Veterinary parasitology, regional studies and reports2021eng
Tritrichomonas foetus (Trichomonadida, Tritrichomonadidae) is a parasitic protozoan which causes a diarrheic disease in domestic cats worldwide. The epizootiological and pathogenic impact of this parasite in many geographic locations is still to be unraveled; thus, the present study has investigated the occurrence of T. foetus in cats from central Italy, along with the analysis of risk factors and clinical signs. One hundred and five cats referred to the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Teramo were tested with copromicroscopic techniques for common intestinal and ex

Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are an important game species in the USA and have experienced population declines in many areas of their range for >10 yr. Among other hypotheses, increased disease prevalence or novel disease emergence could be contributing factors in Wild Turkey population declines. To address some knowledge gaps and further understand the impacts of two important diseases on Wild Turkey populations, we sought to document the prevalence of histomonosis and lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) in Alabama, USA, and to evaluate the spatial epidemiology of LPDV. We collecte

Pathology and putative virulence factor expression of three Histomonas meleagridis isolates differing in geographic origin, cell passage number (56 or 100), or cell populations grown from a monoculture were compared. Turkey poults inoculated with the high cell passage number isolates or monoculture isolates varied in gross lesion severity and weight gain (P<0.0001). Screening of a published H. meleagridis cDNA library identified forty- eight cysteine proteinases (CP) and one superoxide dismutase (Fe-SOD) proposed to function in either tissue damage and/or invasion and oxidative defense. The Fe

The association of the gut flagellates Mixotricha paradoxa and Deltotrichonympha sp. from the termite Mastotermes darwiniensis with ectobiotic spirochetes and bacterial rods is investigated with light and electron microscopy. Treatment with different chemicals disturbing molecular interactions and use of the freeze-fracture and freeze-etch technique show that hydrophobic interactions and integral membrane proteins seem to be involved in the firm attachment at the contact sites. Application of antibiotics reduces the number of ectobionts and leads to a disintegration of the cortical attachment

The susceptibility of mule and muscovy ducks to "blackhead" disease caused by Histomonas meleagridis was studied, using an experimental intracloacal inoculation. Turkeys were used as controls. Morbidity, mortality and body weight gain were recorded regularly during the experiments. A direct examination of the caecal content was made to determine the absence or presence of the parasite. Gross and microscopic lesions were observed on days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 post infection to evaluate any clinical histomoniosis in ducks and to appraise the histomonad's carriage. A scoring system was developed b

Intestinal health is one of the key factors required for the growth and production of turkeys. Histomoniasis (blackhead disease), caused by a protozoan parasite, Histomonas meleagridis, is a reemerging threat to the turkey industry. Increased incidences of histomoniasis have been reported in recent years due to withdrawal of antihistomonas treatments. H. meleagridis affects ceca and causes cecal inflammation and necrosis. H. meleagridis migrates from ceca to the liver and causes liver necrosis, resulting in high mortalities. Ironically, field outbreaks of histomoniasis are not always associate

Tetratrichomonas gallinarum and Trichomonas gallinae are pathogenic avian parasites that infect a wide range of bird species. The pathologic potential of T. gallinarum is controversial, whereas T. gallinae causes disease in many avian species. Infections are often asymptomatic in doves and pigeons; thus, columbids are presumed to represent the natural hosts for trichomonads. The detection of T. gallinarum and T. gallinae is based on direct microscopic observation or a conventional PCR assay. Microscopy is not very sensitive, and identification of the trichomonads at the genus or species level

Histomonosis, caused by the protozoan parasite Histomonas meleagridis, is a major concern in turkey production due to the lack of licenced drugs and vaccines. Despite various studies on experimental vaccination, the duration of immunity of such a vaccine remains unclear. This study evaluated the long-term efficacy of an attenuated clonal monoxenic H. meleagridis culture in turkeys, focusing on its protective effects. Day-old turkeys were vaccinated orally using a frozen vaccine culture directly, without additional multiplication, and challenged 12 weeks later. The vaccine caused no adverse cli

To compensate the lack of molecular-phylogenetic data on hindgut flagellates in Hungary, galliform birds were monitored in five regions for two years. Samples were collected from 11 turkeys (from 4 flocks) and 9 pheasants (from 3 farm-raised flocks) suspected to have histomonosis. These samples were molecularly and phylogenetically analysed. In nine turkeys, five 18S rRNA genes and two ITS sequence variants of Histomonas meleagridis were identified. These variants were identical between the caecum and liver of the same bird in most cases, but different 18S variants were identified between samp

Pentatrichomonas hominis (P. hominis) has traditionally been regarded as a commensal or opportunistic inhabitant of the intestine. However, a growing number of studies have identified this protozoan as the sole pathogen in cases of intestinal disorders, including diarrhea, in both humans and animals, suggesting it may be a neglected zoonotic pathogen. To investigate the pathogenicity of P. hominis, we here systematically evaluated its effects on healthy immunocompetent BALB/c mice. Our findings revealed that infection with P. hominis induced injury in the large intestine, marked by inflammator

BACKGROUND: Pig breeding is a crucial sector of the global economy, playing a significant role in meat production. However, the prevalence of Trichomonas spp., a group of parasites known to induce diarrhea in various hosts, presents significant challenges in breeding facilities. These parasites pose a substantial threat to the pig breeding industry. Furthermore, despite its prevalence, diagnosing Trichomonas spp. is often challenging, primarily owing to the presence of mixed infections involving different species within clinical samples. To address this concern, we developed a novel isolation

BACKGROUND: Histomonas meleagridis can infect chickens and turkeys. It uses the eggs of the cecal worm Heterakis gallinarum as a vector and reservoir. Litter beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus) and other arthropod species have been implicated as potential vectors, but little information about other arthropod species as potential vectors is known.
METHODS: Four broiler breeder pullet farms were sampled every 4 months. On each farm, three types of traps were set inside and outside two houses. Trapped arthropod specimens were morphologically identified at order level and grouped into families/types

The flagellate parasite Histomonas meleagridis causes a severe disease in turkeys. Since nitarsone, the last antiflagellate feed additive, was withdrawn from the market, H. meleagridis has gained increasing clinical and economic importance, and frequently entire turkey flocks are lost to the disease. Even before the antiflagellate market withdrawal, H. meleagridis has been recognized as a noteworthy disease in commercial turkeys. The aim of this study was to compile and analyze data on histomoniasis outbreaks diagnosed by the California Animal Health and Food Safety System in the years 2000 th

Histomonas meleagridis, a protozoan parasite responsible for histomonosis (syn. Blackhead disease, histomoniasis), presents an increasing challenge for poultry health, particularly with the ban of licensed prophylactic and treatment options. Recent studies have explored H. meleagridis proteome, exoproteome, and surfaceome, linking molecular data to virulence and in vitro attenuation. Nevertheless, proteins involved in interactions with hosts remain largely unknown. In this study, we conducted immunoproteome analyses to identify key antigens involved in the humoral immune response of the parasi

Pentatrichomonas hominis is a zoonotic pathogen with a wide host range, yet epidemiological data in mink and raccoon dogs remain sparse. This study investigates the prevalence of P. hominis in these species by analyzing 498 fecal samples collected from Hebei, Shandong, Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces in China. Results revealed an overall infection rate of 9.64% (48/498, 95% confidence interval 7.19-12.58), with mink showing a 0.36% infection rate (1/276) and raccoon dogs 21.17% (47/222). Female animals had higher infection rates (9.87%, 47/476) than males (4.55%, 1/22). Adults exhi

Wild living birds that are infected with protozoan parasites may pose a risk of transmitting these to domestic fowl. While avian trichomonads are relatively often studied in this context, infection with acanthamoebae was only reported in a few terrestrial bird species. Taken together, the epidemiological role of wetland-associated bird species has been infrequently examined simultaneously for the presence of both groups of the above protozoan parasites. This study was initiated in the southern part of Central Europe, Hungary, to assess the role of waterfowl as carriers of trichomonads and acan

Intestinal protozoan infections such as Eimeria spp. and Histomonas meleagridis remain major challenges to turkey production, leading to impaired feed efficiency, intestinal damage, and mortality. Accurate quantification of intestinal lesions is critical for evaluating disease severity and treatment efficacy; however, traditional lesion scoring systems are subjective and limited in detecting subtle or microscopic tissue changes. This research note introduces the use of Evans Blue Dye (EBD) as an objective, quantitative tool to assess intestinal and hepatic lesions in turkeys experimentally cha

Histomoniasis (blackhead disease) is caused by an anaerobic protozoan, Histomonas meleagridis. The pathogen affects all the gallinaceous birds, while turkeys are highly susceptible. The severity of infection and associated mortality rates of histomoniasis in turkeys vary considerably, and the virulence of H. meleagridis field isolates likely plays a critical role in determining disease outcome. Therefore, characterization of the virulence of field isolates is essential for understanding this disease. The virulence of two H. meleagridis field isolates (HMA and HMB) from the United States was ev

Histomonosis is a parasitic disease of gallinaceous birds characterized by necrotic lesions in cacum and liver that usually turns fatal in turkeys while it is less severe in chickens. Vaccination using in vitro attenuated Histomonas meleagridis has been experimentally shown to confer protection against histomonosis. The protective mechanisms that underpin the vaccine-induced immune response are not resolved so far. Therefore, the actual study aimed to evaluate the location and quantitative distribution patterns of signature cytokines of type 1 [interferon gamma (IFN-γ)] or type 2 [interleukin

A commercial facility producing hamsters with a history of infection by dwarf tapeworm (Hymenolepis nana) submitted 15 animals for necropsy and postmortem parasitological and microscopic examination. No tapeworms were detected grossly or microscopically. Fecal examination including gastrointestinal mucosal smears demonstrated mixed intestinal bacteria and low numbers of Giardia sp. Histologic examination of small intestine demonstrated filling of the small intestinal crypts by large numbers of 7-9 µm × 3 µm, rod to crescent or teardrop-shaped flagellates consistent with Spironucleus sp.
