BACKGROUND: The relation between Goldmann applanation tonometry and central corneal thickness (CCT) was evaluated in several studies during the last thirty years. Patients with ocular hypertension were found to have a significantly higher CCT compared with normals and glaucomas.
PATIENTS: To report on two sisters with elevated CCT and ocular hypertension diagnosed by raised intraocular-pressure (IOP) readings on Goldmann applanation tonometry.
RESULTS: In both patients, there were no signs for early functional or morphological glaucomatous changes. Maximum IOP was 30 mm Hg and 26 mm Hg. The

A new approach to transpalpebral assessment of intraocular pressure (IOP) was developed, by using a model of its graded elevation, in which natural anatomic and topographic relationships were not impaired in the fundus of the eye and by studying the biomechanical regularities of tension distribution in the ocular accessory apparatus when IOP was altered. An objective biomechanical criterion was proposed for measuring IOP. The capacities of transpalpebral acoustic tonometry were assessed in children with ocular injuries and congenital glaucoma in the clinic. There is evidence for that it is exp

BACKGROUND: The difference in the ocular pulse amplitude between an individual's eyes may reflect abnormalities of the cerebrovascular circulation and has been shown to be helpful in assessing patients with cavernous sinus arteriovenous fistulas.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: A 71-year-old woman presented with episcleral injection, proptosis, bruit and retro-orbital pain on the left side. Ocular pulse amplitude as measured by dynamic contour tonometry was 4.38 +/- 1.23 mm Hg in the right and 9.57 +/- 2.71 mm Hg in the left eye. Angiography revealed the haemodynamics of a dural left cavernous sinus arter

We present a case of paradoxically low (0 to 2 mm Hg) intraocular pressure (IOP) measured by Goldmann applanation and Tono-Pen tonometry in an eye with corticosteroid-induced high IOP after laser in situ keratomileusis. The patient complained of blurred vision and ocular pain in both eyes. The eyes were firm by palpation, and the IOP measured by Schiotz indentation tonometry was 38 mm Hg. An interface fluid pocket was identified by slitlamp examination, and the corneal surface became steeper. These findings resolved after flap relifting, interface irrigation, and addition of antiglaucoma medic

Measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) (tonometry) is conducted routinely in the eye clinic for the diagnosis and management of primary open-angle glaucoma. Mean IOP may be influenced by a number of factors including ocular accommodation, spontaneous pulsations of IOP, and the effect of repeated applanation. A review of some of the factors that influence IOP should help us gain a perspective on the reliability of diurnal tonometry in the diagnosis of primary open-angle glaucoma.

Parrots (Psittaciformes) comprise a large group of approximately 400 species of birds. There are currently no comprehensive reviews of parrot ophthalmology in the peer-reviewed literature. This review describes the unique ocular variations of parrots, including visual ability and anatomic adaptations. A comprehensive summary of ophthalmic diagnostic tests, including aqueous tear measurements, tonometry, conjunctival cytology, conjunctival microbiology, and ocular ultrasonography, in clinically normal psittacine birds is presented. Common ocular disorders of parrots and their treatments are dis

Eighty-five patients with keratoconus and 20 normal controls were studied. Ocular rigidity, calculated using the Friedenwald nomogram, correlated with corneal thinning (p less than 0.001) and area of cone (p = 0.05). Schiøtz pressures with increasing weights fell more than normal in Grades 0 to 3 keratoconus, but returned to normal following corneal grafting, as did ocular rigidity. Goldmann applanation pressures were low over the apex of the cone, varying most in eyes with lowest ocular rigidity and with greatest corneal thinning, but also in large sagging cones which had only minimal corneal

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central corneal thickness has become an important biometric factor and is an essential part of the evaluation of glaucoma. Goldmann applanation tonometry is the most widely used method of measuring intraocular pressure, but it is well known that corneal parameters affect the accuracy of this instrument. Intraocular pressure reduction is currently the only treatment available for decreasing the risk of glaucoma progression, so it is important to have an accurate reading of the true intraocular pressure.
RECENT FINDINGS: New tonometers such as the dynamic contour tonometer an
