Corneal vascularization in the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) and three-dimensional reconstruction of vessels.

The cornea of the Florida manatee is unique and unusual in its anatomy in that blood vessels have been found throughout. In all other animal species, this is considered a pathological condition impeding vision, and is usually caused by injury or trauma. The purpose of this study was to more clearly describe corneal vascularization by examining the architecture through three-dimensional reconstruction in order to find possible patterns in size, distribution, and location of blood vessels relative to gender, age, location, and season. Twenty-six eyes from 22 individuals were prepared for histolo

Effects of Roscovitine and Serum Starvation on the Viability and G0/G1 Synchronization in Somatic Cells from the Antillean Manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus, Linnaeus 1758).

The success of nuclear reprogramming techniques, including the G0/G1 synchronization of somatic cells, depends on species-specific optimization. While roscovitine and serum starvation have been successfully applied in domestic and wild terrestrial mammals, their use in aquatic mammals remains poorly investigated. The development of cellular reprogramming protocols in Antillean manatees, a flagship and endangered aquatic species, represents a promising tool for advancing conservation efforts. This study evaluated the effects of 10 µM roscovitine (12 and 24 h) and serum starvation (0.5% serum fo

Thyroid hormones and serum iodine in clinically normal versus chronically malnourished Florida manatees Trichechus manatus latirostris.

An unusual mortality event (UME) was declared from December 2020 to April 2022 after increased deaths of emaciated Florida (FL) manatees Trichechus manatus latirostris occurred in the Indian River Lagoon (FL, USA) following seagrass reduction. While thyroid hormones are known to fluctuate with fasting, stress, and disease in pinnipeds and cetaceans, investigations in sirenians are limited. Serum from clinically normal free-ranging FL manatees (n = 35) and individuals affected by the UME (n = 20) was analyzed via radioimmunoassay and chemiluminescent immunoassays for total triiodothyronine (TT3…

Gross and microanatomic description of the dental pads of the Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, and their importance to mastication.

OBJECTIVE: Florida manatee feeding ecology is critical to species survival, but the role of dental pads in feeding has received limited attention. This study characterized the gross and microscopic anatomy of the manatee's dorsal and ventral dental pad in relation to these structures' importance in mastication, which furthers our understanding of manatee feeding and health. DESIGN: Whole heads from 6 animals (4 male and 2 female) of varying sizes were examined grossly. Sections (5 µm) from throughout the dorsal and ventral dental pads were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin to document microa

EVALUATION OF THE PHARMACOKINETIC BEHAVIOR OF TULATHROMYCIN (DRAXXIN) IN FLORIDA MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS) UNDERGOING MEDICAL REHABILITATION.

Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris) frequently present to rehabilitation care facilities for various conditions, including boat strike trauma, cold stress syndrome, and brevetoxicosis. Throughout the course of treatment, antimicrobial use to treat respiratory disease is frequently warranted. To date, clinicians have extrapolated dosages based on established information available in bovine and equine medicine. The routes of administration, efficacy, and treatment intervals are considerations in dealing with critical wild animals. The use of tulathromycin, a triamilide antibiotic, …

Disseminated toxoplasmosis Toxoplasma gondii in a wild Florida manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris and seroprevalence in two wild populations.

Marine mammals are important indicators for ecosystem health and serve as sentinel species for infectious agents including zoonoses. Histological examination of tissues from a stranded Florida manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris revealed protozoal cysts in the cerebrum and intrahistiocytic tachyzoites in the liver and caudal mesenteric lymph node. Disseminated Toxoplasma gondii infection was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and sequencing of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region of formalin-fixed tissues. The lack of baseline information on Florida manatees' exposure to …

PRELIMINARY EVALUATION OF SYMMETRIC DIMETHYLARGININE AS A BIOMARKER OF RENAL INSUFFICIENCY IN WILD AND REHABILITATED FLORIDA MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS LATIROSTRIS).

Currently, there are limited antemortem tests available to evaluate renal function in Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris). Although few reports of renal pathology in manatees exist in the veterinary literature, debilitated animals that present to rehabilitation centers are frequently dehydrated, may have sustained renal trauma secondary to watercraft injury, and may experience ischemic events related to coagulation disorders leading to renal compromise. Clinicians remain limited to the analysis of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine levels, and urinalysis (if urine is obtained) to de…

Fatty acid profiles as a potential lipidomic biomarker of exposure to brevetoxin for endangered Florida manatees (Trichechus manatus latirostris).

Fatty acid signature analysis (FASA) is an important tool by which marine mammal scientists gain insight into foraging ecology. Fatty acid profiles (resulting from FASA) represent a potential biomarker to assess exposure to natural and anthropogenic stressors. Florida manatees are well studied, and an excellent necropsy program provides a basis against which to assess this budding tool. Results using samples from 54 manatees assigned to four cause-of-death categories indicated that those animals exposed to or that died due to brevetoxin exposure (red tide, or RT samples) demonstrate a distinct

Interactions between the imperiled West Indian manatee, Trichechus manatus, and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses), including those vectored by mosquitoes, have recently been cited as potential emerging health threats to marine mammals. Despite the fully aquatic habits of cetaceans, immunologic exposure to arboviruses including West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis virus has been detected in wild Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, and captive orcas have been killed by West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis virus. Currently, there is no evidence of direct interactions between mosquitoes and marine mammals in nature, and it remains unknown how wild cetaceans are

Hysteroscopy and episiotomy in a rescued, cold-stressed Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) for diagnosis and treatment of a retained fetal skeleton.

A rescued female manatee was observed expelling a fetal bone from the vulva. The manatee was anesthetized and diagnosed with uterine retention of a fetal skeleton by ultrasound and hysteroscopy. Episiotomy was performed to gain manual access to the vagina and uterus for removal of the skeleton. Second intention healing of the episiotomy site produced excellent results. Rescued female manatees should receive a thorough reproductive tract evaluation since presence of retained fetal tissues might not be evident in blood or hormone analyses. Retention of a whole or partial dead fetus can be life-t

Cold stress, heart failure, and esophageal occlusion cause the death of a West Indian manatee Trichechus manatus in Alabama, USA.

Cold stress is the leading cause of mortality in West Indian manatees Trichechus manatus in the northcentral Gulf of Mexico. This report describes an adult male manatee that stranded alive with signs of cold stress in Alabama (USA) waters in January 2022 and died during the rescue intervention. Postmortem examination and histopathologic review revealed multiple contributors to death. While the animal had evidence of cold stress syndrome, there was aortic stenosis and concentric left ventricular hypertrophy as well as an esophageal foreign body (plastic bag). Main findings from blood analysis i…

Congenital malformations of the flipper in three West Indian manatees, Trichechus manatus, and a proposed mechanism for development of ectrodactyly and cleft hand in mammals.

Three cases of congenital ectrodactyly of the flipper in the manatee are described, including one case of bilaterally-symmetrical cleft hand. A hypothesis assumes that a defect in the apical ectodermal ridge (AER) in the developing hand plate of the early embryo is the initiating factor in the development of ectrodactylous and cleft hand malformations in man and other mammals. Variations in the site, extent, and time of the AER defect will account for many of the morphologic variations observed in these congenital malformations.

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF TWO SPECIES OF TREMATODE PARASITES OF AMERICAN MANATEES (TRICHECHUS MANATUS) AND THEIR POSSIBLE ROLE AS BIO-INDICATORS OF HOST DISTRIBUTION AND DIET.

Sirenians comprise manatees and dugongs, which host various parasites that cause little or no pathology. Parasitological studies have recommended using Chiorchis spp. as bio-indicators of population distribution. American manatees (Trichechus manatus) live in varied environments (marine, estuarine, fluvial, and lake). However, their relationship to their environment and feeding habits, and thus how it relates to their internal parasites, has yet to be studied. We sought to identify Chiorchis spp. through molecular analysis in manatees from different areas of the Caribbean. A ribosomal RNA 18S …

Metal and metalloid maternal transfer in a newborn West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) two years after the northeastern oil spill disaster of 2019 in Brazil.

A large-scale oil spill along the northeastern Brazilian coast in 2019-2020 severely impacted primary manatee habitats in Brazil. This study aimed to assess metal and metalloid contamination in a dead manatee calf found following this oil spill. Several elements were detected, including chromium, iron, nickel, lead, and vanadium, which are crude oil components, and thallium, a component of dispersants used to degrade and dissipate crude oil. The presence of these contaminants in the manatee calf is indicative of maternal exposure, metabolism, and newborn transference via placenta and lactation

Serum amyloid A (SAA) as a biomarker of chronic infection due to boat strike trauma in a free-ranging Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) with incidental polycystic kidneys.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Middle ear prostheses are among the smallest implanted medical devices, with diameters as small as 0.25 mm. Accurate postoperative imaging is critical for assessing prosthesis placement, detecting complications such as dislodgement or extrusion, and informing potential revisions. Conventional energy-integrating detector CT (EID-CT) is traditionally used for imaging these implants; however, with the recent clinical use of photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT), further analysis on multiple parameters is required to assess future utility. This study compares the spatial res

Manatee calf call contour and acoustic structure varies by species and body size.

Vocal activity and signal characteristics of mammals are driven by several factors that result in both stability and plasticity over multiple time scales. All three extant species of manatee communicate with several calls that are especially important for maintaining contact between cows and calves. Determining if calf calls differ across manatee species will provide insights into the evolution of species-specific acoustic communication traits. We investigated the interspecific differences in the vocalizations of calves of Amazonian manatees (Trichechus inunguis) and the two subspecies of the
