BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is a common immune-mediated skin disease that can involve other organs and tissues, including the oral mucosa. Some studies have found an increased proportion of geographic tongue (GT) and fissured tongue (FT) in patients with psoriasis, which appears to be region-specific.

Tongue fissures, an important feature on the tongue surface, may be pathologically related to some diseases. Most existing tongue fissure extraction methods use tongue images captured by traditional charge coupled device cameras. However, these conventional methods cannot be used for an accurate analysis of the tongue surface due to limited information from the images. To solve this, a hyperspectral tongue imager is used to capture tongue images instead of a digital camera. New algorithms for automatic tongue fissure extraction and classification, based on hyperspectral images, are presented.

A quantitative, semiautomatic analysis of histologic features of the specific inflammatory changes occurring on the dorsum of human tongue was made for 37 tongues. Well-documented histologic differences between clinically normal appearing tongue (control), atrophic, geographic and fissured tongue were shown quantitatively. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the effects of multiple tongue conditions on the diversity and composition of the oral microbiota to obtain a more detailed understanding of their potential role in health and disease.
METHOD: Ninety-three subjects were classified according to tongue conditions, such as a yellow tongue coating, the presence or absence of swelling of the sublingual vein, a red tongue or red tongue tip, a fissured tongue, enlarged tongue, geographic tongue, and tooth marks. Geographic tongue and fissured tongue may be mucosal manifestations of generalized pustular psoriasis. All three disorders have polygenic inheritance patterns and affected patients may share genes. Five patients in three families with geographic tongue, fissured tongue, and generalized pustular psoriasis are described and the lingual lesions of generalized pustular psoriasis are reviewed.
