Trematode infections in cattle in Arumeru District, Tanzania are associated with irrigation.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between the environment and infection of cattle with trematodes was studied at Arumeru District, Arusha Region, northern Tanzania. Randomly selected villages were grouped into three cattle management strata, (i) zero-grazing (ZZ) (ii) communal grazing without irrigation (ZC) and (iii) communal grazing with irrigation (ZCI). METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from 241 cattle, and processed using the Flukefinder method. Snail intermediate hosts were collected with a snail scoop from the water bodies in the study villages and identified morphologically. RESULTS:

Food-borne trematode infections of humans in the United States of America.

This review examines the literature on imported (allochthonous) and local (autochthonous) cases of food-borne trematode (FBT) infections in the United States of America (USA) from 1890 to 2009. Most of the literature is concerned with imported cases of the opisthorchiids Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini. These flukes cause serious pathology in the liver and biliary system of humans. Chronic cases may induce liver (hepatocarcinoma) and bile duct (cholangiocarcinoma) cancers in humans. Clonorchiasis and opithorchiasis are preventable diseases that can be avoided by eating properly

Epidemiology and control of trematode infections in cattle in Zimbabwe: a review.

In this paper the main epidemiological aspects of the major domestic ruminant trematode infections in Zimbabwe are reviewed and discussed with regard to the available options for control. Seasonal occurrence of amphistomes, Fasciola gigantica and Schistosoma mattheei are considered both in the definitive and intermediate hosts. The regional distribution of the trematodes is reviewed in relation to the distribution patterns of their snail intermediate hosts. Based on the epidemiological features of the trematodes, practical control measures are suggested.

Mucocutaneous manifestations of helminth infections: Trematodes and cestodes.

In the 21st century, despite increased international travel for vacation, work, and medical missions and immigration into the United States, there is little published in the dermatology literature regarding the cutaneous manifestations of helminth infections. It has been estimated that 20% to 70% of international travelers suffer from some travel-related health problem. Approximately 17% of travelers seek medical care because of cutaneous disorders, many related to infectious etiologies. This review will focus on cutaneous diseases caused by helminth infections. Part I of the review focused on

Infection of the mastoid bone with a Paragonimus-like trematode.

Three unusual cases of mastoid abscess are described. Case histories and the clinical, laboratory, radiological, surgical, and histopathological findings in the patients are reported. Operculated eggs measuring about 60 mu times 40 mu were seen in pus obtained from two cases, but no adult worm was recovered. The findings suggest that the infections could have been caused by either Paragonimus species or Poikilorchis (Achillurbania) species.

Combined Effects of Pesticides and Trematode Infections on Hourglass Tree Frog Polypedates cruciger.

The impact of widespread and common environmental factors, such as chemical contaminants, on infectious disease risk in amphibians is particularly important because both chemical contaminants and infectious disease have been implicated in worldwide amphibian declines. Here we report on the lone and combined effects of exposure to parasitic cercariae (larval stage) of the digenetic trematode, Acanthostomum burminis, and four commonly used pesticides (insecticides: chlorpyrifos, dimethoate; herbicides: glyphosate, propanil) at ecologically relevant concentrations on the survival, growth, and dev

A large-scale epidemiological investigation on trematode infections in small ruminants in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The important trematode species in small ruminants: Paramphistomum sp., Fasciola spp. and Schistosoma spp. seriously affect the productivity of domestic ruminants in endemic areas. METHODS: In the present study, we identified the potential risk factors associated with trematodes infections in small ruminants in seven topographic zones of Bangladesh using simple sedimentation and modified Stoll' ova counting technique. RESULTS: A total of 2440 samples were examined, where 965 were found positive with one or more trematode species with an overall prevalence of 39.5% (95% CI, 37.6%-

Ileal proteomic changes associated with IL-25-mediated resistance against intestinal trematode infections.

BACKGROUND: Echinostoma caproni (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) is an intestinal trematode, which has been extensively used to investigate the factors that determine the rejection of intestinal helminths. In this sense, several studies have shown that IL-25 is critical for the development of resistance against E. caproni in mice. In fact, treatment of mice with recombinant IL-25 generates resistance against primary E. caproni infection. However, the mechanisms by which IL-25 induces resistance remain unknown. METHODS: To study the mechanisms responsible for resistance elicited by IL-25, we anal

Do behavioural defence mechanisms explain different levels of trematode infections in congeneric hosts?

Susceptibility and tolerance to parasite infection vary greatly between host species. The congeneric isopod species Austridotea annectens and Austridotea lacustris often occur in sympatry and can both serve as intermediate hosts for the trematode Maritrema poulini. However, the intensity and prevalence of infections vary greatly in natural populations, with A. annectens often being heavily infected and A. lacustris rarely being infected. To shed light on the factors that may be involved in infection avoidance in A. lacustris, 100 isopods were collected and experimentally exposed to M. poulini

QUANTIFYING BILATERAL INFECTION PATTERNS IN THE TREMATODE ALLOGLOSSIDIUM RENALE.

Within-host distributions of parasites can have relevance to parasite competition, parasite mating, transmission, and host health. We examined the within-host distribution of the adult trematode Alloglossidium renale infecting the paired antennal glands of grass shrimp. There are 4 possible parasite distributions for infections of paired organs: random, uniform, biased aggregation to 1 particular organ (e.g., left vs. right), or inconsistently biased (aggregated, but does not favor 1 side). Previous work has shown that morphological asymmetries in hosts can lead to biased infections of paired

Fatal human infection with mesocercariae of the trematode Alaria americana.

A fatal human infection with mesocercafiae of Alaria americana is described. Several thousand mesocercariae were estimated to be present in the peritoneal cavity, bronchial aspirate, brain, heart, kidney, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, pancreas, retroperitoneal adipose tissue, spinal cord, spleen, and stomach. Nine days from the onset of symptoms death resulted from asphyxiation due to extensive pulmonary hemorrhage probably caused by immun-mediated mechanisms. Circumstances suggest the victim probably ate inadequately cooked frog legs while hiking. Mesocercariae penetrated through the stomach wal

Infections by Hepatic Trematodes in Cats from Slaughterhouses in Vietnam.

Domestic cats are a final host for some hepatic trematodes, and cat meat is used for human consumption in several parts of northern Vietnam. Since there is no tradition for commercial cat rearing in the area, cats are purchased alive from other areas as well, i.e., southern Vietnam and neighboring countries, and brought to slaughterhouses. This uncontrolled trade in live cats could pose a risk for spread of various parasites, including hepatic trematodes. Hence, in this study, we investigated the infections by hepatic trematodes in cats from the slaughterhouses. Cat livers were sampled from 12

TREMATODE INFECTION OF FRESHWATER SNAIL, FAMILY BITHYNIIDAE IN THAILAND.

Opisthorchis viverrini is restricted to and requires for its aquatic life cycle only Bithynia snail as first intermediate host but many species of cyprinid fish as second intermediate hosts. A survey in Thailand of trematode infection in freshwater snails of the family Bithyniidae carried out during October 2008 - July 2009 found a total of 5,492 snails, classified into ten species distributed in various geographic areas. Bithyniafuniculata and Gabbia pygmaea were localized to the north, B. s. goniomphalos, Wattebledia siamensis and W. crosseana to northeast and B. s. siamensis, Hydrobioides n

Trematode Infection Prevalence Increases With Snail Richness: Observations From a 4-Year Study of Snail-Trematode Interactions.

Digenetic trematodes are valuable study organisms for exploring how biodiversity influences disease. In this study, we investigated the relationship between snail richness and trematode infection prevalence using data from a 4-year study (2019-2022) of eight wetland sites in Alberta, Canada. Trematode species were classified as specialists or generalists at the first-intermediate host level, and generalized linear mixed-effects models were employed to assess the relationship between snail richness and overall, generalist, and specialist infection prevalence. The findings indicate that as snail

Otitis media and a neck lump--current diagnostic challenges for Paragonimus-like trematode infections.

A 29 year-old Nigerian studying in the UK presented with a neck lump and otitis media. Paragonimus-like trematode eggs were found in the neck lump aspirate. Morphologically these eggs resembled Paragonimus uterobilateralis or Achillurbainia congolensis. We favoured the diagnosis of achillurbainiasis over extrapulmonary paragonimiasis on the basis of clinical features and because we could not amplify DNA sequences using PCR primers specific for Paragonimus species. We discuss current diagnostic challenges for this rare parasitic infection.

Development of a PCR Assay for Diagnosing Trematode (Opisthorchis and Haplorchis) Infections in Human Stools.

We developed a combined conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and real-time PCR (qPCR)-based assay for detecting and discriminating between Opisthorchis viverrini and Haplorchis taichui parasite infections. The first PCR amplifies the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes of parasites, and differential diagnosis is achieved by performing qPCR with specific primers and SYBR Green I. The detection limit of the assay was found to be 2.0 × 102 plasmid copies in a test in which a stool sample was spiked with a single egg, which is equivalent to 5 eggs per gram (EPG). The t

Trematode infection affects shell shape and size in Bulinus tropicus.

Trematodes can increase intraspecific variation in the phenotype of their intermediate snail host. However, the extent of such phenotypic changes remains unclear. We investigated the influence of trematode infection on the shell morphology of Bulinus tropicus, a common host of medically important trematodes. We focused on a snail population from crater lake Kasenda (Uganda). We sampled a single homogeneous littoral habitat to minimize the influence of environmental variation on shell phenotype, and barcoded snails to document snail genotypic variation. Among the 257 adult snails analysed, 99 t
