Use of the Micro-Agar Larval Development Test to Differentiate Resistant and Susceptible Cooperia spp. Isolates in Cattle Within the Context of Parasite Population Replacement.

Gastrointestinal nematode infections are a global concern in grazing cattle production systems, even more so due to the widespread problem of anthelmintic resistance. In response, early anthelmintic resistance detection methods, such as the micro-agar larval development test (MALDT), and parasite management strategies, such as the replacement of resistant parasite populations with susceptible ones, have been developed. This study aimed to characterize ivermectin-susceptible and -resistant isolates of Cooperia spp. using MALDT in the context of a parasite population replacement strategy. Three

New species of the genus Alippistrongylus (Nematoda: Trichostrongylina) parasitic in Delomys dorsalis (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) in the Atlantic Forest of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

We describe a new species of the genus Alippistrongylus (Nematoda: Trichostrongylina) in the small intestine of Delomys dorsalis (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) found in Itatiaia National Park (Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, PNI), state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The new species can be distinguished between the other two species previously described by the following morphological characteristics: pattern of the rays from the caudal bursa rays in males and the spherical-shaped appendage in the female. Additionally, we provide molecular genetic data from the new species. The discovery of Alippistrongylu

Infection with the sheep gastrointestinal nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta increases luminal pathobionts.

BACKGROUND: The multifaceted interactions between gastrointestinal (GI) helminth parasites, host gut microbiota and immune system are emerging as a key area of research within the field of host-parasite relationships. In spite of the plethora of data available on the impact that GI helminths exert on the composition of the gut microflora, whether alterations of microbial profiles are caused by direct parasite-bacteria interactions or, indirectly, by alterations of the GI environment (e.g. mucosal immunity) remains to be determined. Furthermore, no data is thus far available on the downstream r

Systematics of gastrointestinal nematodes of domestic ruminants: advances between 1992 and 1995 and proposals for future research.

The systematics of trichostrongyloid nematodes of ruminants provides a foundation for diagnostics and responds to the need to identify eggs in feces, free-living larvae from pastures or fecal cultures and larval or adult nematodes collected from hosts. These needs are associated with diagnostic problems or research projects. Difficulties in identifying all developmental stages of trichostrongyloid nematodes of domestic ruminants still severely limit the effective diagnosis and control of these parasites. Phylogenetic hypotheses as the basis for predictive classifications have been developed on

Arrested development of gastrointestinal trichostrongylids in goats in Nigeria.

Arrested development of Haemonchus, Cooperia and Trichostrongylus spp. was studied in (1) 14 naturally infected and eight experimentally infected West African Dwarf (WAD) goats reared in the derived savanna zone of eastern Nigeria and (2) 55 naturally infected slaughter goats obtained from the savanna and sahel regions of northern Nigeria. Six of the WAD goats carried natural infections of H. contortus and T. colubriformis and eight other (tracer) goats acquired their infections from a grass paddock artificially contaminated with H. placei, C. pectinata and C. punctata, during May to October.

Dung beetle activity and the development of trichostrongylid eggs into infective larvae in cattle faeces.

In the perspective to reduce the use of antiparasitic drugs, any interaction between the processes that control the development of parasite eggs into infective larval stages (L3) in dung and the activities of different dung-breeding organisms becomes of interest. The objective of the present study was to determine whether dung beetle activity affected the development of parasite larvae in cattle dung. Faeces containing eggs of parasites (predominantly Cooperia spp.) were pooled according to high (250-600 epg) or low (approx. 100 epg) egg counts. Experimental dung pats were formed for each cate

Molecular evidence of potential albendazole-resistance in Teladorsagia circumcincta in Iraqi sheep.

Gastrointestinal nematodes infection is one of the major health problems in the livestock industry in many parts of the world and Iraq. Anthelmintic drugs are heavily relied upon to control them so that repeated use lead to development of anthelmintic resistance. The present study was carried out to detect the albendazole-resistance in Teladorsagia circumcincta from Iraqi sheep in Soran district, Kurdistan Region. A total of 140 sheep abomasa were randomly collected. Allele-specific PCR (ASP) was used to investigate the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in codon 200 of isotyp

Phytochemical analysis and anthelmintic activity of Combretum mucronatum leaf extract against infective larvae of soil-transmitted helminths including ruminant gastrointestinal nematodes.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infect more than a quarter of the world's human population. In the absence of vaccines for most animal and human gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN), treatment of infections primarily relies on anthelmintic drugs, while resistance is a growing threat. Therefore, there is a need to find alternatives to current anthelmintic drugs, especially those with novel modes of action. The present work aimed to study the composition and anthelmintic activity of Combretum mucronatum leaf extract (CMLE) by phytochemical analysis and larval migration inhibition assays

An improved model for the population dynamics of cattle gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture: parameterisation and field validation for Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in northern temperate zones.

Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are amongst the most important pathogens of grazing ruminants worldwide, resulting in negative impacts on cattle health and production. The dynamics of infection are driven in large part by the influence of climate and weather on free-living stages on pasture, and computer models have been developed to predict infective larval abundance and guide management strategies. Significant uncertainties around key model parameters limits effective application of these models to GIN in cattle, however, and these parameters are difficult to estimate in natural populations

Taxonomic revision of the Nippostrongylinae (Nematoda, Heligmonellidae) parasites of Muridae from the Australasian region. The genus Odilia Durette-Desset, 1973.

The species of the genus Odilia Durette-Desset, 1973 (Heligmonellidae, Nippostrongylinae) are re-distributed among eight genera of which five are new. This classification is mainly based on certain characters of the synlophe not previously taken into account at the supraspecific level. These characters mainly include the presence or absence of a careen, the relative size of the ridges forming the careen, the development and position of ridge 1', the development of the left ridge and right ridge, and the distribution of the largest ridges. Eighteen of the 20 known species are rearranged in the

Gastric Ollulanus tricuspis infection identified in captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) with chronic vomiting.

Gastritis, vomition and weight loss are common in captive cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus). Gastric spiral bacteria (Helicobacter spp.) and the very small, viviparous nematode Ollulanus tricuspis, a stomach worm of cats, are believed to be important causes. Three sibling cheetahs at Wellington Zoo, New Zealand, developed chronic vomiting, diarrhoea and debility. Their parents were both South African-born. Response to antibacterial treatment was poor. Endoscopic examinations revealed chronic lymphoplasmacytic gastritis and Ollulanus infection. Treatment with oxfendazole and pyrantel embonate resulte

Host immunity, nutrition and coinfection alter longitudinal infection patterns of schistosomes in a free ranging African buffalo population.

Schistosomes are trematode parasites of global importance, causing infections in millions of people, livestock, and wildlife. Most studies on schistosomiasis, involve human subjects; as such, there is a paucity of longitudinal studies investigating parasite dynamics in the absence of intervention. As a consequence, despite decades of research on schistosomiasis, our understanding of its ecology in natural host populations is centered around how environmental exposure and acquired immunity influence acquisition of parasites, while very little is known about the influence of host physiology, coi

Multispecies helminth parasitism of grazing dairy cows in Germany and Austria, examined in the housing period.

Helminth composition and burden data for dairy cows have not been reported for >40 years for Germany and even less information is available for Austria. In the context of two recent studies, helminth parasitism was studied in 32 cows (23 from six farms in Bavaria and Tyrol; 9 from one farm in Saxony) from pasture-based dairy farms necropsied during the housing period. Helminths were enumerated and identified based on morphological characters (all helminths but rumen flukes) or molecular techniques (rumen flukes). Thirteen species of gastrointestinal nematodes and two species each of liver fluk

Abomasal dysfunction and cellular and mucin changes during infection of sheep with larval or adult Teladorsagia circumcincta.

This is the first integrated study of the effects on gastric secretion, inflammation and fundic mucins after infection with L3 T. circumcincta and in the very early period following transplantation of adult worms. At 3 months-of-age, 20 Coopworth lambs were infected intraruminally with 35,000 L3; infected animals were killed on Days 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 post-infection and 6 controls on either Day 0 or 30 post-infection. Another 15 Romney cross lambs received 10,000 adult worms at 4-5 months-of-age though surgically-implanted abomasal cannulae and were killed after 6, 12, 24 and 72 hours; uninf

Faecal dry matter, inflammatory cells and antibodies in parasite-resistant sheep challenged with either Trichostrongylus colubriformis or Teladorsagia circumcincta.

Sheep that are highly resistant to parasitic nematodes can suffer bad diarrhoea due to the inflammation associated with rejection of ingested larvae from pasture. We hypothesised that challenging parasite-resistant sheep indoors with nematode larvae would result in reduced faecal dry matter, and that faecal dry matter would be lowest in sheep challenged with a mixture of Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta compared to those challenged with either species alone. We also hypothesised that inflammatory cells and serum antibodies and interleukin-5 would be highest in those
