Conservative surgical management of a supernumerary tooth in the nasal cavity.

A 9-year-old girl presented with a foreign body obstruction inside her nose. The condition led to pain and nasal congestion. CT showed the presence of a radiopaque mass similar to a tooth in the right nasal cavity. Diagnosis of a supernumerary intranasal tooth was made and extraction was performed under general anaesthesia. An ectopic tooth in the nasal cavity is rare and surgical removal is recommended to eliminate the symptoms.

Supernumerary nasal tooth in close proximity to a dental implant.

Supernumerary nasal teeth (SNT) are a rare phenomenon. Supernumerary teeth occur in 0.1 to 1% of the population. They are most commonly found in the upper incisor area, when they are known as mesiodentes. They also are fairly common elsewhere on the intraoral palate and in the maxillary sinus. Nasal teeth are quite rare, with only case reports and small case series found in the literature. SNT can present with different symptoms, including unilateral nasal obstruction, nasal drainage, and infections, or they can be asymptomatic and found incidentally. This report describes a case of a nasal to

Supernumerary tooth in the primary molar region: a case report.

Supernumerary teeth are among the most common dental anomalies affecting the primary and permanent dentition. They are usually found in the anterior maxilla and occur infrequently in the primary dentition. The purpose of this paper was to report a case diagnosed with primary supernumerary tooth in the primary second molar region. The crown and root shape of the primary supernumerary tooth resembled that of the primary first molar. On radiographic examination, the primary supernumerary tooth was followed by a permanent supernumerary successor with an unusually big crown. The primary supernumera

Lateral buccotomy for removal of a supernumerary cheek tooth in a horse.

A 3-year-old female Standardbred was admitted for evaluation of a firm swelling on the right side located rostral to the facial crest and a firm intraoral swelling located rostral to the erupted cheek teeth. Examination of skull radiographs revealed a supernumerary cheek tooth rostral to the erupted third premolar. The supernumerary tooth was removed via lateral buccotomy. The horse did not have complications after surgery and resumed racing. Lateral buccotomy should be considered for removal of rostrally located maxillary or mandibular cheek teeth. Supernumerary cheek teeth can be found in lo

Supernumerary teeth in anthropoid primates and models of tooth development.

Supernumerary teeth are usually regarded as de-novo structures that result from abnormal development by the splitting of a tooth germ. The notions of abnormal and de novo appear to be applicable in only one instance, the morphological dental twin. All other types of supernumerary deciduous teeth can be explained by either a progress zone or an interstitial budding model of tooth differentiation. The development of extra structures as well as the loss of normally-present teeth can be explained by differences in potential within the context of normal development.

Management of a maxillary central incisor impacted by a supernumerary tooth.

Supernumerary teeth in the maxillary midline are common and can present both esthetic and pathologic problems that can be extremely difficult to solve. Early detection of the mesiodens is most important if such complications are to be avoided. This case required both surgical and orthodontic treatment to bring an unerupted, impacted maxillary central incisor into position. Using a combination of conservative surgical treatment and careful orthodontic management, the tooth was brought into good position in the dental arch and injury to root structure and surrounding oral tissues was avoided.

Pindborg tumor associated with a supernumerary tooth: a case report.

The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor is a rare benign neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1% of all odontogenic tumors. Most of the cases occur in the posterior mandible, and a few involve the maxilla. Despite their relatively indolent biological behavior, tumors in the maxilla tend to grow fast. We report the case of a 33-year-old female patient exhibiting swelling in the right maxilla. An isodense area associated with an impacted supernumerary tooth was found on imaging examination. The histopathologic diagnosis was a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor. The treatment of choi

Maxillary dentigerous cyst and supernumerary tooth. Is it a frequent association?

UNLABELLED: Dentigerous cysts, also known as follicular cysts, are a relatively common pathology in our field. They are associated with unerupted or semi-erupted teeth and are usually not related to supernumerary teeth. OBJECTIVE: To describe a dentigerous cyst case associated to a supernumerary tooth. CASE-REPORT: A large-sized dentigerous cyst is described, associated with a supernumerary tooth, affecting the whole maxillary anterior area. Appropriate treatment consists of performing root canals and a Partsch II procedure with a cystectomy, extracting the unerupted teeth, carrying out an a

Tooth size patterns in patients with hypodontia and supernumerary teeth.

AIMS: Anomalies of tooth number may not be isolated conditions but may have wider associations in the development of the dentition including tooth size. This study aimed to examine links between hypodontia, supernumerary teeth and crown size, considering the effect on the development of the whole dentition and so increase understanding of the aetiology of these conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS: The patients, who were all of European ancestry, were 60 young adults (30 males and 30 females) with hypodontia and 60 age and sex matched controls together with 60 young adults (39 males and 21 females

Genetic Variants in KIF7 May Contribute to Supernumerary Tooth Formation.

OBJECTIVE: Kinesin Family Member 7 (KIF7) regulates ciliary integrity. Cilia-mediated sonic hedgehog signalling regulates tooth number, position, and morphology. The objective of the study was to investigate whether KIF7 variants could contribute to the formation of supernumerary teeth. METHODS: Whole-exome sequencing was performed on 153 individuals from 130 families with isolated supernumerary tooth types. Immunohistochemistry of Kif7 expression during early odontogenesis was performed in mouse embryos. Mutant KIF7 protein models were generated. RESULTS: We identified 4 rare missense varia

Dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary tooth.

Most typical dentigerous cysts are commonly seen in association with third molars and maxillary canines. Only 5-6% of dentigerous cysts are associated with supernumerary teeth. We report a rare case of dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted anterior maxillary supernumerary tooth. The patient was treated surgically by enucleation of the cyst.

Correlation between genotype and supernumerary tooth formation in cleidocranial dysplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD, MIM#119600), for which the responsible gene is RUNX2, is a genetic disorder characterized by hypoplasia or aplasia of the clavicles, patent fontanelles, and a short stature. Supernumerary teeth and delayed eruption and impaction of permanent teeth are frequently associated with CCD. Our previous study reported wide intrafamilial variation in supernumerary tooth formation associated with a mutation in the RUNT-domain of RUNX2, suggesting a low correlation between the genotype and supernumerary tooth formation. To further clarify this point, a more pre

Supernumerary teeth removal and orthodontic tooth repositioning: a case report.

A case is presented of a 12-year-old, black male, who had a full permanent dentition except for retaining the two maxillary primary central incisors. A radiographic examination revealed the presence of two supernumerary teeth interfering with the eruption of the permanent central incisors. Space was orthodontically created for the permanent central incisors, the primary central incisors and supernumerary teeth were removed, and the permanent central incisors were orthodontically brought into proper alignment.

Third Dentition Is the Main Cause of Premolar Supernumerary Tooth Formation.

While the prevalence of supernumerary teeth (ST) is high in permanent dentition, the etiology of ST in humans remains unclear. However, multiple murine models of ST have elaborated on dated mechanisms traditionally ascribed to ST etiology: one involves the rescue of rudimental teeth, and the second considers the contribution of odontogenic epithelial stem cells. It remains unclear whether these mechanisms of ST formation in mice are applicable to humans. The third dentition is usually regressed apoptotic-that is, the teeth do not completely form in humans. Recently, it was suggested that ST re
