OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Tinnitus Impact Questionnaire (TIQ), whose questions focus on assessing the impact of tinnitus on the patient's day to day activities, mood, and sleep, and not on hearing difficulties.
DESIGN: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study.
STUDY SAMPLE: Data were included for 172 adult patients who attended a tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic in the UK within a six-month period and who had completed the TIQ.
RESULTS: Two items whose scores were very highly correlated with those for other items were removed, leaving seven items. Explor

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory tinnitus represents a clinically significant subgroup of chronic tinnitus. Although not completely understood, increasing evidence suggests interactivity between the somatosensory and auditory systems is responsible for both the development and maintenance of tinnitus.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to provide an overview of the evaluation of somatosensory tinnitus and to propose an examination protocol to support the diagnosis and treatment of this patient group.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In addition to patient history, various clinical examination maneuvers are

This article provides an update on tinnitus for audiologists and other clinicians who provide tinnitus-specific services. Tinnitus can be attributable to hearing loss, somatosensory system dysfunction, or auditory cortex dysfunction, with hearing loss being the most common cause and serious underlying pathologies being rare. Hearing loss does not always lead to tinnitus, and patients with tinnitus do not always suffer from hearing loss. The first scenario is explained by a so-called inhibitory gating mechanism, whereas the second assumes that all tinnitus sufferers have some degree of hearing

This article reviews the use of human neuroimaging for chronic subjective tinnitus. Evidence-based guidance on the clinical use of imaging to identify relevant auditory lesions when evaluating tinnitus patients is given. After introducing the anatomy and imaging modalities most pertinent to the neuroscience of tinnitus, the article reviews tinnitus-associated alterations in key auditory and nonauditory networks in the central nervous system. Emphasis is placed on how these findings support proposed models of tinnitus and how this line of investigation is relevant to practicing clinicians.

Objective tinnitus is a known but rare otologic symptom. This is a case report about a six-year-old boy, who was referred to a hearing clinic for further investigation of an audible clicking sound. He experienced clicking sounds, and his parents were able to hear the sounds when listening nearby. This objective tinnitus is caused by myoclonus of either the m. tensor tympani or the m. stapedius. We discuss methods to evaluate objective tinnitus including the clinical use of a stethoscope and also the possibility of using impedance measuring in patients with objective tinnitus.

Tinnitus can be caused or triggered by functional disorders of the cervical spine, temporomandibular joint or any other musculoskeletal structure of the neck or head. This special form of tinnitus is called somatosensory tinnitus and represents a discrete subgroup among the different kinds of tinnitus. Distinctive for this kind of tinnitus are alterations in volume and frequency during movement or the stimulation of certain muscles and joints. This can be evaluated using a structured testing method. To be able to easily perceive tinnitus modulations, the test must be performed in total silence

Tinnitus, the perception of sound with no external auditory stimulus, is a complex, multifaceted, and potentially devastating disorder. Despite recent advances in our understanding of tinnitus, there are limited options for effective treatment. Tinnitus treatments are made more complicated by the lack of a test for tinnitus based on objectively measured physiological characteristics. Such an objective test would enable a greater understanding of tinnitus mechanisms and may lead to faster treatment development in both animal and human research. This review makes the argument that an objective t

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of tinnitus treatments on sleep disorders in patients with tinnitus.
DESIGN: Subjects completed the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), and State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The questionnaire results and the patients' sex, age, time since the onset of tinnitus, and mean hearing level were examined, and differences between a sleep disorder group and a normal sleep group were examined. Patients completed the questionnaires again after initiating tinnitus treatments (counselling and use

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus is a highly prevalent hearing disorder, and the burden of tinnitus diagnosis and treatment is very heavy, especially in China. In order to better benefit the majority of tinnitus patients, we developed a new mobile app based on our patented invention - named the Fudan Tinnitus Relieving System (FTRS) - for tinnitus management. The FTRS app aims to alleviate patients' tinnitus symptoms using customized sound therapy, to evaluate the treatment effect, to provide a doctor-patient communication platform, and to support tinnitus rehabilitation and auditory health.

Introduction Tinnitus etiopathogenesis is still unclear and treatment options are controversial despite current advances in medicine. Objectives To analyze the correlation between patients' symptom scores, systemic inflammation, and trombosis biomarkers. Methods In this prospective study, we evaluated the degree of complaints of subjective tinnitus patients with the tinnitus severity index (TSI) and tinnitus handicap inventory (THI), and correlated these symptom scores with hematological parameters such as the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean thromboc

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus refers to auditory phantom sensation. It is estimated that for 2% of the population this auditory phantom percept severely affects the quality of life, due to tinnitus related distress. Although the overall distress levels do not differ between sexes in tinnitus, females are more influenced by distress than males. Typically, pain, sleep, and depression are perceived as significantly more severe by female tinnitus patients. Studies on gender differences in emotional regulation indicate that females with high depressive symptoms show greater attention to emotion, and use les

This perspective reviews the current state of the art and literature on tinnitus in children, prevalence and risk factors, clinical management, and future priorities for healthcare provision and research. Most research in the field to date appears to be prevalence studies, which have reached dramatically different estimates; this reflects the lack of a standard language when asking about the presence of tinnitus, or how bothersome, distressing, or negatively impacting it is for the child. Estimates are also likely affected by a lack of awareness of tinnitus amongst children and parents. Childr

Tinnitus is correlated with anomalies of neural plasticity and has been found to be affected by inflammatory status. The current theories on tinnitus, although still somewhat incomplete, are based on maladaptive plasticity mechanisms. Astrocytes play a major role in both neural responses to inflammation and plasticity regulation; moreover, they have recently been discovered to encode "context" for neuronal circuits, which is similar to the "expectation" of Bayesian brain models. Therefore, this narrative review explores the possible and likely roles of astrocytes in the neural mechanisms leadi

Tinnitus is generally defined as the perception of sound in the absence of vibration of an external elastic body. If this definition appears useful to differentiate tinnitus from somatosounds, it is not suitable for distinguishing it from psychiatric hallucinations. Nor does this solution define a temporal limit of duration of the perception, which is important for distinguishing pathological tinnitus from those occasional noises that we all perceive from time to time. A complete definition appears necessary not only to achieve homogeneity in epidemiological studies but also to set up correct
