The neural basis of tactile texture perception.

Running our fingers across a textured surface gives rise to two types of skin deformations, each transduced by different tactile nerve fibers. Coarse features produce large-scale skin deformations whose spatial configuration is reflected in the spatial pattern of activation of some tactile fibers. Scanning a finely textured surface elicits vibrations in the skin, which in turn evoked temporally patterned responses in other fibers. These two neural codes-spatial and temporal-drive a spectrum of neural response properties in somatosensory cortex: At one extreme, neurons are sensitive to spatial

Body-environment integration: Temporal processing of tactile and auditory inputs along the schizophrenia continuum.

According to the dimensional approach to psychosis, there is a continuum from low schizotypy to schizophrenia patients. The temporal aspect of sensory processing seems to be compromised across such continuum, as suggested by different studies separately investigating unisensory or multisensory domains. Most of these studies have so far focused primarily on the temporal processing of visual and auditory stimuli, either in schizotypy or schizophrenia, while leaving the tactile domain and the integration of touch with other senses mostly unexplored. Given the relevance of body-related perceptual

Improved tactile speech perception using audio-to-tactile sensory substitution with formant frequency focusing.

Haptic hearing aids, which provide speech information through tactile stimulation, could substantially improve outcomes for both cochlear implant users and for those unable to access cochlear implants. Recent advances in wide-band haptic actuator technology have made new audio-to-tactile conversion strategies viable for wearable devices. One such strategy filters the audio into eight frequency bands, which are evenly distributed across the speech frequency range. The amplitude envelopes from the eight bands modulate the amplitudes of eight low-frequency tones, which are delivered through vibra

Is It Different to Touch Oneself Than to Touch Others? A Scientific Journey with Vincent Hayward.

In this article, we wish to share a scientific journey with our colleague and dear friend Vincent Hayward. The question of the extent to which it is different to touch oneself and someone else's skin brought us to many experimental studies and scientific discoveries. We present some of them here. It started with the use of a tactile device to investigate whether the reference frames specific to the hand differs depending on its position, towards or away from oneself. We then developed a technique allowing us to record skin-to-skin touch by means of an accelerator fixed at a short distance from

Tactile adaptation transfers between distance and continuous size.

Tactile spatial perceived distance between two touches is larger on sensitive skin regions. While such distortions are substantial for the perception of distance between two distinct touches, they are significantly reduced when participants estimate the size of a single continuous object touching the skin. Here, we examine whether some of the mechanisms involved in processing the distance between two touches are shared with and influence those underlying the perception of continuous objects, leveraging adaptation aftereffects. In experiment 1, participants adapted to specific distances between

Chinese Children with Congenital and Acquired Blindness Represent Concrete Concepts in Vertical Space through Tactile Perception.

Many studies have tested perceptual symbols in conceptual processing and found that perceptual symbols contain experiences from multisensory channels. However, whether the disability of one sensory channel affects the processing of the perceptual symbols and then affects conceptual processing is still unknown. This line of research would extend the perceptual symbol theory and have implications for language rehabilitation and mental health for people with disabilities. Therefore, the present study filled in this gap and tested whether Chinese children with congenital and acquired blindness hav

Intact Organization of Tactile Space Perception in Isolated Focal Dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Systematic perceptual distortions of tactile space have been documented in healthy adults. In isolated focal dystonia impaired spatial somatosensory processing is suggested to be a central pathophysiological finding, but the structure of tactile space for different body parts has not been previously explored. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess tactile space organization with a novel behavioral paradigm of tactile distance perception in patients with isolated focal dystonia and controls. METHODS: Three groups of isolated focal dystonia patients (cervical dystoni

Objects feel stiffer in the nondominant hand when comparing between hands.

To estimate the stiffness of an object, such as when choosing a ripe fruit, we usually probe it with our hands. The mechanism of forming stiffness perception was widely explored in unimanual interactions with objects, but our understanding of forming stiffness perception in between the different hand interactions is limited. Here, we studied stiffness perception during the interaction with virtual elastic objects touched by different hands. Participants sequentially probed pairs of virtual elastic objects and reported which object felt stiffer. They either touched both objects with the same ha

Marked C-tactile afferent suppression by a plastic film does not proportionately diminish pleasantness of gentle brushing.

C-tactile (CT) afferents have been proposed to play a key role in signalling the pleasant aspects of gentle touch, and individuals with hereditary disorders affecting CT function exhibit abnormal affective touch perception. We previously demonstrated that applying a thin elastic film to the skin alters the perceived pleasantness of brush stroking. Here, we investigated how a thin elastic film modulates responses in unmyelinated CT and myelinated low-threshold mechanoreceptors. Using microneurography in human subjects, we found that the film markedly suppressed firing in CT afferents during gen

Neurophysiology of pleasant touch: From peripheral mechanisms to clinical implications of caressing.

While tactile perception has long been studied through the lens of discriminative touch, recent research has highlighted the existence of a distinct affective touch system. Pleasant touch refers to specific forms of light tactile stimulation, such as gentle stroking or caressing applied to hairy skin. This type of sensation is primarily conveyed by unmyelinated C-tactile (CT) afferents expressing a subclass of mechanoreceptors with low-threshold activation and slow-to-intermediate adaptation. Importantly, CT firing correlates strongly with subjective pleasantness ratings but not with intensity

Contact chemoreception in multi-modal sensing of prey by Octopus.

Octopuses have keen vision and are generally considered visual predators, yet octopuses predominantly forage blindly in nature, inserting their arms into crevices to search and detect hidden prey. The extent to which octopuses discriminate prey using chemo- versus mechano-tactile sensing is unknown. We developed a whole-animal behavioral assay that takes advantage of octopuses' natural searching behavior to test their ability to discriminate prey from non-prey tastes solely via contact chemoreception. This methodology eliminated vision, mechano-tactile sensing and distance chemoreception while

Using Digital Image Correlation to Quantify Skin Deformation With Von Frey Monofilaments.

Thin von Frey monofilaments are a clinical tool used worldwide to assess touch deficits. One's ability to perceive touch with low-force monofilaments (0.008 - 0.07 g) establishes an absolute threshold and thereby the extent of impairment. While individual monofilaments bend at defined forces, there are no empirical measurements of the skin surface's response. In this work, we measure skin surface deformation at light-touch perceptual limits, by adopting an imaging approach using 3D digital image correlation (DIC). Generating point cloud data from three cameras surveilling the index finger pad,

Influence of the body schema on mirror-touch synesthesia.

Individuals with mirror-touch synesthesia (MTS) report feeling touch on their own body when seeing someone else being touched. We examined how the body schema - an on-line representation of body position in space - is involved in mapping touch from a viewed body to one's own body. We showed 45 mirror-touch synesthetes videos of a hand being touched, varying the location of the viewed touch by hand (left, right), skin surface (palmar, dorsal) and finger (index, ring). Participant hand posture was either congruent or incongruent with the posture of the viewed hand. After seeing the video, partic

Somatosensory activations during the observation of touch and a case of vision-touch synaesthesia.

In this study, we describe a new form of synaesthesia in which visual perception of touch elicits conscious tactile experiences in the perceiver. We describe a female subject (C) for whom the observation of another person being touched is experienced as tactile stimulation on the equivalent part of C's own body. Apart from this clearly abnormal synesthetic experience, C is healthy and normal in every other way. In this study, we investigate whether C's 'mirrored touch' synesthetic experience is caused by overactivity in the neural system that responds to the observation of touch. A functional

Neural processing of self-touch and other-touch in anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum condition.

INTRODUCTION: The tactile sense plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of a functional bodily self. The ability to differentiate between self- and nonself-generated touch contributes to the perception of the bodies' boundaries and more generally to self-other-distinction, both of which are thought be altered in anorexia nervosa (AN) and autism spectrum condition (AS). While it has been suggested that AN and AS are characterized by overlapping symptomatology, they might differ regarding body perception and self-other-distinction. METHODS: Participants with a diagnosis of AN (n

Stationary Haptic Stimuli Do not Produce Ocular Accommodation in Most Individuals.

This study aimed to determine the extent to which haptic stimuli can influence ocular accommodation, either alone or in combination with vision. Accommodation was measured objectively in 15 young adults as they read stationary targets containing Braille letters. These cards were presented at four distances in the range 20-50 cm. In the Touch condition, the participant read by touch with their dominant hand in a dark room. Afterward, they estimated card distance with their non-dominant hand. In the Vision condition, they read by sight binocularly without touch in a lighted room. In the Touch wi

Alpha Oscillations Are Involved in Localizing Touch on Handheld Tools.

The population of kisspeptin neurons located in the rostral periventricular area of the third ventricle (RP3V) is thought to have a key role in generating the GnRH surge that triggers ovulation. Using a modified GCaMP fibre photometry procedure, we have been able to record the in vivo population activity of RP3VKISS neurons across the estrous cycle of female mice. A marked increase in GCaMP activity was detected beginning on the afternoon of proestrus that lasted in total for 13±1 hr. This was comprised of slow baseline oscillations with a period of 91±4 min associated with high-frequency rapi

Visual-tactile perception for a biomimetic robot in constrained environments.

Environmental perception is a crucial foundation for enhancing the application potential of biomimetic robots. Motivated by the complementary roles of visual and tactile sensing observed in rats, this work proposes a visual-tactile perception for a small-scale bio-inspired robotic rat. The method leverages binocular vision to estimate depth images through an attention-based network and improve perception and localization accuracy by 14.22% based on a dynamic objects removal module. Besides, the whisker sensor is applied to enhance the robot's ability to identify object contours and environment

Comparison of sensory recovery at the subfascial and suprafascial donor sites of the free radial flap.

The radial flap may be raised using a subfascial or suprafascial approach. The latter donor site is associated with fewer healing complications. We retrospectively evaluated the quality of sensory recovery within two comparable groups of 30 patients with subfascial and suprafascial donor sites. When considering the two groups, two-point discrimination was the modality most commonly reduced, with 97% of patients in both groups having reduced sensation in at least one anatomical zone. Sensation of sharp touch was most often lost; 90% in the subfascial and 83% in the suprafascial groups lost sens

Sensory function after median nerve decompression in carpal tunnel syndrome. Preoperative vs postoperative findings.

The sensory recovery was monitored for up to 1 year after decompression of the median nerve in 69 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Special attention was paid to the rate of recovery, the importance of constant or intermittent numbness or paraesthesiae preoperatively and the influence of gender. Most patients with numbness/paraesthesiae and those with abnormal two-point discrimination recovered within 10 days. Perception of touch and vibration recovered within 3 weeks in most patients but those with abnormal nerve conduction/sensory amplitude recovered slowly during follow-up. After 1 year
