Carer Perspectives on the Influence of Spirituality, Religion and Culture on the Mental Health of African Australians.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health experiences among African Australians are influenced by cultural beliefs, spirituality, religion and caregiving expectations. This study explored carers' perspectives on how these factors shape mental health experiences and caregiving practices. METHODS: Guided by Leininger's transcultural nursing framework, a descriptive phenomenological design using Colaizzi's method was employed. Ten African Australian carers, recruited through purposive and snowball sampling, participated in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Two themes emerged: (a) cultural and social influ

Summer migrant students learn healthy choices through videography.

The purpose of this single-group pre- and posttest intervention pilot study was to teach middle school migrant farmworker children the benefits of healthy eating and activity using a multimedia and ethnic-tailored health curriculum, embedded in a 7-week summer Migrant Education Program. Conceptual frameworks were from transcultural nursing, education, and child development. Student-made video productions enhanced classroom learning and content retention. Outcomes were health infomercials, body mass index (BMI), BMI percentile, muscle strength and flexibility, and We Can! and Coordinated Approa

Culturally competent care for members of sexual minorities.

Culture has historically been interpreted as the beliefs, mores, and lifeways of groups of people primarily related to race and ethnicity. However, individuals who self identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgendered experience ethnocentrism when seeking care from medical and health professionals. Using the principles and concepts of Lenninger's theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality, members of sexual minorities can assist their health care providers to provide culturally sensitive and ethical care.

Cultural awareness of Inuit patients' experiences with emergency nursing care.

Around 1500 Inuit patients fly annually from Nunavik to hospital centres in Montreal. This is a tense experience for many Inuit, due to cultural differences, and task-driven nursing practices often inadequately meeting their holistic health beliefs. In this qualitative study, we explored the experiences of Inuit patients with emergency nursing (EN) in the McGill University Health Centre, to inform on the best holistic nursing practices to meet culturally specific needs. Data analysis from semi-structured interviews with four participants generated a single theme: "rationalizing the care". Whil

Discovering Their Needs: Southern Rural Women of East India.

This qualitative, descriptive, phenomenological study explored how southern, rural women in India (N = 14) view health, how they learned about health, and what health education they desired. Health education classes were offered, based on participants' responses. Recommendations are offered for a best practice model that could potentially enhance the efforts of non-Indian nurses desiring to assist impoverished women and families in India.

[The importance of a transcultural clinical approach in the context of traumatic migration].

The transcultural dimension must necessarily be taken into account in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders, as shown by the case of a young immigrant woman whose request for clinical care is motivated by an anxiety-depressive state that she explains by difficulties in adapting to a poorly mastered cultural disparity. This situation reveals that her difficulties are the expression of acculturation and post-traumatic stress inherent in war trauma.

Learning Cultural Humility Through Stories and Global Service-Learning.

Service-learning experiences are utilized by nursing programs to increase cultural learning for students. Through storytelling, the concept of cultural humility can be explained to students preparing for upcoming intercultural experiences. This case study describes the experience of nursing students and educators on their first service-learning trip to Kenya, and how intercultural issues were navigated as students developed cultural humility. The story now is shared in preparation for subsequent international student nursing trips. The utilization of storytelling can be a model for others prep

Student nurses' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients.

A study of Baccalaureate nursing students was conducted to explore and describe undergraduate nursing students' experience of interaction with culturally diverse psychiatric patients. Thirty-seven nursing students participated in this research project. Sixteen of the students came from a predominantly black university and the other twenty-one students came from a predominantly white university. Both universities are situated in the same city and allocate their nursing students to the same psychiatric hospital for practical experience. The student nurses reported having experienced both positiv

The Dutch version of the Dignity Therapy Question Protocol for individual Dutch nursing home residents without cognitive impairments (during COVID-19): a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Dignity therapy is a brief, structured psychotherapeutic intervention originally designed to help last-stage cancer patients maintain their dignity. It consists of a semi-structured interview encouraging patients to talk about their lives. The recorded session are transcribed and edited, after which the patient has the opportunity to make further changes to the final document. It can be shared with whom the patient likes. We cross-culturally translated dignity therapy into Dutch and explored its feasibility of applying it to Dutch cognitively capable nursing home residents. METHOD

When rites are wrong.

140 million girls and women worldwide have undergone some form of female genital mutilation (FGM). The African Women's Clinic at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust is one of eight UK centres providing care and support for women experiencing problems as a result of FGM. FGM is most commonly performed in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. FGM is illegal in the UK. FGM can cause recurrent urinary tract infection, painful sexual intercourse and menstruation, and difficulties with childbirth. A ten-minute procedure under local anaesthetic can help with micturition and menstruation. Revers

Moving beyond the "exotic": applying postcolonial theory in health research.

Postcolonialism offers nursing scholarship a framework for understanding culture and identity as fluid and complex, historically situated, and discursively constructed. This article describes one version of implementing postcolonial theory, using examples from a research project conducted with urban American Indians on the topic of diabetes. I demonstrate the influence and value of postcolonialism throughout the research process. A postcolonial approach can help nursing researchers and practitioners avoid reproducing injustices and stereotypes, illuminate the complexities of life at the inters

Factors contributing to poor glycaemic control in diabetic patients at Mopani District.

Diabetes mellitus is not only a major burden in the developed world, it is also an increasing health problem in less developed countries. Although health education could be a tool to achieve better glycaemic control, it is important to understand that health education should be adjusted to patients' literacy, cultural environment and economic status. Among other factors, lack of money has an influence on the outcome of diabetes mellitus. Thus the purpose of the study is to identify factors contributing to poor glycaemia control in diabetic patients. Data was collected using self-report questio

Culturally appropriate care for pregnant Latina women who are victims of domestic violence.

Latina women who are pregnant and experiencing domestic violence face many barriers to accessing care and finding culturally appropriate services. These barriers are entwined in a complex web of social, cultural, economic, political, and legal issues. Leininger's cultural care model is presented as a framework to discuss culturally appropriate assessment of Latina women in various health care settings. Recommendations are made for the role of nurses in primary prevention interventions at the individual and community levels.

Clinical faculty development: using simulation to demonstrate and practice clinical teaching.

Students spend more time in clinical settings with smaller student-to-faculty learning ratios than in the didactic setting, yet many clinical faculty have had little exposure to evidence-based teaching strategies and learning theories. Orientation for newly employed clinical faculty, whether novices or experienced teachers, typically focuses on the details of running the clinical experience and not on teaching and learning. Multiple barriers for clinical faculty limit the ability to provide consistent and comprehensive education. The purpose of this article is to share the use of simulation as

The leading causes of illness and death among American Indians are heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries (accidents), diabetes, and stroke. American Indians also have a high prevalence of obesity, chronic renal failure, alcoholism, and are at increased risk for mental health issues and suicide.
