Surgical repair of brachial plexus injury: a multinational survey of experienced peripheral nerve surgeons.

OBJECT: Brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) are often devastating events that lead to upper-extremity paralysis, rendering the limb a painful extraneous appendage. Fortunately, there are several nerve repair techniques that provide restoration of some function. Although there is general agreement in the medical community concerning which patients may benefit from surgical intervention, the actual repair technique for a given lesion is less clear. The authors sought to identify and better define areas of agreement and disagreement among experienced peripheral nerve surgeons as to the management of

DFT study of free radical scavenging mechanisms in UiO-66-(OH)2 and UiO-66-NH2 MOFs.

This study employs density functional theory (DFT) to investigate three common free radical scavenging mechanisms (hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), single electron transfer proton transfer (SET-PT), and sequential proton loss electron transfer (SPLET)) in UiO-66-(OH)2 and UiO-66-NH2 metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles under gas, benzene and aqueous phase conditions. The reaction processes between UiO-66-(OH)2/UiO-66-NH2 and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) were simulated to elucidate detailed radical capture pathways, and the computational results were validated by macroscopic DPPH radical scaveng

Rolling-Enabled Nonplanar Heterogeneous Integration for Polarization-Diverse Nanolasers on Silicon Photonics.

The continued advancement of silicon photonics increasingly relies on heterogeneous integration beyond monolithic fabrication, with transfer printing emerging as a powerful strategy for deterministic and high-precision assembly. However, existing transfer-printing strategies remain fundamentally limited to planar integration, restricting access to orientation-dependent optical functionalities. Here, we introduce a rolling-enabled transfer-printing strategy that enables deterministic nonplanar heterogeneous integration through precise mechanical orientation control at the nanoscale. [A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model to describe the transfer of organic solvents in the human body. Simulation of kinetic behavior of trichloroethylene using a spreadsheet program].

A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was developed to describe the transfer of organic solvent vapors in the human body. The model was composed of seven tissue compartments, i.e., lungs, vessel-rich tissues, vessel-poor tissues, muscles, fat tissues, gastrointestinal tissues, and liver, each being interconnected by the blood flow system. Transfer of organic solvents was expressed in the form of simultaneous differential equations, which were then solved numerically on a personal computer using a simple spreadsheet program. The simulation of pharmacokinetic behavior of trichloroethylen

Appropriateness of patients transferred with orthopedic injuries: experience of a level I trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Trauma patients are frequently transferred to a higher level of care for specialized orthopedic care. Many of these transfers are not necessary and waste valuable resources. The purpose of this study was to quantify our own experience and to assess the appropriateness of orthopedic transfers to a level I trauma center emergency department. METHODS: A retrospective review of orthopedic emergency department transfers to a level I trauma center was performed. Data collected included time of transfer, injury severity score (ISS), age, gender, race, orthopedic coverage at transfer inst

Quantifying influence and information transfer in a modified Vicsek model with nonreciprocal interactions.

Understanding information transfer among individuals is fundamental to revealing the collective dynamics of complex systems. Information transfer has been quantified using various information-theoretic tools and assigned the concept of influence. However, information-theoretic measures are inherently statistical, not causal, and influence in the context of causal inference implies a causal relation, so equating influence with information transfer creates conceptual confusion and interpretational challenges. Here, we introduce an influence-based Vicsek model with nonreciprocal interactions to d

Determination of individual proton affinities of reserpine from its UV-vis and charge-transfer spectra.

Proton affinities of the two N atoms of reserpine (methyl-11,17alpha-dimethoxy-18beta-[(3,4,5-trimethoxybenzoyl)oxy]-3beta,20alpha-yohimban-16beta-carboxylate) have been determined in two ways from the pH-dependent variation of the UV-vis absorption spectra (i) of reserpine itself and (ii) of the charge-transfer (CT) spectra of its complexes with o-chloranil, p-chloranil, and DDQ in aqueous medium (containing 0.1% ethanol v/v). For the second method, the CT absorption bands of the complexes were determined, their formation constants were estimated by a modified Benesi-Hildebrand equation, and

Regioselective long-range proton transfer in new rifamycin antibiotics: a process in which crown ethers act as stronger Brønsted bases than amines.

Water-mediated proton transfer in six new derivatives of 3-formylrifamycin SV that contain crown, aza-crown, and benzo-crown ether rings were investigated by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. (1)H-(1)H COSY couplings provide evidence for the formation of zwitterionic structures of the aza-crown and crown ether derivatives of rifamycin, in which a proton from one of the phenolic groups is transferred to tertiary and secondary nitrogen atoms. The increased intensity of the continuous absorption in the mid-infrared region together with the NMR data indicate proton transfer from the phenol group of the r

Excellent interobserver agreement and steep learning curve for target volume delineation for stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation using a commercial software.

AIMS: Stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) has emerged as bail-out treatment for ventricular tachycardia (VT). Accurate, reproducible, and easy-to-use data transfer from electroanatomical mapping (EAM) systems to radiotherapy planning CT is desirable. We aim to evaluate interobserver variability, ease of use, and learning curve for EAM based target volume (CardTV-EPinv) creation and transfer using available software packages. METHODS AND RESULTS: In patients considered for STAR, CardTV-EPinv were created using ADAS and Slicer3D for workflow comparison. Four CardTV-EPinv (clinically ta

Unlimited Discretion: How Unchecked Bureaucratic Discretion Can Threaten Abortion Availability.

Previous research has assessed the impact of state regulations on abortion clinics and patients, but how bureaucrats implement them is less understood and is increasingly important as states arbitrate abortion regulation. The authors conducted a case study of how bureaucrats use discretion to implement state regulations on abortion, focusing on two abortion facilities in southwest Ohio from 2010 to 2022. Ohio abortion facilities are required to obtain a written transfer agreement, despite it offering no demonstrable health or safety benefits. The authors find that state requirements for obtain

Combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics studies of the electron-transfer reactions involving carbon tetrachloride in solution.

The reductive dechlorination of carbon tetrachloride, CCl4, by a concerted electron transfer-bond breaking mechanism was studied using combined high level quantum mechanical and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach. The free energy activation barriers for the first electron-transfer step were determined from the dissociation profiles of CCl4 and *CCl4(-) complexes in aqueous phase using hybrid-free energy QM/MM methodologies. Both density functional and coupled cluster perturbative triples (CCSD(T)) versions of QM/MM methods were investigated. The impact of the implicit solvent description bas

Ionization-Induced Double Charge Transfer in Metallophthalocyanines Revealed by Ab Initio Simulation of 2p Photoelectron Spectra.

We report on a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the metal 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra of transition-metal phthalocyanines MnPc, FePc, and CoPc. Using a multiconfigurational approach including spin-orbit coupling, we obtain nearly quantitative agreement with experiment. In all investigated systems, we found an unexpected and robust physical effect induced by core ionization, namely a drastic reorganization of the valence electronic structure. This reorganization is characterized by a pronounced stabilization of doubly excited ligand-to-metal charge-transfer configurations,

A Multicenter Validation of a Novel Prediction Model for Elbow Flexion Recovery after Nerve Transfer Surgery in Brachial Plexus Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Nerve transfer surgery for brachial plexus injuries exhibits variable success rates, potentially resulting in prolonged limb dysfunction for more than 2 years. A proposed prediction model has been developed to predict the unsuccessful recovery of elbow flexion after the surgery. The model consisted of six variables, namely body mass index 23 kg/m2 or more, smoking, total arm type, donor nerve, ipsilateral upper extremity fracture, and ipsilateral vascular injury. This study aimed to assess the external validity of the model for wider applicability. METHODS: This retrospective anal

Comparison of response criteria in palliative radiotherapy for bleeding gastric cancer: A secondary analysis of the JROSG 17-3 multicenter prospective observational study.

PURPOSE: In radiotherapy for bleeding gastric cancer, no standard response definition exists; studies have used transfusion-only or transfusion-plus-hemoglobin criteria. After inter-facility transfer or during home care-sometimes following palliative radiotherapy-laboratory results from other facilities are often unavailable, leaving patients inevaluable. We therefore tested whether omitting hemoglobin compromises the precision of response assessment. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In criteria A, referring to our original study, patients were diagnosed as responders when all the following three condi

In vivo gas transfer performance of the intravascular oxygenator in acute respiratory failure.

The intravascular oxygenator (IVOX) has undergone both animal and clinical trials. Data from the animal studies have demonstrated that the device is capable of transferring up to approximately 100 ml/min of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Initial data from the human trials suggest that gas transfer, although approaching these levels, varied widely in patients with respiratory failure. We studied the factors affecting gas exchange in 26 patients with severe acute respiratory failure who underwent intravenacaval support of gas exchange with IVOX. The patients underwent monitoring of IVOX gas transfer
