Tobacco use and cessation in psychiatric disorders: National Institute of Mental Health report.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) convened a meeting in September 2005 to review tobacco use and dependence and smoking cessation among those with mental disorders, especially individuals with anxiety disorders, depression, or schizophrenia. Smoking rates are exceptionally high among these individuals and contribute to the high rates of medical morbidity and mortality in these individuals. Numerous biological, psychological, and social factors may explain these high smoking rates, including the lack of smoking cessation treatment in mental health settings. Historically, "self-medi

Tobacco use cessation curricula in the U.S. dental schools and dental hygiene programs.

Tobacco-related health problems are the most preventable forms of illness in the United States. By assuming proactive tobacco use cessation counseling roles, dentists and dental hygienists can help reduce the number of people who currently use tobacco. The literature reports that many oral health professionals feel unprepared to assume such roles. To help combat the problem of tobacco-related illness and to help prepare dentists and dental hygienists to assume tobacco use cessation counseling roles, dental schools and dental hygiene programs need to develop appropriate didactic and clinical to

Mapping tobacco use cessation counselling awareness in dental offices: a cross-country survey.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco is a global public health issue. Brief interventions can motivate tobacco use cessation. However, Tobacco Use Cessation Counselling (TUCC) is underutilized in dental settings despite being ideal for such interventions. This survey aimed to assess the awareness, associated factors towards TUCC among dental care professionals in Sri Lanka, Brazil, and Queensland (QLD), Australia. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional online survey used a self-administered questionnaire via Qualtrics, conducted from February to August 2023 among dental care professionals. Eligibility crit

Prior Authorization Requirements and Medicaid Enrollees' Use of Tobacco Cessation Medications, Colorado, 2023.

Despite tobacco cessation medications being a first-line treatment for quitting smoking, a majority of Medicaid programs require health care providers to obtain prior authorization before prescribing them. We examined the impact of Colorado's Medicaid program removing its prior authorization requirement for these drugs on their use and estimated the additional number of Coloradoans who used these therapies in 2023 because of the policy change. The findings indicate that these requirements decrease low-income people's use of these medications. (Am J Public Health. 2025;115(1):42-46. https://doi

A Qualitative Examination of Tobacco Use and Smoking Cessation Among Gender Minority Adults.

BACKGROUND: Despite the elevated prevalence of smoking among gender minority adults, little is known about the factors that influence their tobacco use and cessation. PURPOSE: We identified and examined factors that influence tobacco use and cessation for gender minority adults, using a conceptual framework based on the Model of Gender Affirmation and Gender Minority Stress Model. METHODS: Nineteen qualitative, semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with gender minority adults who smoke or no longer smoke and were recruited from the Portland, OR metropolitan area. Interviews were

Perceived risks, reasons for use, and barriers to cessation among youth who use multiple tobacco products.

BACKGROUND: Many interventions aim to reduce youth tobacco use, but few have focused on youth who use multiple tobacco products (MTPs). This qualitative study sought to understand how youth who use MTPs view tobacco product risks, describe reasons for MTP use, and perceive barriers and facilitators to cessation. METHODS: We conducted seven virtual focus groups with 30 US youth ages 14-20 years who reported using e-cigarettes and smoking a combustible tobacco product in the past 30 days. We used a semi-structured focus group guide to ask youth about perceived health risks of tobacco products,

The Role of Mental Health and Substance Use in Homeless Adults' Tobacco Use and Cessation Attempts.

Objective: Although tobacco use is prevalent among adults experiencing homelessness, research deficits exist regarding the mental health, substance use, and demographic correlates of tobacco use behaviors in this population. This study examined whether correlates of tobacco use among housed adults identified by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) were significant correlates of tobacco use and cessation attempts among a sample of homeless adults. Methods: Participants (N = 421) were adults experiencing homelessness entering permanent supportive housing programs in Los Angeles. Multivariate log

Interventions for tobacco use cessation in people in treatment for or recovery from substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Smoking rates in people with alcohol and other drug dependencies are two to four times those of the general population. Concurrent treatment of tobacco dependence has been limited due to concern that these interventions are not successful in this population or that recovery from other addictions could be compromised if tobacco cessation was combined with other drug dependency treatment. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether interventions for tobacco cessation are associated with tobacco abstinence for people in concurrent treatment for or in recovery from alcohol and other drug dependen

Strategic use of tobacco treatment specialists as an innovation for tobacco cessation health systems change within health care organizations.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco screening interventions have demonstrated effectiveness at improving population health, yet many people who want to quit using tobacco lack access to professional assistance. One way to address this gap is to train members of the clinical team as tobacco treatment specialists (TTSs). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand how TTSs have been used across a variety of health care organizations implementing health systems change for tobacco treatment and examine the sustainability of TTSs as a health systems change innovation for tobacco cessation. Improving Tobacco Cessation Rates Using Inline Clinical Decision Support.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Even brief advice from a clinician can significantly influence cessation rates among tobacco users, but clinicians often miss opportunities to provide this simple intervention. OBJECTIVES: The intent of this quality improvement project was to increase tobacco cessation among tobacco users by nudging clinicians using a clinical decision support (CDS) tool. METHODS: We developed a CDS tool using principles of user-centered design and the CDS Five Rights to dynamically insert actionable information a

Tobacco cessation treatment education for dental students using standardized patients.

The use of standardized patients (SPs) shows promise in tobacco cessation treatment (TCT) training by providing a simulated clinical environment for dental students to practice counseling skills with individuals trained to portray patients. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in attitudes, perceptions, and knowledge between dental students who received a lecture and practice sessions with SPs and those who received a lecture only. Dental students in an introductory clinical course at one dental school were invited to participate in the study by completing a pre

Predictors of Cessation in Men Using a Tobacco Quitline: A Follow-Up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although the effectiveness of tobacco quitline services for people who smoke cigarettes is well established, less is known about other forms of tobacco. This study aimed to compare quit rates and factors contributing to tobacco abstinence in men reporting dual use (smokeless tobacco and one additional combustible tobacco product), smokeless tobacco use only, and cigarette use only. METHODS: Self-reported 30-day point-prevalence tobacco abstinence at the 7-month follow-up was calculated in males who registered with the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline and completed a 7-month follow-up s

Addressing tobacco use in the context of opioid use disorder: A systematic review of smoking cessation interventions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Rates of tobacco use disorder (TUD) are high among individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD), who consistently show lower response rates to evidence-based treatment approaches for TUD relative to the general population. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive and updated examination of the current evidence regarding TUD treatments for individuals with OUD. We first summarize potential mechanisms driving TUD and treatment nonresponse among those with OUD, given the likely roles of overlapping reward and withdrawal processes in co-occurrence and treatme

Assessing the Availability of Pharmacotherapy Options for Tobacco Cessation in Tennessee's Substance Use Facilities.

OBJECTIVES: Smoking is deadly and exacerbates comorbid health conditions, especially among those with co-occurring substance use disorders. Tennessee does not require substance abuse treatment facilities to concurrently provide tobacco-cessation treatment options or limit smoking on facility property as a standard for licensure. This study examines the relation between Tennessee facility region and availability of pharmacotherapeutic options for tobacco cessation, and the relation between the facilities' region and facility smoking policy. METHODS: This study is descriptive, cross-sectional,

Rates and correlates of tobacco cessation service use nationally in the Veterans Health Administration.

Tobacco use is a substantial problem for veterans using Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services, but relatively little is known about the association of specific patient characteristics, patterns of service use, the amount of such services, and the frequency of their use. Analysis of national VHA administrative data (N = 5,531,379) from fiscal year 2012 (FY2012) were used to identify use of tobacco cessation counseling services among veterans with a diagnosed tobacco use disorder, and to examine correlates of such use. Only 3.8% of veterans diagnosed with a tobacco use disorder used VHA

Alternative tobacco product use and smoking cessation among homeless youth in los angeles county.

INTRODUCTION: Approximately 70% of homeless youth smoke cigarettes, but their use of alternative tobacco products (ATPs) is unknown. This paper reports on ATP use among past-month smokers in Los Angeles County, including whether it differs by demographic characteristics, homelessness severity, past-year quit attempts, and readiness to quit smoking. Given the growing popularity of e-cigarettes, we also report on perceptions of harm and reasons for using this product. METHODS: We surveyed 292 unaccompanied homeless youth who were randomly sampled from street sites. Participants had smoked at le

The impact of cannabis co-use and cannabis use disorder on interest in and barriers to tobacco cessation.

BACKGROUND: Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is increasing, but its impact on smoking cessation is not completely understood. It is unclear whether any cannabis use, or only problematic use such as cannabis use disorder (CUD), impacts smoking cessation. METHOD: In 2023, we conducted an online, national survey of US adults (n = 2,271) currently smoking cigarettes. We examined the association of past 30-day cannabis use (divided into three groups: co-use with CUD, co-use without CUD, and no cannabis use) with outcomes that can impact smoking cessation: self-rated importance, readiness, and confid

Determining the impact of cannabis use and severity on tobacco cessation outcomes: study protocol for a prospective tobacco treatment trial.

BACKGROUND: Several evidence-based tobacco cessation treatment strategies exist, though significant barriers to cessation remain which must be addressed to improve abstinence rates for sub-populations of those smoking cigarettes. Cannabis co-use among those who use tobacco is common and appears to be increasing among adults in the United States (US). The literature evaluating the impact of cannabis use on tobacco cessation has been mixed and has several important limitations, which precludes development of treatment recommendations specific to individuals who use tobacco and co-use cannabis. Features of Mobile Health Apps for Tobacco Cessation That Appeal to Black Adults Who Use Tobacco Products: Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Mobile health (mHealth) interventions show promise in supporting tobacco cessation. However, Black adults who use tobacco products are not well represented in mHealth studies for tobacco cessation, and their preferred features of mHealth apps are not well known. Identifying types of mHealth app features for tobacco cessation preferred by Black adults is critical to developing a culturally adapted app, with increased uptake by the target population.
