[Evaluation of some clinic data in patients with tinea versicolor].

Fungi from Malassezia species may be a component of human and animal skin onthocenosis but also may cause general mycoses in patients from high risk groups. The aim of study was the evaluation of some clinic data in patients with tinea versicolor, who entered to Department of Biology and Medical Parasitology, Centre for Treatment of Parasitic Diseases and Mycoses, Medical University of Lodz. Forty four patients with tinea versicolor were examined. Localization and number of skin lesions as well as eventually risk factor were examined. In all patients mycological examine was done; morphotic ele

Successful Treatment of Tinea Versicolor With Salicylic Acid 30% Peel.

BACKGROUND: Tinea versicolor is a common superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia species. It typically affects the trunk and proximal upper extremities and is treated with topical or oral antifungal medications. Treatment may be limited by patient preference or logistical constraints, especially in cases of extensive cutaneous involvement, where topical application may be challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old active duty female with extensive tinea versicolor, likely precipitated by military training in hot and humid conditions, presented to the dermatology clinic. Langerhans cell accumulation in chronic tinea pedis and pityriasis versicolor.

Persistence of chronic tinea pedis (CTP) and pityriasis (tinea) versicolor (PIVE) has been tentatively attributed to an impaired cellular immune response. Therefore immunophenotyping of the inflammatory infiltrates in both disorders was performed in order to detect possible defects in cellular defence. The results of the present study show a dominance of memory T cells, an accumulation of macrophages and lack of B cells. A very prominent feature in CTP and especially PIVE was a marked accumulation of Langerhans cells (LCs) in the epidermis, mostly without expression of CD4. Furthermore, reduce

Double-blind efficacy study of selenium sulfide in tinea versicolor.

Selenium sulfide (2.5%) lotion applied daily for 10 minutes for 7 consecutive days was found to be an effective therapeutic agent, significantly superior to the vehicle, in a double-blind study in the treatment of tinea versicolor. Mild transitory contact dermatitis of the primary irritant type occurred in all the treatment groups and was apparently due to the detergent base.

White piedra, black piedra, tinea versicolor, and tinea nigra: contribution to the diagnosis of superficial mycosis.

Superficial mycoses are fungal infections restricted to the stratum corneum and to the hair shafts, with no penetration in the epidermis; they are: white piedra, black piedra, tinea versicolor, and tinea nigra. This study presents images of mycological tests performed in the laboratory, as well as exams performed at the authors office, in order to improve the dermatologist's knowledge about the diagnosis of these dermatoses, which are common in many countries.

Phenotypic characterization in situ of inflammatory cells in pityriasis (tinea) versicolor.

The cellular response in pityriasis (tinea) versicolor lesions was analysed in situ with an immunohistochemical double staining technique combined with periodic acid-Schiff staining in frozen sections of skin biopsies from 9 patients. The proportions of B and T cells and subpopulations of T cells in the blood were normal as were the proliferative responses of blood mononuclear cells against various B- and T-cell mitogens and antigens. Fungi were observed in stratum corneum in all lesions, and there were moderate cell infiltrates in both epidermis and dermis as compared to biopsies from normal-

Tinea Versicolor in a Three-Month Infant: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Tinea versicolor (TV) is a superficial fungal disease caused by Malassezia furfur, most commonly affecting adolescents and adults. TV is uncommon among newborns, particularly those aged under one year. Poor hygiene and perspiration, immunosuppression, the use of oils and greasy lotions, hyperhidrosis, and corticosteroids may all contribute to the appearance of the condition. It is clinically distinguished by hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation. Most often, it occurs over the trunk. Treatment for TV usually begins with the use of a topical antifungal. This case report presents a rare TV in a

Anxiety and depression in patients with pityriasis rosea compared to patients with tinea versicolor.

BACKGROUND: Few researchers have specifically evaluated how the quality of life of patients with pityriasis rosea (PR) and tinea versicolor (TV) are affected. There are even less studies exploring the psychological status of these patients. The objective of this study was to investigate and compare quality of life and psychological status of patients with PR and TV. METHOD: Thirty-six patients with pityriasis rosea and 43 patients with tinea versicolor (N = 79) were selected for the study. All patients were required to complete Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) and Hospital Anxiety and De

Tinea versicolor and Pityrosporum orbiculare: mycological investigations, experimental infections and epidemiological surveys.

In patients with tinea versicolor, Pityrosporum orbiculare was cultured from tinea versicolor lesions in 100%, from normal-looking skin in 80%, and from apparently healed lesions in 69%. P. orbiculare was isolated from normal skin in 85% of patients with seborrheic dermatitis and in 90% of volunteers. The best substrate for isolation of P. orbiculare was a peptone-glucose-yeast extract medium containing glycerol monostearate and Tween 80, overlaid with olive oil. Germ tubes were produced when P. orbiculare was incubated in an atmosphere containing air with 7% CO2. Cultures of P. orbiculare and

An open, multicentre assessment of the effectiveness of bifonazole in the treatment of tinea (pityriasis) versicolor.

One hundred and twenty-one patients with tinea (pityriasis) versicolor, confirmed by pretherapeutic clinical and mycological examination, were treated with a single daily application of bifonazole (BAY h 4502) 1% gel for 2 weeks. Weekly clinical controls were performed during the treatment period and at least two clinical and mycological post-therapeutic controls were given. Overall results were very good in 98 patients, good in 15, moderate in 7 and failure in 1 patient. Local tolerance was very good; only 1 patient presented with slight erythema and pruritus during the treatment.

Blad-containing oligomer: a novel fungicide used in crop protection as an alternative treatment for tinea pedis and tinea versicolor.

PURPOSE: The lack of novel antifungal drugs and the increasing incidence and severity of fungal infections are major concerns worldwide. Herein, we tested the activity of the Blad-containing oligomer (BCO), a new antifungal molecule already in use for agriculture, on Malassezia spp. and dermatophytes, the causal agents of human tinea versicolor and tinea pedis. Given the lack of a standard method for Malassezia susceptibility testing and the plethora of published methods, we also developed an improved method for this genus. METHODOLOGY: The efficacy of BCO was assessed in vitro and compared t

Oral Malassezia infection co-occurring with tinea versicolor: metagenomic sequencing of the saliva.

Malassezia is a lipid-dependent cutaneous symbiotic fungal genus associated with tinea versicolor. Here, we first present a rare case of a young tinea versicolor patient with oral manifestations presenting as white strips, patches, and pigmentation. The patient had a family history of tinea versicolor and a habit of frequent intake of cream. Histopathologic features and periodic acid-schiff staining of oral lesion indicated oral infection with round budding yeasts with short hyphae. Saliva metagenomic sequencing identified Malassezia and demonstrated the upregulated amount, diversity and activ

Age-Related Clinical Patterns and Presentations of Tinea Versicolor: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Tinea versicolor (TV) is a common superficial fungal infection caused by Malassezia species. While generally considered a condition of young adults, TV can affect individuals across a wide age spectrum. However, age-specific clinical presentations and patterns have not been well characterized in the literature. Understanding how TV presents across different age groups could inform clinical diagnosis and management strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the clinical presentations of TV across different age groups and identify age-related patterns in lesion type, di

Efficacy of Itraconazole in the Prevention of Recurrence of Tinea Versicolor: A Three Year Follow Up.

Pityriasis versicolor (PV) also known as tinea versicolor, which is chronic and superficial fungal skin disease caused by Malassezia yeasts. A permanent cure may difficult to achieve and this may explain the long-term nature of the disease. Consequently, a preventive treatment regimen may help to prevent the recurrence of pityriasis versicolor. Whether, the recurrence of tinea versicolor could be prevented by monthly itraconazole treatment regimen after a short course of itraconazole therapy. Open treatment followed by a randomized, single blind placebo control trial. Multi-center trial was ch

Expression of antimicrobial peptides and toll-like receptors is increased in tinea and pityriasis versicolor.

In superficial tinea and pityriasis versicolor, the causative fungi are for the most part confined to the stratum corneum which is barely reached by leukocytes. Therefore, a role of non-cellular components in the epidermal antifungal defence was suggested. To investigate the presence of such factors in these infections, the expression of human beta defensins 2 and 3 (hBD-2, hBD-3), RNase 7, psoriasin, toll-like receptors 2, 4 and 9 (TLR2, TLR4 and TLR9) and dectin 2 was analysed by use of immunostainings in skin biopsies. We found that hBD2, hBD3, psoriasin, RNase7, TLR2 and TLR4 were signific
