Preliminary investigation of transfer between single-word decoding ability and contextual reading comprehension by poor readers in grade six.

The study sought to investigate transfer between single-word decoding skill and contextual reading comprehension using 60 sixth grade pupils classified as 30 poor and 30 very poor readers. There were two training groups, content-specific and non-content-specific. One group received single-word decoding training, which led to decoding mastery of all words to be read in narrative prose passages and the accompanying literal and inferential comprehension questions. The other group learned to identify and pronounce words, equal in difficulty and number to those of the content-specific group but nev

Practice-related optimization and transfer of executive functions: a general review and a specific realization of their mechanisms in dual tasks.

Improvements in performing demanding and complex task situations are typically related to the optimization of executive functions and efficient behavioral control. The present study systematizes and reviews the optimization of different executive function types: Shifting, Inhibition, Updating, and Dual tasking. In particular, we focus on optimisations of these functions with training and on transfer effects of related training skills to non-trained situations. The aim of the study's empirical part (see also Appendix) was to investigate the specific mechanisms of executive functions in the cont

Research progress on the impact of anxiety and depression on embryo transfer outcomes of in vitro fertilization.

Infertile women who receive in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) often present psychological distress such as anxiety, depression and perceived stress. This adverse psychological state can affect the immune homeostasis at the mother-fetus interface, the incubation of blastula and the receptivity of the maternal endometrium through the psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrine network, which in turns affect the proliferation, invasion and vascular remodeling of the embryo trophoblast, and reduces the success rate of embryo transfer. This adverse outcome of embryo transfer will further aggravate

Interplay of endocrine and psychological factors in IVF/ICSI outcomes: a prospective cohort analysis.

Infertility poses considerable challenges to both the endocrine system and psychological well-being of affected women. In particular, those undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) confront not only physiological demands but also significant psychological stress. Despite the potential interplay between endocrine factors and psychological status in ART outcomes, large-scale investigations remain limited. In this prospective study, we enrolled 493 women undergoing in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). We collected baseline demogr

Women's experiences of transfer from a midwife-led to a consultant-led maternity unit in the UK during late pregnancy and labor.

PURPOSE: This study explored the experiences of women who were transferred from a midwife-led to a distant consultant obstetric unit before or during labor. BACKGROUND: Little attention is given to the psychological impact of transfer, particular when it takes place prior to labor. METHOD: Narrative and progressively focused interviews were conducted with 18 women who faced or experienced transfer prior to or during labor. The data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. RESULTS: The core category in the transferred group was loss. This related to loss of choice, control, continuity

Stress alters cutaneous permeability barrier homeostasis.

Recent studies have shown that psychological stress can influence cutaneous barrier function, suggesting that this form of stress could trigger or aggravate skin disease. In the present study, we demonstrate that transfer of hairless mice to a different cage delays barrier recovery rates. Pretreatment with a phenothiazine sedative, chlorpromazine, before transfer of animals restored the kinetics of barrier recovery toward normal, suggesting that psychological stress is the basis for this alteration in barrier homeostasis. To determine the mechanism linking psychological stress to altered barri

Transfer of statistical learning from speech perception to production generalizes to reading.

Past research has shown that short-term exposure to speech carrying certain acoustic statistics transfers robustly to speech production. However, all studies reporting such transfer have used auditory repetition tasks. Therefore, it is unclear whether perception-production transfer in the acoustic-phonetic domain extends to tasks without an auditory model to probe production. We answer this question in two experiments. Experiment 1 shows that people read aloud the words BEER and PEER differently after exposure to auditory samples of "beer" and "peer" drawn from a distribution of standard Ameri

The Role of Income on the Relationship Between the Brazilian Cash Transfer Program (Programa Bolsa Família) and Intimate Partner Violence: Evidence From a Multigroup Path Analysis.

Several initiatives are being proposed to reduce the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) worldwide. Actions aimed at women's economic empowerment through income transfer programs are one of those. Still, the literature on their impact is scarce and controversial. This study attempts to shed some light on this matter assessing whether the Brazilian Conditional Cash Transfer Program (Programa Bolsa Família [PBF]) is a protective factor for psychological and physical IPV against women in families of different levels of income. This is a cross-sectional, household-based study conducted in

Bilateral Metacarpal Hands: Reconstruction With 6 Toe Transfers.

Background: Bilateral metacarpal hand injuries are extremely rare, but probably represent the most difficult reconstructive challenge in hand surgery. Methods: We discuss the various options for metacarpal hand reconstruction, including the Krukenberg procedure, bionic prostheses, multiple toe-to-hand transfers, and possibly hand transplantation, and present the long-term functional outcomes, gait analysis, and psychological evaluation after a 4-stage reconstruction of bilateral metacarpal hands in a child using 6 toe-to-hand transfers-bilateral great toe transfers to reconstruct both thumbs a

Raw Object Identification.

This paper attempts to deal with a specific kind of pathological identification-"raw object identification"-which tends to appear as concrete physiological phenomena, trying to escape meaning and integration. These somatic manifestations stem from early traumatic experiences with a meaningful object and entrap-as revealed through analysis-specific significant qualities of that object. A massive splitting ensues between body and mind, self and object, relation and identification. Certain properties of the object are then experienced as a foreign body in the subject and are defensively identifie

The perverse subject of analysis.

In this paper I suggest that the analysis of perversion necessarily involves the elaboration and analysis of a perverse transference-countertransference. Both analyst and analysand contribute to and participate in the perverse transference-countertransference which intersubjective construction is powerfully shaped by the perverse structure of the patient's unconscious internal object world. In the fragment of an analysis that is presented, I illustrate the way in which the analyst makes use of his experience in (of) the transference-countertransference in gaining understanding of the perverse

Health-related quality of life of young people with long-term illnesses before and after transfer from child to adult healthcare.

BACKGROUND: The numbers of children with long-term illnesses surviving into adulthood and transferring from child to adult services has increased dramatically in the last 30 years. This study aimed to examine health-related quality of life pre- and post-transfer from child to adult healthcare for young people with three long-term illnesses. METHODS: A total of 217 young people with cystic fibrosis, congenital heart defects or diabetes attending child and adult hospital services in Dublin, Ireland completed a questionnaire survey. Multiple linear regression was used to identify predictors of f

Memory traces and sensory perceptions. When dance enters the session.

This paper looks at how sensory perception and motility in the session can activate and reshape memory-traces of unconscious infantile sexuality. It investigates how listening to them in the transference serves as an appeal to drive representation, the redeployment of the autoerotism of infantile sexuality and its participation in the production of fantasy, contributing to the accomplishment of infantile wishes. The author explores this hypothesis in the psychoanalytic work of a female patient who practises dance and makes particular use of sensory perceptions and motility in the session. She

The effect of motor solution exploration on the transferability of an acquired motor skill.

Movement variability can either facilitate or impede motor learning, dependent on the context of the learning environment. Most previous studies have evaluated reward- or reinforcement-based learning paradigms with a clear task goal and/or extrinsic feedback. We assessed the effect of movement variability when learning the kettlebell swing in a learner-regulated context, where participants relied solely on intrinsic feedback. We aimed to determine if high variability when first practicing the kettlebell swing enabled exploration of motor solutions that could be utilized to perform the movement

A derived transfer of simple discrimination and self-reported arousal functions in spider fearful and non-spider-fearful participants.

Two experiments investigated the derived transfer of functions through equivalence relations established using a stimulus pairing observation procedure. In Experiment 1, participants were trained on a simple discrimination (A1+/A2-) and then a stimulus pairing observation procedure was used to establish 4 stimulus pairings (A1-B1, A2-B2, B1-C1, B2-C2). Subsequently, a transfer of the simple discrimination functions through equivalence relations was observed (e.g., C1+/C2-). These procedures were modified in Experiment 2, which demonstrated that spider-fearful and non-spider-fearful participant

A comparison of psychological functioning in women at different stages of in vitro fertilization treatment using the mean affect adjective check list.

PURPOSE: The objectives were to identify the stage/s of IVF treatment where a woman is most vulnerable to psychological stress, and to assess the Mean Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL) as a measure of psychological functioning during IVF treatment, which has hitherto not been reported. METHODS: Thirty-seven women undergoing IVF treatment according to the long protocol of controlled ovarian stimulation completed the MAACL questionnaire at the following stages: (a) before treatment (visit 1), (b) before embryo transfer (visit 2), and (c) before pregnancy test (visit 3). Response-independent outcome presentations dissociate stimulus and value based choice.

A stimulus that predicts the delivery of a specific food outcome can bias performance towards instrumental actions that earn that same outcome in a phenomenon known as specific Pavlovian-instrumental transfer (PIT). The precise mechanism by which the specific instrumental action is selected under these circumstances has remained elusive. The present set of experiments explored whether treatments that undermine the response-outcome (R-O) association also affect the expression of specific PIT. Consistent with previous work, in Experiment 1 we showed that specific PIT remains intact after an inst

Behaviour change, the itchy spot of healthcare quality improvement: How can psychology theory and skills help to scratch the itch?

Despite the clear utility and transferability, National Health Service (NHS) quality improvement initiatives have yet to benefit fully from what is already known within health psychology. Thus far, evidence from established, seminal behaviour change theory and practice have been ignored in favour of newly developed models and frameworks. Further, whilst there is a growing interest in what is commonly referred to as 'human factors' of change and improvement, there is scant transferability of known psychologically informed implementation skills into routine NHS Improvement practice. The science
