OBJECTIVES: Daily toothbrushing behaviour is very effective for the prevention of early childhood dental caries (ECC), but is mostly dependent upon parental management. Intrapersonal association between lower toothbrushing frequency and depression is well known; however, the impact of maternal postpartum depression on child toothbrushing behaviour within the mother-child dyad remains unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the association between the prevalence of maternal postpartum depression and lower toothbrushing frequency in children aged two years.
METHODS: A secondary analysis

This study was made to determine whether and to what extent bacteremia occurred after toothbrushing in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. Twenty patients were selected, all with negative history of heart or hematologic disorders. These patients had not taken antibiotics or had a history of a cold in the previous 30 days. Blood samples of 20 ml were drawn before and 5 minutes after brushing. The immune status of the patients was tested by measurement of isohemagglutins and immunoglobulin levels. Blood samples were incubated in paired culture bottles containing tryp

Globally, dental caries is one of the most prevalent diseases and is more common in children living in deprived areas. Dental caries is preventable, and guidance in the United Kingdom recommends parental supervised brushing (PSB): a collection of behaviors-including twice-daily toothbrushing with fluoridated toothpaste-that should begin upon eruption of the first tooth (approximately 6 to 12 mo of age) and for which children need to be helped or supervised by an adult until at least 7 y of age. The aim of this study was to explore parents' experiences of toothbrushing with their young children

The use of excessive brushing force has been shown to be a major cause of gingival abrasion. To aid in preventing over-vigorous brushing, the Philips/Jordan electric toothbrush incorporates a Controlled Pressure system (CPS) that causes the brush head to flex back when a toothbrushing force (TBF) in excess of a pre-determined threshold is exerted against the teeth or soft tissues. Two studies (I/II) were conducted to determine whether this mechanical feedback system is sufficiently sensitive to enable users to control their brushing behavior. In Study I, the learning pattern of brushing behavi

Cervical abrasion and some factors related to oral hygiene habits and periodontal health were investigated in 250 subjects aged 21-60 yr. The subjects were considered dentally aware since they had visited their dentist on a regular basis over the past several years. A high occurrence rate of cervical abrasion was noted with 85% of subjects exhibiting at least one superficial lesion. Manifest or deep lesions, although less common, were present in 22% of subjects. Both prevalence and severity increased with age. The severity expressed as the mean number of lesions was 7.3 for the total sample. I

A study was made to determine the extent of bacteremia experienced by patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances during periods of routine oral hygiene--namely, brushing the teeth. Sixteen orthodontic patients made up the population--11 who practiced good oral hygiene and five who demonstrated poor oral hygiene. Blood was drawn aseptically from the median cubital vein of the subjects before and 15 minutes after brushing the teeth. An aliquot of each blood specimen was added to separate blood culture bottles and incubated at 37 degrees C for a period of up to 5 days. Blood

INTRODUCTION: Ingestion of a foreign body is a common problem among all age groups. Most of the foreign bodies in the pharynx are usually lodged at the level of cricopharynx. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical, and radiological examination. Most foreign-body ingestions are accidental, but there may be contributory factors such as mental disorder, alcoholism, and prison incarceration. Toothbrush ingestion is uncommon and requires prompt medical attention.
CASE REPORT: In this article, a rare case of a toothbrush foreign body is presented. The ingestion was caused by a seizure and the

PURPOSE: To determine the most effective method to kill Streptococcus mutans on contaminated toothbrushes.
METHODS: Seven toothbrushes (one for each treatment and the control) were contaminated with S. mutans. Toothbrushes were then rinsed in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and treated as follows: (1) control without treatment; (2) air dry for 4 hours; (3) Crest Pro-Health mouthwash for 20 minutes; (4) Listerine mouthwash for 20 minutes; (5) normal cleaning cycle in a dishwasher; (6) microwave on high power for 5 minutes; and (7) ultraviolet light using the DenTek Toothbrush Sanitizer for 10

Although foreign body ingestion is relatively common, toothbrush swallowing is rare. We report a case of a swallowed toothbrush which passed through the ileocecal valve and perforated the proximal transverse colon, then the liver. To our knowledge, this is the first case to be reported.

Periodontitis is a prevalent oral disease, and current clinical management remains limited to mechanical debridement of subgingival plaque and adjunctive antibiotic therapy. In this study, we introduced a piezocatalytic nanoparticle-constructed "nano-toothbrush" as a noninvasive strategy for oral biofilm removal. The dextran-mediated biofilm affinity of the nano-toothbrush induced localized oxidative stress under ultrasound irradiation, effectively disrupting biofilms and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria. This efficacy was evidenced by the removal of ex vivo biofilms from periodontitis patients.

Different oral hygiene practices are used to overcome endemic diseases such as dental caries and oral infections. In Mali (Africa), natural plant-based toothbrushes are used for eliminating bacterial biofilm. The repertoire of microorganisms associated with natural toothbrushes is unknown. The aim of our study is to study microbial flora in particular the methanogenic archaea associated with natural toothbrushes recently recognized as responsible for periodontitis and peri-implantitis. We investigated the methanogens and bacteria associated with 15 different natural plant toothbrushes collecte

Toothbrush contamination during the procedure of brushing was assessed at different time intervals of usage. A peak value of 100% contamination was found at 1 month interval. Hence, a method suggesting disinfection of the toothbrush was employed by comparing the effectiveness of various disinfecting solutions available in the market so that, the brush does not become a source of potential pathogens.

The cleaning effect of three different toothpastes and water was studied in vivo using a laser reflexion technique. Ten healthy persons formed the test group. Light reflexion measurements on the upper front teeth were performed before and after the removal of a 72-hour plaque-pellicle. The results suggest that the toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate as abrasive was less effective than a toothpaste containing aluminium silicate, calcium carbonate and dicalcium-phosphate dihydrate or silicon dioxide and dicalcium phosphate dihydrate. The abrasivity of the toothpastes was compared in vitro.

Abrasion in human teeth brushed with toothbrush and dentifrice was evaluated quantitatively by SEM. Specimens which included surface enamel and cementum were cut from unerupted wisdom teeth. Controlled brushing was carried out by a brushing machine, with dentifrice or saline, for periods of five and ten minutes. Scratches were counted using SE micrographs. No scratches were observed on the enamel surfaces, due probably to its hardness. The cementum surfaces revealed scratches, the number increasing with the duration of burshing. Brushing with saline was much less abrasive than with dentifrice.

Background/Objectives: Cognitive impairment can compromise toothbrushing and other oral self-care functions, increasing the risk of oral diseases and related complications. However, how toothbrushing ability declines across stages of cognitive impairment remains unclear. This study aimed to describe functional deficits in toothbrushing among older adults with different levels of cognitive function. Method: Sixty-five older adults (14 cognitively healthy and 51 with documented cognitive impairment) were classified into five cognitive levels based on Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination sc
