Tissue adhesives for traumatic lacerations in children and adults.

BACKGROUND: Tissue adhesives have been used for many years to close simple lacerations as an alternative to standard wound closure (sutures, staples, adhesive strips). They offer many potential advantages over standard wound closure, including ease of use, decrease in pain and time to apply, as well as not requiring a follow-up visit for removal. Many studies have compared tissue adhesives and standard wound closure to determine the cosmetic outcome as well as these other secondary outcomes in their respective study populations. However, due to the wide variation in study parameters, there are

Irritation test of tissue adhesives for facial prostheses.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Adhesives are commonly used to improve the retention of a facial prosthesis to the skin. Although no requirement exists for facial prosthetic adhesives, an adhesive should be nonirritating and nontoxic. PURPOSE: This study assessed the irritative potential of facial prosthetic adhesives by using an in vitro technique for detection of eye-irritating chemicals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten adhesives were evaluated by the hens egg test chorioallantoic membrane method. Adhesives were applied to the chorioallantoic membrane in fertilized hen eggs, and the membrane examined by a

A smart adhesive Janus hydrogel for non-invasive cardiac repair and tissue adhesion prevention.

Multifunctional hydrogel with asymmetric and reversible adhesion characteristics is essential to handle the obstructions towards bioapplications of trauma removal and postoperative tissue synechia. Herein, we developed a responsively reversible and asymmetrically adhesive Janus hydrogel that enables on-demand stimuli-triggered detachment for efficient myocardial infarction (MI) repair, and synchronously prevents tissue synechia and inflammatory intrusion after surgery. In contrast with most irreversibly and hard-to-removable adhesives, this Janus hydrogel exhibited a reversible adhesion capabi

Mitochondria-Loaded Janus Cardiac Patch for Myocardial Infarction Repair and Prevention of Tissue Adhesions.

Mitochondrial dysfunction triggers cardiomyocyte injury and death after myocardial infarction (MI), and mitochondrial delivery via cardiac patches offers a promising strategy to restore mitochondrial function, thereby improving myocardial repair. However, current patches lack stable wet adhesion and are often monofunctional, failing to prevent tissue adhesion. Herein, we developed a Janus cardiac patch by combining bioadhesive and electrospun nanofibers. The inner layer exhibited strong wet adhesion with an adhesive strength of 55 kPa and interfacial toughness of 214 J m-2, significantly surpa

Native paraneurial tissue and paraneurial adhesions alter nerve strain distribution in rat sciatic nerves.

Paraneurial adhesions have been implicated in the pathological progression of entrapment neuropathies. Surgical decompression of adhesions is often performed, with the intent of restoring nerve kinematics. The normal counterpart of adhesions, native paraneurium, is also thought to influence nerve deformation and mobility. However, influences of native or abnormal paraneurial structures on nerve kinematics have not been investigated. We measured regional strains in rat sciatic nerves before and immediately after decompression of native paraneurial tissue, and before and after decompression of a

A "Janus" Zwitterionic Hydrogel Patch for Tissue Repair and Prevention of Post-Operative Adhesions.

Anti-peritoneal adhesions (PA) are very important after abdominal surgery for that PA often leads to other medical problems and imposes a huge financial burden on the national healthcare system. In this work, a "Janus" zwitterionic hydrogel patch where one side can adhere firmly to the tissue, while the other side has anti-fouling properties and has little interaction with the surrounding tissue has been developed. The "Janus" hydrogel patch is prepared by in situ formation of a bonding polymer layer poly(acrylic-co-N-hydroxysuccinimide acrylate) on one side of zwitterionic hydrogel. The mecha

Hydrogel-tissue adhesion by particle bridging: sensitivity to interfacial wetting and tissue composition.

Solid particles placed at the interface between hydrogels and biological tissues can create an adhesive joint through the adsorption of macromolecules onto their surfaces. Here, we investigated how this adhesion by particle bridging depends on the wetting of tissue surfaces and on the heterogeneities in tissue composition. Ex vivo peeling experiments were performed using poly(ethylene glycol) films coated with aggregates of silica nanoparticles deposited on the internal tissues of porcine liver. We show that the adhesion produced by particle bridging is altered by the presence of fluid wetting

Injectable Hydrogel Adhesive with Rapid In Situ Gelation and Robust Tissue Adhesion for Emergency Hemorrhage Control.

Uncontrolled bleeding after severe trauma poses a major challenge to existing tissue adhesives primarily due to their inadequate wet adhesion, sluggish bonding kinetics, insufficient mechanical strength, and potential cytotoxicity. Here, we report the development of an injectable and biocompatible hydrogel adhesive based on a unique catalyst-free cross-linked network of poly(disulfide)s. The incorporation of melanin nanoparticles (CINP) within the hydrogel matrix enhances its cross-linking density, thereby strengthening its tissue binding capabilities and imparting exceptional mechanical prope

A self-fused peptide-loaded hydrogel with injectability and tissue-adhesiveness for preventing postoperative peritoneal adhesions.

Peritoneal adhesions commonly occur following abdominal or pelvic surgery and can cause serious complications. Currently, physical barriers are the primary approach used in clinical practice to prevent adhesion, although their effectiveness is frequently inadequate. In this study, we developed an injectable peptide-loaded hydrogel with multiple functions, including self-fusion, tissue-adhesiveness, anti-inflammation, anti-cell adhesion and anti-angiogenesis. To assess the effectiveness of these hydrogels, which are stabilized by dynamic imine bonds and acetal connections, in preventing postope

Wisdom across interfaces: Adhesion mechanism and application potential of wet-adhesive hydrogel in periodontal tissue.

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of periodontal tissues closely linked to systemic health, presents significant therapeutic challenges due to the dynamic and moist microenvironment of these tissues. Current local therapeutic systems lack adaptability to this unique microenvironment, making it difficult to guarantee treatment efficacy at the target site. Wet-adhesive hydrogels, with their exceptional tissue adhesion and multifunctionality, demonstrate tremendous potential as emerging materials for periodontitis treatment. In this review, we systematically summarize recent advances

Robust Janus Hydrogel with Wet-Tissue Adhesive Properties for Wound Dressing and Anti-Postoperative Adhesion.

Although adhesive hydrogels have advanced rapidly in recent years, conventional double-sided adhesives still face challenges in achieving effective adhesion to wet tissues and preventing postoperative tissue adhesion. In this study, a novel Janus hydrogel wet adhesive was successfully designed by precisely regulating the distribution of free hydroxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups on the two surfaces of the hydrogel. The resulting Janus hydrogel exhibits significantly different adhesive and nonadhesive properties on its upper and lower surfaces. Specifically, through a simple boric acid (BA) sol

Janus-Structured Microgel Barrier with Tissue Adhesive and Hemostatic Characteristics for Efficient Prevention of Postoperative Adhesion.

Postoperative adhesion (POA) is a common and serious complication following various types of surgery. Current physical barriers either have a short residence time at the surgical site with a low tissue attachment capacity or are prone to undesired adhesion formation owing to the double-sided adhesive property, which limits the POA prevention efficacy of the barriers. In this study, Janus-structured microgels (Janus-MGs) with asymmetric tissue adhesion capabilities are fabricated using a novel bio-friendly gas-shearing microfluidic platform. The anti-adhesive side of Janus-MGs, which consists o
