Urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by Trichosporon are a significant concern for hospitalized patients and those with weakened immune systems. This narrative review study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of UTIs caused by Trichosporon, including its frequency, risk factors, laboratory diagnostic aspects, drug resistance, and the importance of accurate identification in clinical settings. A search of international databases was conducted to identify relevant studies, and it was found that Trichosporon asahii, specifically the G1 type, is the predominant causative agent of UTIs among

Fungal endocarditis of the bioprosthetic heart valve, implanted in a patient without evidence of impaired immunity, is reported. Clinical manifestations of endocarditis appeared 7 years after aortic valve replacement for rheumatic disease and included embolization into the popliteal artery. Trichosporon beigelii was isolated from the cultured fragments of the embolus. Two valve replacements were performed because of recurrent infection during the following 4 years. In spite of prolonged antifungal therapy, the patient died from multiorgan septic involvement.

Trichosporon asahii is a rare opportunistic infection, especially in children, causing a life-threatening fungal infection underlying hematologic malignancies. Predisposing factors for infection with this pathogen are immunodeficiency including underlying malignancy, organ transplantation, extensive burns, human immunodeficiency virus infection, corticosteroid therapy, prosthetic valve surgery, and peritoneal dialysis. In the literature, a breakthrough under caspofungin, micafungin therapy is reported. In this article we report on a 16-year-old patient with Ewing sarcoma who had T. asahii seps

Two cases of oesophageal trichosporonosis due to a suspected nosocomial infection are reported. Both the patients were immunocompetent and had undergone an endoscopic examination on the same day. Six strains of Trichosporon were isolated: three strains from the oesophageal biopsy of the first patient, one strain from the endoscopic forceps, one from the air in the endoscopy room, and one from the oesophageal biopsy of the second patient. The nosocomial nature of the infection and the role of the endoscopic forceps in transporting the micro-organism was suspected, but the morphology and physiol

Trichosporon beigelii is a causative agent of hypersensitivity pneumonia in immunocompetent individuals and of invasive pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. The actual incidence and clinical manifestations of T beigelii pneumonia are obscure because the diagnosis is sometimes difficult. We studied eight patients with T beigelii pneumonia diagnosed by immunohistochemical investigation of lung tissue sections and/or isolation of the organism from the lung, sputum, or blood. All patients had underlying hematologic malignancies for which they had received cytotoxic chemotherapy, resulting in p

Fungal infections always pose a predicament to management and prognosis. The saprophytic fungus, Trichosporon inkin commonly causes endogenous infection in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of exogenous T. inkin endophthalmitis successfully treated with voriconazole, pars plana vitrectomy, and removal of the source of infection. A 51-year-old gentleman with suboptimal control of diabetes presented with a right painful red eye for a week after undergoing an uneventful phacoemulsification with a posterior chamber intraocular lens implant more than a month prior. Cadmium sulphide is one of the most promising materials for solar cells and of great interest due to its useful applications in photonics and electronics, thus the development of bio-mediated synthesis of cadmium sulphide nanoparticles (CdS NPs) is one of the essential areas in nanoparticles. The present study demonstrates for the first time the eco-friendly biosynthesis of CdS NPs using the yeast Trichosporon jirovecii. The biosynthesis of CdS NPs were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrum and characterized by X-ray diffraction assay and electron microscopy. Scanning and transmission electron microsco

White Piedra is a superficial mycoses characterized by nodules on the hair shaft, caused by the basidiomycetous yeast Trichosporon species. In this study 25 essential oils were extracted and screened against two Trichosporon species i.e. Trichosporon asahii and Trichosporon cutaneum. Both these fungi procured from MTCC Chandigarh were maintained on yeast malt agar plates and tubes at 25 degrees C. Two screening methods viz., agar well diffusion assay and minimum inhibitory concentration were adopted for the study. The results showed that the maximum anti-yeast activity against T. asahii and T.

Two hundred and eight isolates of Trichosporon beigelii were identified over the period January 1973 to July 1983. 45.7% of these were from skin, 25.0% from nail, 22.6% from tissues and fluids, 3.4% from hair and 3.4% from sputum. Tr. beigelii was isolated in association with a recognized pathogen in 23 cases, 9 with a yeast, 14 with a dermatophyte. In 38 cases, Tr. beigelii was the only organism isolated when direct microscopic examination of clinical material showed the presence of hyphae and/or yeast cells. Although Tr. beigelii could only be assigned a definite pathogenic role in 6 cases o

Trichosporon spp. are ubiquitous basidiomycetous yeast-like fungi, widely distributed in the environment and commonly found in the skin and gastrointestinal microbiota. Trichosporon asahii is the most frequently implicated species in invasive trichosporonosis, usually followed by Trichosporon inkin. In recent years, the incidence of invasive fungal diseases (IFD) caused by rare yeasts of Trichosporon species has increased, predominantly affecting immunocompromised patients. Since the late 1990s, several cases of IFD due to Trichosporon inkin sensu lato were reported in European hospitals (Fran

Trichosporon species are the causative agents of superficial skin infections, such as white piedra. Immunocompromised hosts, particularly those with underlying hematological malignancy, are at risk of developing invasive infection, which usually progresses to disseminated life-threatening disease. Peritonitis caused by Trichosporon has been described in end-stage renal disease patients treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. Here, we report on a Trichosporon infection of an arteriovenous graft in a patient on chronic hemodialysis. The infection was successfully treated with flu

Patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation are profoundly immunosuppressed as a result of their intensive myeloablative chemotherapy and are at high risk for opportunistic fungal infections mainly caused by Candida spp and Aspergillus spp. Trichosporon beigelii (T beigelii) has emerged as a life-threatening opportunistic pathogen in granulocytopenic and immunocompromised hosts and there is a marked increase in cases reported in the literature. Response to antifungal agents is poor, mortality is high and immunological recovery is the most important factor for a favorable outcome in patient

During the period April, 1985 to March, 1986, Trichosporon beigelii was isolated from the urine of 15 intensive care unit patients. All of these patients had Foley catheters in place at the time of T beigelii isolation. None of them had urinary tract infections on admission, and it was initially felt that this organism was a source of infection in these critically ill individuals. Subsequent investigation revealed this to be a pseudoepidemic secondary to contamination of the urinary catheter drainage system. Urine obtained by gravity drainage from the outlet port of urimeters yielded growth of

BACKGROUND: Trichosporon asahii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen increasingly recognized in immunocompromised patients, including children. Although rare, T. asahii fungemia carries significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in those with hematologic malignancies or prolonged immunosuppression.
OBJECTIVES: This case series aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, risk factors, microbiological profiles, and treatment outcomes of pediatric patients diagnosed with T. asahii fungemia over a 13-year period at a tertiary care children's hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective review wa

BACKGROUND: Several outbreaks of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection associated with a specific model of fiberoptic bronchoscope have been reported. In a 3-week period in September 2000, we noticed an increased number of Trichosporon mucoides isolates recovered from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens collected at our hospital. We investigated the circumstances surrounding these isolates.
METHODS: Outbreak investigation was conducted, and the medical records of the affected patients were reviewed retrospectively for evidence of positive cultures for T. mucoides from BAL specimens. Specimens c

A case of disseminated Trichosporon beigelii infection is reported. Trichosporon inhabits the soil, but may also be present in the human skin and mouth as a normal flora. Occasionally it causes superficial mycotic infection, but it is rarely invasive. A review of literature disclosed 21 reported cases of invasive Trichosporon beigelii infection, to date. Of these, two cases were from Japan. The scarcity of reports on this invasive infection may be due to a lack of awareness of the organism. Histologically, it should be carefully differentiated from Candida.

INTRODUCTION: Cases of invasive Trichosporon infections have increasingly emerged; it is now the second leading cause of yeast bloodstream infections after Candida spp., particularly in the immunosuppressed population, where it often causes breakthrough fungemia with high mortality.
METHODS: We present a case report of a breakthrough Trichosporon asahii infection in a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and review all of the cases of breakthrough Trichosporon spp. infections published in the literature to date.
RESULTS: We extracted 68 cases of breakthrough Trichosporon spp. infections, wher
