Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation after smokeless tobacco (Maras powder) use.

Use of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco is a considerable public health problem. In Turkey, a type of smokeless tobacco called Maras powder (MP) is widely used in the Southeastern region. We present a case of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation that was suspected to be caused by the use of MP, which has never previously been noted in the literature. A 46-year-old man was admitted to our emergency department with angina pectoris and palpitation. He was a long time cigarette smoker and had begun using MP the fortnight before. Electrocardiography showed atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular respo

Cost-effectiveness of self-help smokeless tobacco cessation programs.

This study assessed the cost-effectiveness of two low-intensity programs for quitting smokeless tobacco, based on results of a randomized trial with 1,069 volunteer participants. Cost data were collected for two levels of intervention: manual only (a self-help manual) and assisted self-help (the manual plus a videotape and two supportive phone calls from tobacco cessation counselors). Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were calculated for assisted self-help vs. quitting on one's own, using the manual-only quit rate and data from another study as alternative proxies for no intervention. Health effects associated with smokeless tobacco: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: It is believed that health risks associated with smokeless tobacco (ST) use are lower than those with cigarette smoking. A systematic review was therefore carried out to summarise these risks. METHODS: Several electronic databases were searched, supplemented by screening reference lists, smoking related websites, and contacting experts. Analytical observational studies of ST use (cohorts, case-control, cross sectional studies) with a sample size of >/=500 were included if they reported on one or more of the following outcomes (all cause mortality, oral and pharyngeal cancers, othe

Smokeless tobacco use and health effects among baseball players.

The effects of smokeless tobacco (ST) use were studied in 1109 members of major and minor league professional baseball teams during spring training in 1988. The prevalence of current ST use was 39%. The median age at initiation among users was 18 years, and the median duration of use was 5 years. Among users, 75% cited a snuff brand as their usual ST product. Oral leukoplakia was present in 46% (196/423) of current-week ST users and 1.4% (7/493) of nonusers (odds ratio, 60; 95% confidence interval, 28 to 130). Prevalence of oral leukoplakia among ST users increased with hours used per day and

Smokeless Tobacco Pouch Keratosis: A Report of Two Cases.

Tobacco pouch keratosis (TPK) is a white lesion caused by chronic contact with smokeless tobacco (SLT) on the oral mucosa. The lesion develops as a result of chronic tobacco chewing or snuff dipping. The lesion exhibits precancerous characteristics; thus, dentists must educate patients about the dangers of tobacco use and advise them to quit. This article discusses the clinical findings of a 17-year-old adolescent boy and a 48-year-old man who were SLE users diagnosed with TPK and nicotine replacement therapy to averse from the SLT chewing habit due to nicotine dependence. The novelty of this

Smokeless tobacco cessation guidelines for health professionals in England.

Smokeless tobacco is used in the UK predominantly by members of the Indian, Pakistani and especially Bangladeshi communities. The most commonly used form is tobacco mixed with lime and additional psychoactive compounds, most notably areca nut. The resulting "quid" is chewed or held in the mouth. Studies from Asia indicate that use of this kind of product is linked with an increased risk of oral cancers and possibly low birth-weight infants. There is little high quality research evaluating interventions to promote cessation of smokeless tobacco use, especially of the forms used in the UK. Howev

The health impact of smokeless tobacco products: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The objective was to systematically review studies on health outcomes from smokeless tobacco (SLT) products. METHODS: We analysed published literature on the health outcomes from SLT use between 01/01/2015 to 01/02/2020, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol using PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Google Scholar. RESULTS: Of 53 studies included, six were global, 32 from Asia, Middle East and Africa (AMEA), nine from USA and six from Europe. 'Poor'-rated studies predominated (23;43%), in particular, for global (4;66%) and AMEA (

Smokeless tobacco and oral cancer: a review of the risks and determinants.

Smokeless tobacco has been associated with oral cancer for many decades. The purpose of this article is to review research relevant to this association, including epidemiologic studies, studies of putative carcinogens such as tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) and other contaminants, and possible cancer inhibitors. Epidemiologic studies addressing this issue primarily consist of case-control studies. They show that the use of chewing tobacco and moist snuff is associated with very low risks for cancers of the oral cavity and related structures (relative risks [RR] from 0.6 to 1.7). The use

Smokeless tobacco and periodontitis: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

AIM: The present systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to investigate the global association between smokeless tobacco (SLT) use and periodontitis, considering significant effect size variation based on the income levels of countries. METHODS: We searched seven databases to identify studies that assessed the prevalence of periodontitis in adult SLT users compared to non-users. The quality of studies was evaluated using the 10-item risk-of-bias tool, and publication bias was addressed through the trim-and-fill method. Sensitivity analysis utilized the leave-one-out approach. Meta-analysis

Physical and chemical characterization of smokeless tobacco products in India.

The rapid proliferation of smokeless tobacco (SLT) in India has occurred without adequate information on the possible dangers and toxicity of these products. Tobacco flavors as well as nicotine (both protonated and un-protonated) are responsible for health dangers and addiction. The study aimed to offer information on the physical characteristics of commonly used smokeless tobacco products (including microscopic analysis), along with nicotine content (both total and un-protonated), pH, moisture, and flavors. The Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) validated by the World Health Organization (W

Smokeless tobacco use and cancer of the upper respiratory tract.

The most recent epidemiologic review of the cancer risks associated with smokeless tobacco use appeared in 1986, when 10 studies were available. This review describes 21 published studies, 20 of which are of the case-control type. We characterize each study according to the specific anatomic sites and according to the type of smokeless tobacco products for which it provides relative risks of cancer. The use of moist snuff and chewing tobacco imposes minimal risks for cancers of the oral cavity and other upper respiratory sites, with relative risks ranging from 0.6 to 1.7. The use of dry snuff

Use of smokeless tobacco in a group of professional baseball players.

This paper describes the smokeless tobacco use practices and oral health problems of members of a minor league professional baseball team. Seventeen of 25 ball-players reported current use of smokeless tobacco. Gingival recession and lesions in the oral mucosa were more common in smokeless tobacco users than nonusers. Reported use of smokeless tobacco was greater during baseball season than in the off-season. Of the 19 current and past users, 15 reported first using smokeless tobacco after entering professional baseball. To discourage the use of smokeless tobacco by professional athletes, team

Comparative Evaluation of the Impact of Subacute Exposure of Smokeless Tobacco and Tobacco Smoke on Rat Testis.

This study investigated the effects of 30-day exposure to tobacco smoke (TS), smokeless tobacco (ST), and nicotine on reproductive parameters and oxidative biomarkers in prepubertal and adult male rats. Sperm motility was reduced by 77.5 and 89.0% in TS and ST exposed prepubertal rats and 71.1 and 86.4% in adult rats, respectively. Sperm count was also reduced by 64.7 and 89.9% in prepubertal rats and 64.9 and 47.0% in adult rats, respectively. Nicotine decreased sperm motility (82.2%) and count (62.6%) in prepubertal rats but caused no effect in adult rats. There were no changes in sperm morp

Gamma Glutamyl Transpeptidase, Smokeless Tobacco, Chronic Periodontitis: Exploring the Link.

INTRODUCTION: Oxidative Stress (OS) is implicated in the pathogenesis of many systemic and oral diseases such as periodontal disease. Smokeless tobacco extract produces apoptosis and causes an imbalance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants, such as Gamma Glutamyl Transpeptidase (GGT). Epidemiological research implied serum GGT within its normal range to be an early sensitive enzyme related to OS. AIM: To assess how GGT fares as a biomarker in periodontitis subjects with or without the usage of smokeless tobacco and correlate it with clinical parameters. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nin

Greater Sensitivity of Oral Fibroblasts to Smoked Versus Smokeless Tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Smokers have an increased incidence and severity of periodontal disease. Although cigarette smoke contains >4,000 chemical components that could affect periodontal tissues, less is understood about the effect of smokeless tobacco. Therefore, this study compares the effects of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) and smokeless tobacco extract (STE) on cell survival and motility of periodontal ligament (PDL) and gingival fibroblasts in vitro. METHODS: PDL and gingival fibroblasts were exposed to various concentrations of CSE, STE, or nicotine alone. Viable cells were labeled with calcein a
