Anterior tongue cancer with no history of tobacco and alcohol use may be a distinct molecular and clinical entity.

BACKGROUND: A small, albeit significant, number of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients has no history of tobacco and alcohol use. Such non-habits associated HNSCCs may represent a distinct clinical entity and exhibit increased aggressiveness. The objective of the study was to understand differences in molecular etiology of habits, and non-habits associated tongue carcinomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: High-throughput gene expression profiling of 22 tumor samples was carried out. This was followed by quantitative real-time PCR validation of four of the identified differentially

Association between viral hepatitis B infection and halitosis.

OBJECTIVE: Oral malodor can be increased in breath of liver patients. However, no study has been performed for the association between volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) and viral hepatitis. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between viral hepatitis and VSCs. METHODS: This study analyzed 182 subjects and measured hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) and dimethyl sulfide [(CH3)2S] using the OralChroma(®). Hepatitis type B was evaluated. Periodontal health was assessed using the Community Periodontal Index (CPI) and bleeding on probing (BOP). Tongue coating

Riga-Fede disease in a child.

Riga-Fede disease (RFD) was initially described as a benign ulceration of the lingual frenum or tongue of infants, most commonly resulting from repetitive trauma by natal teeth. However, similar clinical manifestations can also be found in children with repetitive tongue-thrusting habits or certain neurological disorders. This report describes an unusual case of RFD in a 6-year-old Chinese boy. The lesion appeared as an ulcer on the anterior ventral surface of the child's tongue, and was caused by a repetitive tongue-thrusting habit. After eliminating the source of repetitive trauma and starti

Tongue coating: related factors.

AIM: A clear relationship between tongue coating and oral malodour has been observed in many clinical trials. Why or when this coating is formed remains an open question. The aim of this study was to analyse possible factors related to the presence of tongue coating in a population complaining from oral malodour. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients were recruited from a halitosis clinic (UZ Leuven). Medical history, dietary and oral hygiene habits were retrieved via a questionnaire. Data were recorded on organoleptic score and level of sulphur compounds in breath, anatomical features of the tongu

Tongue morphology of the red-nosed mouse (Wiedomys pyrrhorhinos Wied-Neuwied, 1821) and adaptive implications.

Morphological tongue studies are an interesting tool for assessing feeding habits and understanding evolutionary processes. In this context, this study aimed to describe the tongue morphology of the red-nosed mouse Wiedomys pyrrhorhinos, to establish a standard model for the species and infer potential morphological associations with feeding habits. Five tongues from adult females were obtained, stored in 4% paraformaldehyde and 2.5% glutaraldehyde, and analyzed both macroscopically and using light microscopy, histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy techniques. Tongue areas are catego

Prevalence and subjective knowledge of tongue lesions in an Indian population.

AIM: The current study was designed to determine prevalence of various tongue lesions and their association with age, gender, systemic illness, deleterious habits, and distribution over the surfaces of tongue. It also explored the awareness and knowledge of subjects in relation to presence of tongue lesions, etiological factor, symptoms, and treatment received if any. METHODS: The present study was conducted on 1360 randomly selected dental outpatients from 1/10/2013 to 30/09/2014. Examination of tongue included surface changes, size, movements, and the presence of mucosal lesions. The subjec

Prevalence of Tongue Thrusting in Indian Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Observational Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Oral habits such as tongue thrusting can cause deleterious effects on jaw growth and lead to malocclusion. Various studies have been done among various age-groups to check the prevalence of various oral habits. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) is to assess the prevalence of tongue-thrusting habit in Indian children below 18 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two researchers searched literature using appropriate keyword combinations in PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Observational studies on prevalence of tongue-thrusting habit in Indian

Noses, tongues, and teeth.

There is a renewed interest in the relationship between breathing patterns, tongue positions, and orthodontic management of patients with malocclusion. The authors address the effects of these factors on arch-form and occlusal contacts.

[The tongue and ventilation: a recipe for failure?].

Since publication of the studies by the functionalist school (Ricketts, Linder-Aronson, Gola...), the role of function, and ventilation in particular, appears to be taken more widely into account. The close interconnection of ventilation / growth / lingual function and malocclusion is now evident to all. However, although an ENT diagnosis of a ventilation defect and its etiology is now standard practice, treatment of the condition is not always sufficient to ensure a functional environment conducive to orthodontic stability, even when rehabilitation is prescribed. In some instances, certain hi
