Demineralized dentin and enamel matrices as suitable substrates for bone regeneration.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, tooth derivatives such as dentin (D) and enamel (E) have been considered as potential graft biomaterials to treat bone defects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of demineralization on the physical-chemical and biological behavior of D and E. METHODS: Human D and E were minced into particles (Ø<1 mm), demineralized and sterilized. Thorough physical-chemical and biochemical characterizations of native and demineralized materials were performed by SEM and EDS analysis and ELISA kits to determine mineral, collagen type I and BMP-2 contents. In addition, M

Effects of phosphoprotein moieties on the remineralization of human root caries.

The noncollagenous proteins, especially phosphoprotein, have been shown to modulate biomineralization. The objective of this study was to investigate the remineralization potential of human tooth root organic matrices which did or did not contain soluble non-collagenous proteins including phosphoprotein. Human tooth roots were completely demineralized using conditions that either removed or did not remove soluble phosphoprotein and were then subjected to remineralization conditions. Removal of soluble phosphoprotein resulted in remineralization while no remineralization occurred in tooth roots

Integrated Multiplex Sensing Clear Aligner for In Situ Monitoring of Dental Enamel Demineralization.

Clear aligners have become one of the most important tools in orthodontic treatment. However, over a lengthy period of orthodontic treatment, enamel demineralization or even dental caries could be susceptible for occurrence. Therefore, early diagnosis of enamel demineralization has been widely investigated. Nevertheless, for reasons including bulky monitoring equipment and complexity of operation, few techniques reported to date possessed clinical utility. The combination of flexible electronics and electrochemical sensing technology presented a promising strategy. Herein, an integrated multip

Higher Fluorosis Severity Makes Enamel Less Resistant to Demineralization.

Fluorotic teeth could either be more resistant or more susceptible to the caries process than sound ones due to their higher enamel fluoride concentration and higher porosity (subsurface hypomineralization), respectively; however, there is no consensus on this subject. In this study, a total of 49 human unerupted third molars presenting Thylstrup and Fejerskov (TF) fluorosis scores 0-4 were used. Two enamel slabs were obtained from each tooth. The rest of the tooth crown was powdered, and the enamel was separated from the dentine. In purified powdered enamel, the calcium (Ca), inorganic phosph

Dental enamel formation and its impact on clinical dentistry.

The nature of tooth enamel is of inherent interest to dental professionals. The current-day clinical practice of dentistry involves the prevention of enamel demineralization, the promotion of enamel remineralization, the restoration of cavitated enamel where demineralization has become irreversible, the vital bleaching of dental enamel that has become discolored, and the diagnosis and treatment of developmental enamel malformations, which can be caused by environmental or genetic factors. On a daily basis, dental health providers make diagnostic and treatment decisions that are influenced by t

Incipient caries lesions on cementum by mono- and co-culture oral bacteria.

OBJECTIVES: There is increasing prevalence of root caries. We hypothesized different biofilms will cause varying demineralization in cementum. This study investigated the extent of demineralization of cementum by oral biofilm formed from three major cariogenic microorganisms: Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Actinomyces israelii. Sound cementum tooth blocks were incubated with mono-, bi-, and tri-species combinations of the bacteria under investigation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The matrix (amide I) and phosphate content of the lesions was analyzed by Fourier-transform infrar

4D microstructural changes in dentinal tubules during acid demineralisation.

OBJECTIVE: Dental erosion is a common oral condition caused by chronic exposure to acids from intrinsic/extrinsic sources. Repeated acid exposure can lead to the irreversible loss of dental hard tissues (enamel, dentine, cementum). Dentine can become exposed to acid following severe enamel erosion, crown fracture, or gingival recession. Causing hypersensitivity, poor aesthetics, and potential pulp involvement. Improving treatments that can restore the structural integrity and aesthetics are therefore highly desirable. Such developments require a good understanding of how acid demineralisation

A multifunctional polymeric coating with self-adsorbed, antifouling and in situ remineralization properties for caries management.

Dental caries is a biofilm-induced bacterial infectious oral disease, where the early attachment of proteins and pathogenic bacteria to tooth surfaces has been known as the main cause of biofilm formation. Typically, dental caries is commonly accompanied by mineral depletion of enamels, thus causing dental demineralization. Multifunctional materials are highly attractive candidates for treating dental caries. Herein, we successfully synthesized diblock copolymers poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(aspartic acid) (PEG-PAsp) and modified them with alendronate sodium (ALN) to serve as bioactive bifunct

Ion uptake into demineralized dentine from glass ionomer cement following pretreatment with silver fluoride and potassium iodide.

BACKGROUND: Diamine silver fluoride (Ag(NH3)2F), referred to as AgF, has been shown to provide a pronounced antimicrobial action against caries. The clinical application of this material has been limited by the staining associated with both teeth and tooth coloured restorative materials. The application of potassium iodide (KI) after AgF eliminates stain formation. The purpose of this study was to determine if a prior application of silver fluoride and potassium iodine to demineralized dentine affected the uptake of strontium and fluoride from a glass ionomer cement restoration. METHOD: Three
