BACKGROUND: A serology testing for infectious diseases (HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis) is mandatory in tissue donors. In many donors postmortem blood is the only sample available. Even though serological tests and nucleic acid amplification tests (NAT) used are validated for postmortem blood, a characterization of those blood samples is not yet established. AIMS: To evaluate the feasibility, efficacy and postoperative complications of Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK) with paediatric donor tissue.
METHODS: Retrospective non-comparative interventional case series. Seven consecutive cases (seven eyes) of pseudophakic bullous keratopathy were treated with DSEK using paediatric donor tissue and followed up for 12 to 18 months. Data collected included best spectacle-corrected visual acuity, spherical equivalent refractive error, corneal astigmatism, corneal curvature and endothelial cell density.

Given that it is possible to extract DNA from the urine of kidney transplant donors and recipients we studied whether the donor HLA type can be determined from recipient urine. This would be useful especially when there is limited information on donors or when the transplant was performed long ago when tissue typing was less precise. This study aimed to verify the prevalence of IgG antibodies for Toxoplasma gondii, CMV, and EBV in tissue donors from different regions of Brazil between February 2016 and July 2017. In this retrospective study, 578 donors were evaluated from different regions of Brazil. The seroprevalence of T. gondii was 61.2%, CMV was 93%, and EBV was 98.3%. The seroprevalence increased with age, from 27.8% in donors younger than 18 years of age to 67.6% in those older than 60 years of age (p<0.05).
