A redescription of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 (Acari: Laelapidae), from Trichosurus cunninghami (Marsupialia: Phalangeridae) from southern Australia.

The adults of Trichosurolaelaps dixous Domrow, 1972 are redescribed from a population of Trichosurus cunninghami Lindenmayer, Dubach et Viggers, 2002 in south-eastern Australia. The nymphal stages are described for the first time. Morphologically, T. dixous is similar to Trichosurolaelaps crassipes Womersley, 1956. Morphological differences between the prefemale deutonymphs and adult females of the two mite species are the presence of a single large ventral spur on tibia I of T. dixous. Males of T. dixous could not be distinguished from T. crassipes morphologically and the idiosomal length of

Plasma growth hormone and growth hormone-binding protein during development in the marsupial brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula).

Plasma concentrations of growth hormone (GH) were measured in the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) pouch young from 25 through to 198 days post-partum (n=71). GH concentrations were highest early in pouch life (around 100 ng/ml), and thereafter declined in an exponential fashion to reach adult concentrations (10.8+/-1.8 ng/ml; n=21) by approximately 121-145 days post-partum, one to two months before the young is weaned. Growth hormone-binding protein (GHBP), which has been shown to modify the cellular actions of GH in eutherian mammals, was identified for the first time in a marsupial.

Sperm transport in the female reproductive tract of the brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, following superovulation and artificial insemination.

This study investigated sperm transport following superovulation and artificial insemination (AI) in the common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula. Females were superovulated by treatment with 15 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin (PMSG) then 4 mg luteinizing hormone (LH) 78 h later. Inseminations were performed 27 h after LH (4 million motile spermatozoa/uterus). At 1.5, 3, 6, 9 and 12 h after AI (n=5 per group), females were euthanised and reproductive tracts removed for examination and flushed for sperm. No ovulations had occurred by 1.5 h, but 20% of animals had ovulated by 3 or 6 h

Bacterial ghosts as a delivery system for zona pellucida-2 fertility control vaccines for brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula).

The introduced brushtail possum is a serious pest in New Zealand and there is much interest in the development of an immunocontraceptive vaccine for population control. Immunisation of female possums against recombinant possum zona pellucida protein-2 (ZP2) is known to reduce embryo production by 72-75% but successful development of fertility control will depend on a delivery system that is effective for field use. Bacterial ghost vaccine technology is a promising system to formulate a non-living vaccine for bait or aerosol delivery. The N-terminal (amino acid residues 41-316, ZP2N) and C-term

Molecular and functional characterization of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator from the Australian common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula.

Unlike eutherian mammals, the colon of the Australian common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, a metatherian mammal, is incapable of electrogenic Cl(-) secretion and has elevated levels of electrogenic Na(+) absorption, while the ileum secretes HCO (3) (-) rather than Cl(-). In eutherian mammals, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is essential for both Cl(-) and HCO (3) (-) secretion and the regulation of Na(+) absorption. Therefore, we have sequenced possum (p)CFTR, described its distribution and characterized the properties of cloned pCFTR expressed in Fisc

Increased protection against bovine tuberculosis in the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) when BCG is administered with killed Mycobacterium vaccae.

SETTING: The Australian brushtail possum is the major wildlife reservoir for Mycobacterium bovis infection in New Zealand. Development of an effective tuberculosis vaccine for possums will reduce the spread of infection to cattle and farmed deer. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether killed M. vaccae can improve the efficacy of vaccination with M. bovis bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) against bovine tuberculosis in the possum. DESIGN: Groups of possums (n=6-8) were vaccinated via intranasal and intraconjunctival routes with BCG alone or BCG in combination with heat-killed M. vaccae. Controls were

Field Trial of an Aerially-Distributed Tuberculosis Vaccine in a Low-Density Wildlife Population of Brushtail Possums (Trichosurus vulpecula).

Oral-delivery Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine in a lipid matrix has been shown to confer protection against M. bovis infection and reduce the severity of tuberculosis (TB) when fed to brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), the major wildlife vector of bovine TB in New Zealand. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of aerial delivery of this live vaccine in bait form to an M. bovis-infected wild possum population, and subsequently assess vaccine uptake and field efficacy. Pre-trial studies indicated a resident possum population at very low density (<0.6 possums/ha)

Ontogeny and pathway of formation of 5alpha-androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol in the testes of the immature brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula.

The testicular androgen 5alpha;-androstane-3alpha,17beta-diol (androstanediol) mediates virilisation in pouch young of a marsupial, the tammar wallaby, and is the principal androgen formed in immature rodent testes. To chart the pattern of androstanediol formation in another marsupial species, the testes or fragments of testes from brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) that spanned the age range from early pouch young to mature adults were incubated with (3)H-progesterone and the products were identified by high-performance liquid chromatography. The only 19-carbon steroids identified in p

Ultrastructural observations on in vivo fertilisation in the brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, following PMSG/LH superovulation and artificial insemination.

Information on the dynamics of gamete interaction in marsupials is very limited and not available for any species from the major Australian Order Diprotodontia which includes most of the more familiar animals such as kangaroos, possums and the koala. This study addressed this deficiency by examining the ultrastructure of in vivo fertilised eggs from common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). Females were superovulated by treatment with 15 IU PMSG and then 4 mg porcine LH 3 days later, and inseminations were performed 910-13 h after LH) using epididymal spermatozoa. Between 33 and 39 h a

The distribution of organised lymphoid tissue in the alimentary tracts of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and possums (Trichosurus vulpecula and Pseudocheirus peregrinus).

The anatomical arrangement of organised lymphoid tissues of the alimentary tract for 3 Australian marsupials, the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula and the common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), was determined by gross dissection and acetic acid treatment. Oropharyngeal tonsils were consistently found in the dorsolateral wall of the caudal oropharynx in all 3 species and additionally in the ventral soft palate of the koala. Aggregated lymphoid nodules (Peyer's patches) were present in the small intestine of koalas, ringtail possums a

Vaccination of the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) against Mycobacterium bovis infection with bacille Calmette-Guérin: the response to multiple doses.

In New Zealand, the brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) is the principal wildlife vector of bovine tuberculosis. Control of infected possum populations contributes to the control of tuberculosis in domestic livestock. Vaccination is potentially a complementary strategy to population control, but to be cost-effective, administration of the vaccine to possums would need to be from an appropriately designed automatic vaccinator. Possums themselves would activate the vaccinator so that it would deliver an aerosol spray of vaccine. There would be no direct way to prevent possums receiving mult

In vitro hepatic metabolism of mefloquine using microsomes from cats, dogs and the common brush-tailed possum (Trichosurus vulpecula).

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a systemic, fatal, viral-induced, immune-mediated disease of cats caused by feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). Mefloquine, a human anti-malarial agent, has been shown to inhibit FIPV in vitro. As a first step to evaluate its efficacy and safety profile as a potential FIP treatment for cats, mefloquine underwent incubation in feline, canine and common brush-tailed possum microsomes and phase I metabolism cofactors to determine its rate of phase I depletion. Tramadol was used as a phase I positive control as it undergoes this reaction in both dogs

Infection of naïve, free-living brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) with the nematode parasite Parastrongyloides trichosuri and its subsequent spread.

Despite the importance of spatial processes in host-parasite interactions, parasite dispersal has been the subject of few experimental studies. Introduced marsupial common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) are a major environmental and agricultural pest in New Zealand. Parastrongyloides trichosuri, an intestinal rhabdiasoid nematode parasite specific to possums, is being evaluated as a self-disseminating delivery system for engineered fertility control vaccines. This study addressed whether an artificial infection could be established in a naïve, free-living possum population, by measu

Electrogenic ion transport in the intestine of the Australian common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula: indications of novel transport patterns in a marsupial.

In this study, electrogenic ion transport in the intestine of the Australian common brushtail possum, Trichosurus vulpecula was investigated. In the ileum, a Na(+)-dependent, phloridzin- and amiloride-insensitive short-circuit current ( Isc) was present. Mucosal glucose stimulated a further phloridzin-sensitive, dose-dependent increase in Isc. A Na(+)-dependent, ouabain-sensitive Isc was also present in the caecum and colon. In the proximal and distal colon, amiloride (100 micro mol l(-1), mucosal) inhibited this Isc by 81+/-4% and 65+/-3%, respectively and the Ki for amiloride (approximately
