Evaluation of a pilot 'peer support' training programme for volunteers in a hospital-based cancer information and support centre.

PURPOSE: Volunteers from Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) Patient Information and Support Centre (PISC) assist the Cancer Support Nurse by helping patients and families/carers find information and provide face-to-face peer support. Benefits of shared personal experiences between volunteer and patient are clearly different from professional support. Volunteers require specific skill sets and detailed preparation for this role. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Volunteers completed a 3-day training programme adapted from the Cancer Council Victoria's 'Cancer Connect Telephone Peer Support Volunte

Child training in the Child ViReal Support Program: Combining iVR-based cognitive training and CBT techniques in a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficits are common among school-aged children and affect their social, academic, and family lives, making it necessary to receive adequate support and intervention strategies. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed (a) to evaluate whether a multilevel intervention program -combining parent training, child training based on a cognitive-behavioral approach, and iVR-based cognitive training-could improve attention, executive functions, and psychosocial adjustment in children with attention deficits, and (b) to examine whether outcomes differed according to the sequence in which th

Consensus-based recommendations to support sonographer training and wellbeing during work-integrated learning.

INTRODUCTION: The demanding nature of sonography training, alongside ongoing workforce and service pressures, can affect the quality of clinical learning experiences and trainee support. Although challenges associated with sonography work-integrated learning (WIL) have been well documented, evidence regarding stakeholder priorities for improvement remains limited. This study addresses that gap by developing consensus-based recommendations informed by trainee sonographers and clinical supervisors. METHODS: A sequential mixed-methods design comprising focus groups and a three-round modified Del

UK Foundation Programme training needs a national minimum standard for advanced life support.

Since 2021, advanced life support (ALS) has no longer been a mandatory requirement of the UK Foundation Programme. Although the shift towards capability rather than certification was educationally defensible, in practice it has created marked national variation in how resuscitation preparedness is developed, evidenced and signed off. Foundation doctors now enter emergencies with unequal access to funded ALS training, simulation and supervised assessment, while supervisors are left to judge equivalence without a consistent national threshold. This matters not because patient-level harm has been

Development of a Therapist-worn Gait Training Support System: A Pilot Feasibility Study.

OBJECTIVES: Efficient gait training requires optimization of both the training intensity and training quantity; however, objective real-time feedback during gait training remains insufficient in clinical rehabilitation settings. To address this limitation, we developed a therapist-worn gait training support system based on the use of smart glasses. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of this system on gait training parameters. METHODS: This study included 12 patients with post-stroke hemiplegia. Gait training was performed for 20 min on separate

Adjunctive Parental Support Within Manualized Parent Training for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Parent training is a central focus of behavioral intervention, with emphasis on teaching parents to become change agents for their children by using behavioral management skills. However, its effectiveness is limited by a parent's ability to engage in the learning process. Parents managing external stressors, psychopathology, or poverty often do not gain the skills and thus, the treatment may minimally impacts parent and child behavior. In order to increase a parent's ability to acquire and implement new skills accurately, referred to as parent treatment integrity, the current study added a pa

Remotely delivered information, training and support for informal caregivers of people with dementia.

BACKGROUND: Many people with dementia are cared for at home by unpaid informal caregivers, usually family members. Caregivers may experience a range of physical, emotional, financial and social harms, which are often described collectively as caregiver burden. The degree of burden experienced is associated with characteristics of the caregiver, such as gender, and characteristics of the person with dementia, such as dementia stage, and the presence of behavioural problems or neuropsychiatric disturbances. It is a strong predictor of admission to residential care for people with dementia. Psych

Evaluation of a Telesimulation Program to Support Psychosocial Communication Training for Neonatology Fellows.

Parents of infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) frequently experience significant emotional distress, yet neonatology fellows receive limited training in psychosocial support. This study evaluates the use of online standardized-patient simulation to improve fellows' communication skills addressing parent concerns. Fellows (n = 13) completed two virtual interactions with standardized parents, with feedback from a neonatal mental health professional (NMHP), a former NICU parent, and a neonatologist using narrative comments and the Gap-Kalamazoo Communication Skills Assessment Scale

Breaking Barriers in Home Dialysis: Augmented Reality, Real-Time Training, and Remote Support.

Home dialysis offers significant benefits in terms of patient quality of life, autonomy, and cost-effectiveness, yet adoption remains low due to substantial educational, logistical, and structural barriers. Augmented reality (AR) and live virtual support present a promising solution to improve patient education, enhance provider training, and offer real-time remote assistance. This article explores current barriers to home dialysis adoption, the role of AR in overcoming these challenges, and the neuroscience behind effective learning. By integrating AR with evidence-based learning science, we

Pregnancy During Surgical Training: Are Residency Programs Truly Supporting Their Trainees?

OBJECTIVE: Despite recent national improvements in family leave policies, there has been little focus on program-level support for surgical trainees. Trainees who may require clinical duty adjustments during pregnancy, who experience pregnancy loss, or who struggle with balancing work obligations with the demands of a new infant may face stigma when seeking schedule accommodations. The aim of this study was to describe program and colleague support of surgical trainees for pregnancy-related and postpartum health needs. DESIGN: Survey questionnaire. Participants responded to multiple-choice qu

Enhancing job-site training of supported workers with autism: a reemphasis on simulation.

Currently recommended practice in supported work emphasizes training job skills to workers with severe disabilities while on the job. Early behavioral research indicated that skills needed in natural environments could also be trained in simulated settings. We compared job-site plus simulation training for teaching job skills to supported workers with autism to provision of training exclusively on the job. Job-site training occurred in a small publishing company during the regular work routine, and simulation training occurred in an adult education site for people with severe disabilities. Two
