The routine use of sonography in penetrating torso injury is beneficial.

BACKGROUND: Torso sonography (focused assessment with sonography for trauma [FAST]) has been added to our protocols for the evaluation of penetrating torso injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate our recent experience and determine whether the use of FAST is beneficial. METHODS: From January 1999 to January 2000, patients with penetrating torso injury and no clinical indication for surgery were evaluated by sonography with a selective use of other investigations. FAST consisted of sonographic views of the peritoneum and/or pericardium to determine the presence or absence of fluid.

Neonatal head and torso vibration exposure during inter-hospital transfer.

Inter-hospital transport of premature infants is increasingly common, given the centralisation of neonatal intensive care. However, it is known to be associated with anomalously increased morbidity, most notably brain injury, and with increased mortality from multifactorial causes. Surprisingly, there have been relatively few previous studies investigating the levels of mechanical shock and vibration hazard present during this vehicular transport pathway. Using a custom inertial datalogger, and analysis software, we quantify vibration and linear head acceleration. Mounting multiple inertial se

Head and/or torso cooling during simulated cockpit heat stress.

Liquid-conditioned garments (LCG's) may be useful in alleviating heat stress on aircrew members. This study evaluated the effects of a liquid-cooled vest and/or cap on subjects exposed to a thermal environment which simulated the stress of low-level flight in hot weather. The chamber was set at dry bulb temperature 35 degrees C, wet bulb temperature 26 degrees C, and black globe temperature 43 degrees C. Subjects were eight men, aged 23-45 yr. Each subject was studied in four 100-min exposures: uncooled control (XX); head cooling only (HX); torso cooling only (XT); and combined head and torso

Regenerable, Closed-circuit Oxygen Rebreather With Passive Torso Heating Capability.

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory has designed and created an alternative diving scrubber in a form of a vest that is regenerable and has passive torso heating capabilities. Regenerable, highly cyclable 5A zeolite physi-sorbents were down-selected from a number of commercial-off-the-shelf options, and sorbents of interest were implemented into the vest to scrub CO2 from the diver's breathing stream. The vest was created with high-temperature resilient, nontoxic materials featuring drop-stitch patterning to preserve form and function. The Dragon Breath rebreather prototype

Breast-torso movement coordination during running in different breast support.

To reduce breast motion with a bra, we need to understand what drives the motion of the breasts, and what variables change as support increases. Quantifying breast-torso coordination and movement complexity across the gait cycle may offer deeper insights than previously reported discrete time lag. We aimed to compare breast-torso coordination and mutual influence across breast support conditions during running. Twelve female participants ran on a treadmill at 10 km h-1 with an encapsulation and compression sports bra, and in no bra. Nipple and torso position was recorded. Vector coding, grange

Biomechanical Morphing for Personalized Fitting of Scoliotic Torso Skeleton Models.

The use of patient-specific biomechanical models offers many opportunities in the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, such as the design of personalized braces. The first step in the development of these patient-specific models is to fit the geometry of the torso skeleton to the patient's anatomy. However, existing methods rely on high-quality imaging data. The exposure to radiation of these methods limits their applicability for regular monitoring of patients. We present a method to fit personalized models of the torso skeleton that takes as input biplanar low-dose radiographs. The

The effect of short-term isometric training on core/torso stiffness.

"Core" exercise is a basic part of many physical training regimens with goals ranging from rehabilitation of spine and knee injuries to improving athletic performance. Core stiffness has been proposed to perform several functions including reducing pain by minimising joint micro-movements, and enhancing strength and speed performance. This study probes the links between a training approach and immediate but temporary changes in stiffness. Passive and active stiffness was measured on 24 participants; 12 having little to no experience in core training (inexperienced), and the other 12 being athl

Endovascular management of venous thrombotic diseases of the upper torso and extremities.

Central venous thrombosis in the upper torso can be either primary, occurring as a result of longstanding extrinsic compression, or secondary, resulting from an acquired intrinsic occlusive disease or foreign body. As in lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT), anticoagulation therapy is the mainstay of therapy in upper torso and upper extremity DVT. However, in the presence of severely symptomatic acute thrombosis, pharmacologic and/or mechanical thrombolytic therapy represent the main invasive form of therapy for these conditions. After clearance of the acute thrombotic component, definit

Thoracolumbar immobilization for trauma patients with torso gunshot wounds: is it necessary?

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that patients transported by emergency medical services (EMS) following major trauma had a longer injury-to-treatment interval and a higher mortality rate than their non-EMS-transported counterparts. HYPOTHESIS: There is little actual benefit of thoracolumbar immobilization for patients with torso gunshot wounds (GSW). DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of prospectively gathered data from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Service Systems State Trauma Registry from July 1, 1995, through June 30, 1998. SETTINGS: All designated trauma centers

Routine initial computed tomography of the chest in blunt torso trauma.

Computer tomography (CT) is an effective technique in the initial evaluation of the abdomen and head following blunt trauma. To evaluate the role of CT of the thorax, a prospective study comparing routine early thoracic CT scanning with initial chest roentgenogram (CXR) was carried out on 73 patients with blunt torso trauma undergoing concomitant abdominal CT examination. Initial CXR and CT scans were interpreted independently by radiologists in a blinded fashion. CXR diagnosed more bony injuries than CT, while the CT identified pulmonary contusions and effusions more accurately. Only those co

Why is the lower torso protected in traumatic asphyxia? A new hypothesis.

Traumatic asphyxia secondary to a crush injury of the chest is characterized by craniocervical cyanosis, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and severe vascular engorgement of the head and neck. These signs are believed to be due to high venous pressures causing stasis and capillary rupture. A "fear response" that produces a strong Valsalva maneuver is thought to be necessary for their development. The lower torso seems to be protected, and previously this was thought to be due to its superior system of valves. We present here ultrasonographic evidence that the inferior vena cava is compressed or obli

The role of torso stiffness and prediction in the biomechanics of anxiety: a narrative review.

Although anxiety is a common psychological condition, its symptoms are related to a cardiopulmonary strain which can cause palpitation, dyspnea, dizziness, and syncope. Severe anxiety can be disabling and lead to cardiac events such as those seen in Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Since torso stiffness is a stress response to unpredictable situations or unexpected outcomes, studying the biomechanics behind it may provide a better understanding of the pathophysiology of anxiety on circulation, especially on venous impedance. Any degree of torso stiffness related to anxiety would limit venous return,

Obesity Protects Against Operation in Pediatric Penetrating Trauma to the Torso.

BACKGROUND: Studies in the adult population are conflicting regarding whether obesity is protective in penetrating trauma. In the pediatric population, data on obesity and penetrating trauma are limited. We sought to determine if there is a different rate of operation or of survival in pediatric and adolescent patients with obesity. METHODS: We queried the National Trauma Data Bank research data set from 2013 to 2016 for all patients aged 2-18 who sustained traumatic penetrating injuries to the thorax and abdomen. The cohort was divided into body mass index percentiles for gender and age usin

Insights into the lower torso in late Miocene hominoid Oreopithecus bambolii.

Oreopithecus bambolii (8.3-6.7 million years old) is the latest known hominoid from Europe, dating to approximately the divergence time of the Pan-hominin lineages. Despite being the most complete nonhominin hominoid in the fossil record, the O. bambolii skeleton IGF 11778 has been, for decades, at the center of intense debate regarding the species' locomotor behavior, phylogenetic position, insular paleoenvironment, and utility as a model for early hominin anatomy. Here we investigate features of the IGF 11778 pelvis and lumbar region based on torso preparations and supplemented by other O. b

Systematic Review of REBOA Access Methods for Noncompressible Torso Hemorrhage Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Noncompressible torso hemorrhage (NCTH) is a leading cause of preventable trauma-related mortality. In cases when conventional external compression is ineffective for hemorrhage control, resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has been developed as an endovascular approach for temporary proximal aortic occlusion, enabling partial or complete control of bleeding. Successful REBOA deployment depends on timely and accurate common femoral artery (CFA) access; delays or repeated failed access attempts are associated with increased mortality. This systematic r

Thermoregulatory Responses with Size-matched Simulated Torso or Limb Skin Grafts.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to test the hypothesis that a simulated burn injury on the torso will be no more or less detrimental to core temperature control than on the limbs during uncompensable exercise-heat stress. METHODS: Nine nonburned individuals (7 men, 2 women) completed the protocol. On separate occasions, burn injuries of identical surface area (0.45 ± 0.08 m2 or 24.4% ± 4.4% of total body surface area) were simulated on the torso or the arms/legs using an absorbent, vapor-impermeable material that impedes sweat evaporation in those regions. Participants performed 60 min of treadmill

Novel Microwave Torso Scanner for Thoracic Fluid Accumulation Diagnosis and Monitoring.

Thoracic fluid accumulation is one of the significant and early-stage manifestations of fatal diseases, such as lung-cancer, liver-failure and congestive heart-failure. Currently, computational-tomography (CT)-Scan is the most widely used tool for the detection of thoracic fluid. Yet, it is unable to detect small amounts of fluid, has ionizing radiation and lacks mobility. On the other hand, microwave imaging systems have emerged as an accurate and portable complementary diagnostic tool. However, there is a lack of a complete clinical platform that can fulfill the requirements of accurate and

Utility of Torso Imaging for Elderly Patients Sustaining Ground-Level Falls.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography (CT) of the torso has become increasingly common for assessment of fall patients in the emergency department. Some data suggest that older adults (≥65) may benefit from torso imaging more than younger patients. We sought to evaluate the usage and utility of CT imaging for elderly patients presenting after ground-level falls (GLFs) from 1 meter or less at our level 1 trauma center. METHODS: Patients ≥18 presenting with GLF in 2015-2019 were included. Data were obtained through chart and trauma registry review. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the
