Lithium chloride reduces orthodontically induced root resorption and affects tooth root movement in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of lithium chloride (LiCl) on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR), and bone morphometry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten-week-old female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 32) were divided into four groups based on the concentration of LiCl administered daily per kilogram body weight: 0 (control group), 0.32, 0.64, and 1.28 mM/kg body weight. The maxillary left first molars were moved mesially by a 10 cN coil spring for 14 days. Micro-computed tomography, scanning electron microscope, and scanning laser microscope images we

Effects of CO2 laser irradiation on tooth-root cementum.

With the aging of the American population and the endemic problem of gingival recession, patients will inevitably suffer from greater exposure of root surfaces and therefore will be more likely to develop root caries. The treatment of root caries is often frustrating. Traditional biomaterials used for the restoration of enamel caries have been less than satisfactory when margins of a cavity are adjacent to cementum. Although topical fluoride gels, toothpastes, and rinses have been used to prevent or to inhibit the development of root caries, there is a problem of access to the proximal surface

[Clinical evaluation of hydroxyapatite-coated titanium artificial tooth root].

The present study was aimed at evaluating the clinical usefulness of a new type of dental implant, one piece-type artificial root made of a titanic core coated with HAp by plasma-spray coating. A total of 227 artificial roots were implanted in 78 healthy subjects (44 females, 34 males) ranging in age from 17 to 74 years. Each of them was examined on several given occasions by both radiography and a method used in periodontal disease screening. Prognostic observation lasted up to 4 years and 3 months. No implants were rejected in 77 subjects, although marked mobility of the implants resulted in

Differentiating spontaneous vertical root fracture in endodontically treated tooth.

Although vertical root fracture (VRF) is mostly found in endodontically treated teeth, it also occurs spontaneously. If VRF is recognized after endodontic treatment, it is considered to be iatrogenic and can lead to legal trouble. However, legal problems can be averted if the dentist can prove that the VRF existed before endodontic treatment. This case report describes an unusual, spontaneous VRF in an endodontically treated tooth and presents a useful tip for determining whether a fracture is iatrogenic. We performed nonsurgical endodontic treatment on a mandibular first molar with irreversib

Sonic hedgehog signaling is important in tooth root development.

Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) is important for tooth root formation, but the molecular basis for the signaling of root development remains uncertain. We hypothesized that Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling is involved in the HERS function, because it mediates epithelial-mesenchymal interactions during embryonic odontogenesis. We examined the gene expression patterns of Shh signaling in murine developing molar roots. Shh and Patched2 transcripts were identified in the HERS, whereas Patched1, Smoothened, and Gli1 were expressed in the proliferative dental mesenchyme in addition to the HERS

Concrescence of teeth: cemental union between the crown of an impacted tooth and the roots of an erupted tooth.

Concrescence of teeth is a condition showing a union of adjacent teeth by only cementum. In all the previously reported cases, the union has been observed between the roots of the affected teeth. Here, we describe the first case that showed a concrescence of the crown of an impacted tooth and the roots of the erupted tooth. In addition, we discuss how this condition, especially the deposition of acellular cementum on the crown, occurred.

The geometric relationship between root length and root surface area determined from digital tooth models.

AIM: This study investigated the correlation between root length (RL) and root surface area (RSA) in permanent maxillary and mandibular teeth to understand the impact of external apical root resorption. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) models of human teeth, representing a Japanese male adult population, were sourced from a commercial provider and segmented into individual roots. A Python algorithm calculated root surface area (RSA) at simulated root lengths by virtually shortening the roots in 1 mm increments. The total RSA (tRSA) was determined by combining the circumferential

Horizontal root fractures in posterior teeth without dental trauma: tooth/root distribution and clinical characteristics.

AIM: To describe the clinical characteristics and radiographic findings of horizontal root fractures (HRF) in posterior teeth without a history of dental trauma. METHODOLOGY: A total 24 patients and 31 HRF cases in 28 posterior teeth were collected from 2006 to 2015. Clinical examinations and radiographic imaging were evaluated. Value of confidence intervals of the proportions was calculated for data presentation. RESULTS: The number of males (54%) was similar to females (46%). The patients were predominantly between 50 and 70 years of age (75%). Most HRF cases were found in nonendodonticall

The Role of Wnt Signaling in Postnatal Tooth Root Development.

Appropriate tooth root formation and tooth eruption are critical for achieving and maintaining good oral health and quality of life. Tooth eruption is the process through which teeth emerge from their intraosseous position to their functional position in the oral cavity. This temporospatial process occurs simultaneously with tooth root formation through a cascade of interactions between the epithelial and adjoining mesenchymal cells. Here, we will review the role of the Wnt system in postnatal tooth root development. This signaling pathway orchestrates the process of tooth root formation and t

β-catenin is required in odontoblasts for tooth root formation.

The tooth root is an important part of the tooth that works together with the surrounding periodontium to maintain the tooth in the alveolar socket. The root develops after crown morphogenesis. While the molecular and cellular mechanisms of early tooth development and crown morphogenesis have been extensively studied, little is known about the molecular mechanisms controlling tooth root formation. Here, we show that β-catenin is strongly expressed in odontoblast-lineage cells and is required for root formation. Tissue-specific inactivation of β-catenin in developing odontoblasts produced molar

Tooth root resorption induced in rats by diphenylhydantoin and parathyroidectomy.

Changes in bone, cartilage and the dentition in animals and man following the administration of anticonvulsant drugs resemble those seen in hypoparathyroidism and pseudohypoparathyroidism. Groups of 21-day-old rats were treated with diphenylhydantoin, parathyroidectomized, or made hypocalcaemic with a calcium-deficient diet. Histological examination revealed extensive resorption of cementum and dentine in the molars of the drug-treated and parathyroidectomized rats, but not in the hypocalcaemic or control groups. Localization of injected tetracycline by fluorescence showed that the resorption

Preservation of the alveolar ridge with hydroxylapatite tooth root substitutes.

A total of 49 patients, who were followed for 3 to 31 months, have had 92 hydroxylapatite root implants placed in fresh extraction sockets without soft tissue closure. Hydroxylapatite root implants maintain approximately twice as much alveolar bone as the contralateral control sites without implants. It is believed that this method is a more effective and efficient procedure to preserve alveolar bone for retention of dentures than previously described procedures.

Guided Endodontics for a Tooth with Root Fracture: A Case Report.

Background: A 19-year-old female patient reported to the Department of Conservative Dentistry, Medical University of Gdańsk, with pain in the left lateral incisor. During the attempt to perform root canal treatment on tooth 22, we encountered difficulties in locating the canal opening, which resulted in treatment failure. Radiographic examinations revealed Pulp Canal Obliteration and a root fracture with a double fracture line, resulting in two root fragments. The prognosis for this tooth was poor, with extraction being the most likely outcome. Methods: To provide effective therapy, a 3D-print

Root resorption of a partially erupted tooth: a case report.

This article reports a case of a maxillary second premolar which on presentation was partially erupted, and which resisted attempts at orthodontic extrusion. The crown of the tooth was eventually restored using an adhesive composite onlay technique. The patient subsequently complained of pain and the root of the tooth showed radiographic evidence of resorption. The root of the extracted tooth had a vital pulp but massive external resorption was evident, with repair with bone-like material.

Familial ogee roots, tooth mobility, oligodontia, and microdontia.

The term ogee is proposed to describe dome or onion-shaped incisor roots as presented in a family study. A case of ogee permanent upper incisor teeth associated with microdontia, oligodontia, and tooth mobility is described. Forty-seven members of the proband's family were examined. The dental abnormalities were found to be of an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance.
