Fight bite injuries of the hand are common presentations in A&E departments and usually result from a fist blow to the mouth. The authors report a case of a 24-year-old man who presented 6 weeks after an injury to his right wrist following an altercation. Radiographic examination and CT scans were in keeping with a tooth fragment embedded in the trapezoid. However, post excision histology subsequently revealed the lesion to be a solitary osteochondroma of the trapezoid. Osteochondromas are benign lesions of bony or cartilaginous origin and are usually found in the metaphyseal region of long bo

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study is to compare the performance of 4 titanium miniplates (alpha, kappa, rhomboidal, and trapezoidal) used for the fixation of condylar neck fractures by implementing computational finite element analysis.
METHODS: Three-dimensional models of the plates were used to reduce a virtually created condylar neck fracture in a mandible obtained from a computed tomography scan of a healthy adult. The developed models were analyzed, making use of the finite element method under 2 loading scenarios: a reduced postoperative bite force of 135 N and a clenching force

Flexion deformity of the haemophilic knee is a considerable cause of disability and may need to be managed surgically in severe cases. We have used a trapezoid supracondylar femoral extension osteotomy to correct severe knee flexion deformity. Nine severe haemophilic patients with contractures >30 degrees that were unresponsive to conservative measures underwent 11 trapezoid osteotomies. The angle of deformity was measured using anteroposterior and lateral knee X-ray films at maximum extension. Factor levels of 80-100% were achieved before the operation. A trapezoid osteotomy of the distal fem

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of partial or complete trapezoidectomy in conjunction with trapezium resection on proximal migration of the index metacarpal during axial loading.
METHODS: Five specimens from below the elbow were obtained from fresh-frozen cadavers. A customized vise was used to position the wrist in 20 degrees extension and 5 degrees ulnar deviation, simulating a power grip. The index metacarpal was instrumented to allow axial loading at 125 N and 250 N. Specimens were tested under 4 experimental conditions: (1) in the intact state, (2) after trapezial resection, (3) after pa

INTRODUCTION: Isolated trapezoid fractures are extremely rare, accounting for only 0.2%-0.4% of all carpal fractures. Due to their infrequency and vague clinical presentation, these fractures are often overlooked in initial assessments. The strong ligamentous connections of the trapezoid contribute to its inherent stability, making fractures uncommon.
CASE PRESENTATION: A middle-aged man presented with persistent wrist pain for 2 months following a fall on an outstretched hand. Initial radiographs were unremarkable, leading to conservative treatment. However, persistent symptoms prompted furt

BACKGROUND: Lateral column lengthening (LCL) has been used for correction of flatfoot deformity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of LCL graft shape on tarsal bone position and talonavicular and subtalar joint pressure.
METHODS: A flatfoot model was created in 6 cadaveric specimens. Corrective LCL was performed using a rectangular graft or a trapezoidal graft with the broad surface oriented dorsally, laterally, or plantarly. Bony surface markers were digitized to calculate angular parameters used in the evaluation of flatfoot deformity. Contact pressure and area in the su

PURPOSE: Isolated trapezoid fractures are rare injuries, particularly among adolescents, constituting only 0.4% of all carpal bone fractures. This study aims to present two cases of isolated trapezoid fracture in adolescent goalkeepers and a scoping review of the literature to provide guidelines for the management of this injury.
METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a scoping review of reported cases was conducted. Two hundred and twenty articles were found using PubMed and Google Scholar. After full-text review, a total of 30 cases from 22 articles along with our 2 cases were analyzed b

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is relatively uncommon in the carpal bones, although it most frequently involves the lunate and scaphoid. The trapezoid has abundant vascular channels from a rich network of dorsal and palmar vessels, and only a few cases of AVN have been reported in adults who sustained a traumatic insult. We present a rare case of idiopathic AVN of the trapezoid in an adolescent presenting with refractory pain at the second metacarpal base. Over a period of 36 months, follow-up symptom evaluations and serial magnetic resonance images showed prominent gradual improvement, consistent w

Disruptive forces from wrist trauma are thought to fracture bone or disrupt ligaments. Two cases are presented to demonstrate the simultaneous occurrence of acute scaphoid fracture and scapholunate gap. Recommended treatment in acute cases is open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture and open stabilization of the scaphoid. In chronic cases, we recommend open reduction and internal fixation with bone graft to the scaphoid nonunion combined with fusion of the scaphoid-trapezium-trapezoid joint.

BACKGROUND: Carpal synostoses are congenital defects characterised by complete or incomplete coalition of two or more carpal bones. Although most of these defects are discovered only incidentally, sometimes they become clinically manifest. Among the different types of carpal coalition, the synostosis between capitate and trapezoid bones is quite rare, with only sparse data available in the literature. The aim of this report was to describe a case of capitate-trapezoid synostosis (CTS) observed in an ancient human skeleton, as well as to scrutinise the pertinent literature in order to assess fo

This paper reports a longitudinal study of carpal bone development in 125 children (98 boys, 27 girls) attending a clinic for Perthes' disease. The age at appearance of ossification in each carpal bone was estimated by studying consecutive radiographs obtained at six-months intervals. The results were compared with the findings for normal children published by Stuart et al. Three radiologic groups of carpal bone maturation are defined: not delayed (capitate and hamate); markedly delayed (triquetral and lunate); and slightly delayed (scaphoid, trapezium, and trapezoid). Overall, the bone age de

Osteoarthritis of the scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal joint is frequent but often pain-free or well tolerated with non-surgical treatment. Surgical options are numerous and none seems to have clear evidence of superiority. In addition to well-established procedures, such as scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal joint arthrodesis, distal scaphoid resection and trapeziectomy, more recent surgical techniques have been reported. These include scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal arthroplasty and arthroscopic treatment. This article provides an overview of the procedures and their outcomes that can be proposed for isolated sca

BACKGROUND: Persistent instability and altered scapular mechanics after acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) reconstruction may stem from inadequate replication of native coracoclavicular (CC) ligament function. However, in vivo data on postoperative CC ligament behavior during dynamic shoulder motion remain lacking.
PURPOSE: To assess in vivo functional distance and timing characteristics of the conoid and trapezoid ligaments during active shoulder elevation after ACJ reconstruction, using dynamic stereo x-ray (DSX) imaging and patient-specific 3-dimensional (3D) models.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectio

BACKGROUND: Dental implants assisting unilateral free end mandibular partial dentures (RPDs) improve their performance and prognosis, however, no consensus exists on the type of thread used in these implants. The current work studied the effect of dental implant thread design on stress distribution around dental implants assisting unilateral free end RPDs using strain gauges and finite element analysis to select the best performing thread design.
METHODS: Twenty-four custom made titanium-aluminum-vanadium (Ti-6Al-4 V) implants were designed and milled 4 thread designs; V-shaped, buttress, rev

Multiple metacarpal dislocations combined with carpal fracture - dislocations are rare injuries. We report a new combination of these injuries where fracture-dislocation of the base of the 1st metacarpal bone occurred simultaneously with a comminuted fracture of the trapezium, dislocation of the trapezoid and metacarpal joints (2nd to 5th) and an avulsion fracture of the hamate. This specific carpal injury has not been previously described and our description will contribute to understanding the mechanism of these complex injuries. The injury pattern in the case featured here was multifaceted

Plate and screw osteosynthesis remains essential in orthopedics especially for the fixation of femoral fracture and other long bone injury. The objective of this investigation was to analyze the behavior of a titanium-plated and screwed femur during realistic loading while analyzing stress, strain, and displacement. The square, round, trapezoidal, and triangular screw thread profiles were investigated in terms of their transmission behavior on the head, shaft, and plates. Square thread profiles distribute the stress more uniformly, which results in a reduction in both peak and global von Mises
