Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor mimicking a lateral periodontal cyst - A rare case report in the mandible.

Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is benign tumor of the oral cavity characterized by its slow growth accounting to 3%-7% of the odontogenic tumors. AOTs mostly occur in the maxillary anterior region and most often than not associated with impacted anterior teeth. It affects the younger age group, especially below 20 years and is commonly seen in females. It occurs as two main variants - (a) central/intraosseous which is more common and (b) peripheral which is rare. The location of the lesion, its association with the impacted tooth, is the basis for the classification of AOT. The intraosseo

An impacted malformed primary maxillary central incisor diagnosed as a compound odontoma.

An odontoma is usually found in the surrounding area of the unerupted permanent tooth bud and rarely adjacent to the primary central incisor This report presents a case of an unerupted malformed primary central incisor, histologically diagnosed as a compound odontoma. A 5.5 year-old healthy boy presented with an unerupted maxillary left primary central incisor and mild gingival buccal swelling. No history of traumatic injury was recorded. Radiological examination revealed a tooth-like mass with a partially developed root and a malformed crown in the area of the left primary central incisor Del

Orthodontic treatment for an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary central incisor. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have indicated the treatment for permanent teeth with disturbed eruption due to the presence of supernumerary teeth. However, successful treatment for an unerupted maxillary incisor with severe rotation and another maxillary incisor with disturbed eruption by a supernumerary tooth is quite rare. CASE REPORT: We treated a 7-year-old Japanese male with an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary right incisor, along with a maxillary left incisor due to interference with eruption by an inverted supernumerary tooth. Orthodontic treatment using surgical exposure, traction

Endoscopic removal of ectopic dentition in ethmoid sinus.

A 66-year-old woman presented with a 6-month history of unilateral right nasal obstruction and rhinorrhoea not responding to medical therapy. She had a history of dental implantation for an unerupted tooth on the right side 3 years ago. Physical examination including flexible nasendoscopy demonstrated yellow debris in the right middle meatus. CT paranasal sinuses demonstrated a radiopaque lesion in the right anterior ethmoid sinus and resembled the unerupted tooth. The tooth was removed endoscopically from the right nasal cavity without complications. This case highlights the importance of eli

The follicular primordial cyst - odontogenic keratocyst.

Primordial cysts are often associated with unerupted teeth. Superimposition may result in a 'dentigerous cyst' appearance radiographically. There is usually no direct connection between the cyst lining and the follicle of the unerupted tooth. These have been termed envelopmental primordial cysts. In some instances, however, the primordial cyst actually surrounds the crown and the cyst lining is attached to the neck of the tooth in a true dentigerous relationship. We have called these lesions follicular primordial cysts. That portion of the lining immediately adjacent to the neck of the tooth c

Genotype-phenotype analysis of selective failure of tooth eruption-A systematic review.

Tooth eruption is an important and unique biological process during craniofacial development. Both the genetic and environmental factors can interfere with this process. Here we aimed to find the failure pattern of tooth eruption among five genetic diseases. Both systematic review and meta-analysis were used to identify the genotype-phenotype associations of unerupted teeth. The meta-analysis was based on the characteristics of abnormal tooth eruption in 223 patients with the mutations in PTH1R, RUNX2, COL1A1/2, CLCN7, and FAM20A respectively. We found all the patients presented selective fail

Identical unerupted maxillary incisors in monozygotic twins.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth found in the premaxilla. It might be discovered by the orthodontist by chance on a radiograph or as the cause of an unerupted maxillary central incisor. The genetic transmission of supernumerary and impacted teeth is poorly understood. The occurrence of identical unerupted maxillary central incisors and mesiodentes in monozygotic twins suggests that genetic factors might influence the etiology of this problem. In this case report, we discuss the treatment of unerupted maxillary permanent incisors caused by mesiodentes in monozygotic twin

A palatal dentigerous cyst arising from a mesiodente.

Dentigerous cysts can develop from unerupted primary, permanent, or rarely supernumerary teeth. When a supernumerary tooth is in the maxilla, near the midline, it is called a mesiodente. Such a mesiodente lies in the palate and a cyst developing about this tooth can extend directly up into the nasal fossae. More commonly a dentigerous cyst arising from unerupted maxillary teeth occurs about the molar, premolar, or canine teeth and the cyst extends up into the maxillary sinus. The CT and MR findings in a rare case of a dentigerous cyst of a mesiodente are presented.

Mandibular fracture complications associated with the third molar lying in the fracture line.

A retrospective study of 622 patients (551 men and 71 women, age range 14-63 years) with 650 mandibular fractures crossing the third molar was conducted. In 183 patients (193 fracture lines) the wisdom tooth was retained or partially erupted and in 439 patients (457 fractures) the wisdom tooth in the fracture line was normally situated in the dentition. The analysis showed no statistically significant difference in the complication frequency associated with the extraction of retained or erupted wisdom teeth (12.50% and 8.37%, respectively). In treatment of fractures with retention of the wisdo

A rare case of unerupted second deciduous molar located inferior to the second premolar: case report.

AIM: Tooth eruption is defined as the movement of a tooth from its site of development within the alveolar process to its functional position in the oral cavity [Massler et al., 1941]. The process of tooth eruption can be divided into different phases: pre-eruptive bone stage, alveolar bone stage, mucosal stage, preocclusal stage, occlusal stage and maturation stage [Andreasen et al., 1997]. Any disturbance in these phases can lead to eruptive anomalies. The incidence of unerupted teeth is usually higher among permanent teeth than among deciduous ones [Walker et al., 2004; Otsuka et al., 2001;

Incidental findings on dental radiographs: dentigerous cyst.

Dentigerous cysts are the second-most-common cysts occurring in the jaws. A dentigerous cyst is formed as a result of fluid accumulation in the reduced enamel epithelium surrounding an unerupted tooth. These cysts typically present as well-defined pericoronal radiolucencies either superior or lateral to the unerupted tooth. Dentigerous cysts involving the posterior maxillary teeth tend to grow into and fill the maxillary sinus and, hence, are discovered late. Posterior mandibular dentigerous cysts commonly extend well into the ramus. There are often no clinical symptoms, with the exception of

Transmigration of impacted lower canine. Case report and review of literature.

Retention, that is, a permanent tooth which is unerupted more than a year after the normal age of eruption, is a relatively rare event, except in the case of the third molars and the upper canines. Transmigration is defined as the phenomenon of more than half an unerupted impacted tooth crossing the midline. We report the clinical case of a twenty-year-old patient presenting transmigration of the lower left canine, with a type 4 transmigration pattern (Mupparapu). Likewise, we carried out a review of the literature of the cases that have been published on transmigration, updating the main aspe

Study protocol for the management of impacted maxillary central incisors: a multicentre randomised clinical trial: the iMAC Trial.

BACKGROUND: Failure of eruption of the maxillary permanent incisor teeth usually presents in the mixed dentition between the ages of 7 and 9 years. Missing and unerupted maxillary incisors can be regarded as unattractive and have a potentially negative impact on facial and dental aesthetics. The presence of a supernumerary tooth (or odontoma) is commonly responsible for failed eruption or impaction of the permanent maxillary incisors. The primary objective of this trial is to investigate the success of eruption associated with maxillary incisor teeth that have failed to erupt because of a supe

The surgical uncovering and orthodontic positioning of unerupted maxillary canines.

1. The presence of the maxillary canine is vital to the function and esthetics of the dental complex. The availability of this tooth must be carefully considered during an orthodontic diagnosis. Lack of space is the most common cause of canine impaction. Other contributing factors are that this tooth has the longest period of developmenent and that it is bigger longer, and travels farther while erupting than any other tooth. 2. Proper management of unerupted canines is a challenge to the dental practitioner. Maxillary canines are found impacted to both the buccal and the lingual. Palatal impac

Retrospective evaluation of cone-beam computed tomography findings of odontogenic cysts in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Odontogenic cysts develop from the epithelium of dental structures and generally grow slowly. In children and adolescents, cysts usually grow faster than adults and require much knowledge for diagnoses and treatments. AIMS: This study aimed to determine the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic cysts in different age groups by evaluating the type of lesions, age, gender, and anatomical distribution of odontogenic cysts seen in children and adolescents by cone-beam computed tomography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 odontogenic cysts (radicular, dentigerous cyst, and odonto

Multiple impacted teeth: report of 3 cases.

While impaction of tooth is widespread, multiple impacted teeth by itself is a rare condition and often found in association with syndromes such as cleidocranial dysplasia or Gardner's syndrome. A light of radiographic examination, we describe three Turkish young males with multiple impacted teeth who didn't possess any systemic conditions or syndromes involving both jaws. The first patient, a 21-year-old young male, had 16 unerupted teeth and 5 unerupted supernumerary teeth. The second patient with totally edentulous mandible, a 20-year-old young male, had 31 unerupted teeth. The third patien

Diagnosis and treatment planning for unerupted premolars.

Premolars rank third in frequency after third molars and maxillary canines in impacted or unerupted teeth. Failure to detect and analyze the problem may lead to unnecessary space loss, crowding, or collapse of the dental arch. A diagnostic scheme is presented to facilitate diagnosing and treating unerupted premolars. Important observations include: Diagnosing congenitally missing permanent teeth. Whether the condition is generalized or localized. Whether the succedaneous tooth has a viable form, eruptive potential, and viable orientation Whether the delayed eruption is due to over-retained pri
