporum gypseum, an infrequent species].

Tinea capitis is considered the most frequent dermatophyte infection in children. The etiological agents vary from time to time and by geographical area, although they normally are zoophilic dermatophytes and in the last years also anthropophilic species. We report a clinical case of inflammatory tinea capitis in a 6-year-old child caused by Microsporum gypseum, a geophilic fungus pathogenic to humans and animals. The sources of human infection are soil, cats, dogs and small mammals. This species is less frequent as a cause of dermatophytosis in humans, described mainly in tinea corporis and r

Clinical specificities of Tinea capitis in Georgia population.

The aim of the study was to reveal peculiarities of the clinical symptoms and forms of Tinea capitis caused by etiological agents that are common in our country. The study was conducted on 176 ambulatory patients who approached the National Centre in 2009-2013. Inclusion criterion was simultaneous presence of clinical symptoms and positive result of microscopic study. For cultural examination was used Sabouraud's dextrose agar with the antibiotic chloramphenicol. Clinical manifestations were divided into inflammatory and non-inflammatory (i.e. slightly manifested inflammatory signs) lesions. 8

Tinea capitis in schoolchildren in southern Ivory Coast.

OBJECTIVES: Fungal infections of the scalp commonly affect the pediatric population. These infections are caused by dermatophytes that are able to invade the keratinized structures of skin, hair, and nails. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiology of fungal scalp infections in southern Ivory Coast during 2008-2009. METHODS: From October 2008 to July 2009, 17,745 children ranging in age from 4-16 years, attending urban and rural primary schools in seven towns in Ivory Coast, were examined clinically for tinea capitis. Hair stumps and scales were collected from children who showed symptoms

Acne keloidalis: a novel presentation for tinea capitis.

Acne keloidalis is characterized by firm skin-colored papules on the surface of the neck and scalp. We report a case of tinea capitis in 60-year-old female which mimicked acne keloidalis. The lesions resolved following oral antifungal medication.

An outbreak of tinea capitis in a child care centre.

We describe an outbreak of tinea capitis in a kindergarten. Individuals with relation to the institution were examined clinically and mycologically (n-98), Microsporum audouinii was cultured from 12 people, out of whom eight patients had tinea capitis, four patients had tinea corporis, and three patients had both. The problems with spread of anthropophilic infections and the difficulties with treatment of Microsporum dermatophytes are discussed.

Griseofulvin and terbinafine in the treatment of tinea capitis in children.

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of griseofulvin and terbinafine in the treatment of tinea capitis in children. METHOD: Twenty four consecutive patients with culture proven tinea capitis were treated randomly with griseofulvin (10 mg/kg/day for 8 weeks) or terbinafine (62.5-250 mg/day for 4 weeks). Outcome was determined by absence of clinical signs, hair regrowth or negative mycology. RESULTS: Twenty four patients (16 male, 8 female) were treated. Age ranged between 2 and 15 years (mean 4.8). Seven patients presented with kerion, the remainder with a scaling and patchy alopecia pattern of

[Tinea capitis presenting as staphylococcal pyodermatitis of the scalp].

Two severe cases of pyoderma (staphylococcus aureus) of the scalp, resistant to appropriate antibiotic treatment, proved to be due to exotic dermatophytes (Trichophyton soudanense and Trichophyton violaceum) in two North African children living in France. Both cases exemplify the growing number of Tinea capitis due to anthropophilic species imported from Africa by immigrated populations, their sometimes atypical clinical presentation and their familial epidemiology. Fungal cultures and identification procedures are essential for the diagnosis and epidemiological investigation of such cases.

Tinea capitis in the adult: two case studies.

The authors describe two cases of tinea capitis in adults, one due to Microsporum canis and the other to Trichophyton rubrum. The atypical clinical presentation of the dermatophytosis in these two cases is stressed. It is hypothesized that in both cases the disease spread from primary lesion on the face.
