Candida zeylanoides caused candidiasis as tinea cruris in 4 cases. Candida zeylanoides were characterized by good growth of the strain in malt medium, potato dextrose agar and Sabourard's agar. Their colony was milky white and greasy with smooth surface. The diameter of the colony reaches 12 mm within a week. As candida type pseudohyphae but not hyphae, they do not produce ascospore and bolospore. Carbon sources fermentation showed positive results. Nitrogen sources assimilation agar (KNO3) negative, arbutin agar negative, nonvitamin medium positive. G+C mol% value of their DNA was 51.24. Anim…

BACKGROUND: Tinea indecisiva is characterized by concentric scaly rings simulating tinea imbricata but caused by dermatophytes other than Trichophyton concentricum.
OBJECTIVE: Tinea indecisiva has been rarely reported. We report a unique case and review of the previously reported cases, pathogenesis, and management.
METHODS: An adult Indian man developed extensive tinea cruris and tinea corporis with concentric rings of scaly lesions over the groin, buttocks, and thighs following the use of oral corticosteroids and antifungal-steroid cream for 3 months. Mycologic and immunologic studies were…

The authors studied 31 patients with Tinea cruris, corporis or pedis interdigital. The patients were treated with 100 mg of itraconazole, once a day, during the lunch, for 15 days. Mycological and clinical evaluations were performed at the pre-treatment, by the end of treatment and 2 weeks after finishing the treatment. The results showed that itraconazole is effective for the treatment of dermatophytosis, at the studied posology, with 100% of mycological cure. Clinical evaluation showed a significant reduction (Friedman test--p less than 0.001) of signs and symptoms.

Thirty-five dermatologists enrolled 256 patients to assess the safety and efficacy of ketoconazole 2 percent cream, applied once daily, in the treatment of tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis. Of these, 232 were eligible for efficacy evaluation based on mycologic evidence. Symptoms were assessed after four and eight weeks of treatment; relapse was assessed four weeks after the end of treatment. Total symptom scores decreased significantly during the treatment period. A marked or excellent response to treatment was observed in 82 percent of the cases. At the end of treatment 113 patie…

We studied the effectiveness of short-term treatment of tinea corporis and tinea cruris with oral terbinafine at 250 mg/day for 2-3 days. The treatment on an open study basis consisted of two groups: the first group (n=17) was given 250 mg/day for two consecutive days, and the second group (n=24) was given the same dose for three consecutive days. No patient was treated topically. Effectiveness was evaluated at the end of the second week both clinically and mycologically (KOH examination and culture). In the two-day group, five cases showed an excellent response, three had a good response and …

Butenafine is a new antifungal agent similar to allyl amine antifungals. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in 75 patients to compare its efficacy with clotrimazole in tinea cruris and corporis that was diagnosed on clinical features and demonstration of hyphae in a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation. Twenty patients treated with butenafine once daily for 2 weeks and 20 treated with clotrimazole twice daily for 4 weeks were analysed. At the end of treatment, 2 weeks and 4 weeks later, the KOH preparation was negative in 90.9%, 95.5% and 90.9% of patients respectively in the butenaf…

A case of an epidemic by Tinea cruris and Tinea pedis in a tyre factory in Sicily is reported. There was noticeable spread of the causative agents throughout the environment. They were mainly transmitted by wash-basins in the footbaths, by footboards of showers and in smaller numbers by towels. Trichosporon beigelii was the most common fungus isolated from the environment, followed by Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Candida parapsilosis and Geotrichum candidum.

Granuloma annulare (GA) is a benign, self-limited skin disease of unknown etiology characterized by annular, flesh-colored to erythematous grouped papules or plaques. Lesions of GA are typically located on the lateral or dorsal surfaces of the hands and feet, arms, thighs, and trunk. We present the case of a patient with GA who presented with erythematous, annular plaques localized to the bilateral inguinal folds, mimicking tinea cruris. On clinical examination, the lesions were thought to be tinea cruris. A subsequent punch biopsy revealed the lesions to be granuloma annulare. This case highl…

Eczema herpeticum (EH) has been reported in association with various skin abnormalities. We experienced a patient with tinea cruris who developed EH within a fungal infection. To our knowledge, dermatophyte infection as an underlying cutaneous disorder for EH has not been previously described in the English literature.

Among 250 patients with tinea cruris (160 males, 90 females) lesions of both tinea pedis and tinea unguium were found in 221 and lesions of only tinea pedis in another 25. The four children were free of associated dermatophytic lesions. The predominant causative agent was T. rubrum, which was also found to be responsible for the hairy area invasion of the beard and pubis in 12 patients and for the widespread lesions of tinea corporis in 10 patients with lymphoma. None of these patients had noticed the discrete nail and foot involvement. It is therefore recommended that all patients with tinea …

The increasing worldwide resistance to terbinafine and older antifungal drugs, coupled with often erratic clinical responses to itraconazole, leaves dermatologists with limited options to deal with dermatophytic infections. Recalcitrant dermatophytoses has however, over past few years, become a significant public health issue, especially in India. In this context, we present a patient who failed four systemic antifungals sequentially and was subsequently cured with a 2 week course of voriconazole, an antifungal not routinely used for dermatophytoses as yet.
