The spectrum of sexual transaction: representations in young Africans' HIV-themed creative narratives.

Sexual transaction, or any exchange of financial or material goods for sex, contributes to the disproportionate HIV burden among young women aged 15-24 years in sub-Saharan Africa. We analysed representations of sexual transactions in a sample of 363 narratives about HIV written by young Africans. The narratives were written at 4 time points (1997, 2005, 2008, 2014) by authors aged 10-24 years in urban and rural areas of Senegal, Burkina Faso, South-east Nigeria, Kenya and Eswatini, formerly Swaziland. We combined three analytical approaches: descriptive statistics of quantifiable characterist

Does the impact of calorie (energy) labelling on food purchased in worksite cafeterias differ by food category? A mega-analysis of field trials.

Calorie labels may help limit energy intake as part of policy efforts to prevent obesity. However, evidence on their effectiveness is mixed. We hypothesised this variability may relate to differences in responsiveness to labelling by food category, e.g., main meals vs. discretionary items (e.g. snacks). Systematic searches identified randomised field studies of calorie labelling that reported energy purchased (kcal) from targeted food and drink categories (main meals, discretionary foods, soft drinks). A mega-analysis (pooling raw data from multiple studies) used generalised linear mixed model

Blockchain based transparent and reliable framework for wheat crop supply chain.

The wheat crop that fulfills 35% of human food demand is facing several problems due to a lack of transparency, security, reliability, and traceability in the existing agriculture supply chain. Many systems have been developed for the agriculture supply chain to overcome such issues, however, monopolistic centralized control is the biggest hurdle to realizing the use of such systems. It has eventually gained consumers' trust in branded products and rejected other products due to the lack of traceable supply chain information. This study proposes a blockchain-based framework for supply chain tr

"Money is everything. If you don't have cash, no one will come to you:" investigating the relationship between socioeconomic status and HIV risk among adolescents and young adults in Kisumu, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported a positive association between socioeconomic status (SES) and HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This contradicts widespread understandings of how health disparities are created and sustained through socioeconomic disparity. The nature of high HIV prevalence in SSA among wealthier individuals, especially those aged 15–24 who experience wealth and HIV risk differently than other age groups, is less understood. Qualitative investigation can provide contextual “how” and “why” factors into the relationship between wealth and HIV in this population

Detecting Unusual Trading Patterns on Cryptocurrency Exchanges by Means of Complexity Measures.

Artificial transaction generation remains an important source of potential market manipulation on cryptocurrency exchanges, as it may distort reported liquidity and reduce market transparency. This study proposes a diagnostic framework for detecting unusual trading patterns based on complexity and statistical structure measures derived from high-frequency trade-level data. The analysis considers log-returns, trading volume, and transaction counts, using tail distributions, autocorrelation functions, multifractal characteristics, approximate entropy, and detrended cross-correlations. The method

Uptake of facility-based HIV testing among adolescents and young adults in Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: In Nigeria, adolescents and young adults (AYA) who engage in multiple sexual partnerships, transactional sex, and needle-sharing are eligible for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and are prioritized for HIV testing. AYA with PrEP-eligible behaviors should be using facility-based HIV testing services. We examined associations between these behaviors and facility-based HIV testing among AYA aged 14-24 years. DESIGN: A longitudinal analysis of a stepped-wedge trial. METHODS: Using Innovative Tools to Expand Youth-friendly HIV Self-Testing (I-TEST) data, we fit generalized linear models

Sexual trauma and compulsive sexual behavior in young men and women: A network analysis involving two samples.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual trauma is associated with multiple negative health and social conditions, including compulsive sexual behavior. The present study examined network structures involving sexual trauma history, psychological distress (defined as depression and/or anxiety symptoms), substance use, transactional sex, and compulsive sexual behavior. Prior network analysis work in this area is limited. METHODS: We drew upon two samples of young adults (Sample 1: n = 1,884, 69.3% women; Sample 2: n = 2,337, 69.7% women) recruited from universities in the United States in 2020-2022. RESULT

"Keeping It Real": The Relational Effects of Trauma Among African American Women and Their Substance Abuse Treatment Counselors.

African American women experience disproportionately high rates of trauma. Interpersonal forms of trauma often make it much more difficult for trauma survivors to initiate and maintain positive, healthy relationships with others. This study examined the kinds of relationships women with extensive histories of trauma and substance had with their substance abuse treatment counselors and the characteristics that they believe contributed to connected and disconnected client-counselor relationships. Using the case study method, 26 in-depth interviews were conducted with African American women. Data

Across the Bettor-Verse: an Open Banking Perspective on Gambling in the United Kingdom.

Open banking provides an opportunity to leverage bank transaction data to support gambling harm prevention by providing an objective and comprehensive view of individuals' gambling activities. In this study, we present a large-scale descriptive analysis of gambling transaction activity from an open banking dataset, representing a sample of 1,030,788 users of a credit scoring service in the UK for 2022. The median gambler (n = 650,502) transacted with 2 merchants, made 14 deposits, had a typical debit of £10.00, a net loss of £95.00, and deposited 0.53% of income. Consistent with prior gambling

Changes in sexual risk behavior among adolescents: is the HIV prevention programme in Nigeria yielding results?

This study conducted an analysis of the 2007 and 2012 National HIV and AIDS Reproductive Health Survey data with the aim of identifying the changes in high risk sexual behaviour among adolescents aged 15-19 years. It focused on changes in the history of use of condom with boyfriends/girlfriends, engagement in transactional sex, sex with multiple partners and age of sexual debut. Bivariate analysis was conducted to ascertain differences in the number of adolescents who engaged in these high sexual risk behaviours over the five-year study period. Data was also analysed for association between ri

An assessment of sexual risk behaviours among circumcised and uncircumcised men before and after the implementation of the safe male circumcision programme in Botswana.

HIV/AIDS prevalence is still high in Botswana. The main aim of this study was to assess and compare sexual risk behaviours of circumcised and uncircumcised men before and after the launch of the safe male circumcision programme. Data used for analyses were derived from the 2008 and 2013 Botswana AIDS Impact Surveys. Modified Poisson regression analysis was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) as measures of association between circumcision status and multiple sexual partners, transactional sex, inconsistent condom use and intergenerational sex. The proportion of circumcised men increased two

Statistical patterns in the Ethereum blockchain: Analysis of EOAs and smart contracts in ERC20 token network.

Scaling laws offer a powerful lens to understand complex transactional behaviors in decentralized systems. This study reveals distinctive statistical signatures in the transactional dynamics of ERC20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain by examining over 81 million token transfers across two independent time windows: July 2017 to March 2018 and December 2019 to February 2020. Transactions are categorized into four types: EOA-EOA, EOA-SC, SC-EOA, and SC-SC based on whether the interacting addresses are Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) or Smart Contracts (SCs), and analyzed across four equal period

Understanding the Offline Criminal Behavior of Individuals Who Live Stream Child Sexual Abuse.

Live streaming of child sexual abuse (CSA) involves the procurement and viewing of sexual abuse of children across the internet in real time, in exchange for money. These offenses leave little tangible evidence of the offense beyond a financial transaction, and metadata relating to the live-streaming session. This research analyzed the demographic, criminal history, and financial transaction characteristics of 209 individuals who live streamed child sexual abuse. A machine learning clustering technique was implemented to consider whether there were sub-groups present among these offenders, and

Factors Associated With HIV Testing Among Atlanta's Homeless Youth.

Homeless youth experience increased risk of contracting HIV, making HIV testing imperative in this population. We analyzed factors associated with HIV testing among homeless youth in Atlanta, Georgia using data from the 2015 Atlanta Youth Count and Needs Assessment. The analysis included 693 homeless youth aged 14-25 years, of whom 88.4% reported ever being tested for HIV, and 74.6% reported being tested within the previous year. Prevalence of ever testing for HIV was significantly higher among youth who reported risk factors for HIV (sexually active, transactional sex, or ever having an STI).

A Dual-Camera Edge Sensing Framework with Zone-Aware Multi-Object Tracking for Sensorless Smart Vending Cabinets.

Top-loading smart vending cabinets require precise transaction-level product detection under strict hardware and deployment constraints. In this paper, "sensorless" refers specifically to the absence of auxiliary product-level sensing hardware, such as RFID tags, weight sensors, shelf load cells, or product-slot instrumentation; the system still uses two camera sensors. Conventional snapshot-difference methods compare only a small number of frames at the beginning and end of a transaction and therefore cannot explicitly represent intermediate product motion, such as pickup, return, inspection,

Prevalence and Correlates of Violence Among Adolescents and Young Adults Living With HIV in Western Kenya: A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Violence against adolescents is underreported due to stigma and fear of retribution. This analysis used data from the Data-informed Stepped Care study. Young adults living with HIV (YLH) ages 10-24 years attending nine health care facilities in Western Kenya were enrolled. Behavioral survey data were collected at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. Among 1,384 YLH, prevalence of lifetime violence was 24% and 25% in female and male patients <20 years, and 48% and 42%, respectively, among those 20+ years. Among female patients <20 years, violence was associated with depression (prevalence ratio [

Sexual Relationship Typologies, Multilevel Determinants, and HIV Among Adolescent Mothers in Eastern and Southern Africa: A Multilevel Latent Class Analysis.

In Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA), there is heterogeneity within adolescent mothers' (AMs') sexual relationships. However, existing studies focus on single relationship characteristics, even though these characteristics do not operate in isolation. Moreover, no studies have examined multilevel predictors of AMs' relationships. Identifying and characterizing typologies by multilevel factors can inform targeted interventions to lower HIV risk. Data are from the Population-based HIV impact Assessment (PHIA) Project on AMs (15-19 years) from 9 ESA countries (N = 2,761). We conducted multilevel

Sexual victimization and intellectual disabilities among child welfare involved youth.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Youth with intellectual disabilities involved in child welfare systems are at greater risk of sexual victimization than youth who have not been investigated for child maltreatment. This study addresses a gap in the literature regarding older youth with intellectual disabilities who are sexually victimized and pushed to engage in transactional sex while they are transitioning from child welfare systems involvement. It does so by examining risk and protective factors at the individual, micro, exo, and macro systems levels. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study included

Application of the "syndemics" theory to explain unprotected sex and transactional sex: A crosssectional study in men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, and non-MSM in Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) in Colombia are highly affected by HIV. To improve understanding of the role of HIV risk behaviors in HIV acquisition, we used the syndemic framework, a useful concept to inform prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of four psychosocial conditions, namely, forced sex, history of childhood sexual abuse, frequent alcohol use, and illicit drug use on unprotected sex and the synergistic effects ("syndemic" effects) of these conditions on HIV risk behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled a total of 812 mal
