Clinical, echo-Doppler, and pathologic data of a rare case of tricuspid atresia in association with truncus arteriosus are presented. There are only six patients (including the patient reported here) with this anomaly in whom detailed pathologic and/or clinical descriptions are available in the literature. An additional six cases were mentioned in the literature but without any details. A prevalence rate of 1.4% among tricuspid atresia cases is estimated. All infants presented with symptoms of cyanosis and/or congestive heart failure within a few days to 2 months after birth and died shortly t

We have described a patient who had a cyanotic congenital heart disease (type Ib tricuspid atresia), with initial palliation accomplished in childhood via a Glenn procedure. In 1985, she had a Fontan repair with the Bjork modification; 3 years later she achieved her first pregnancy at age 27. Maternal Doppler echocardiography in early pregnancy showed good flow through the constructed conduit, with normal left ventricular size and function. Fetal echocardiography at 22 weeks' gestation via two-dimensional, M-mode, pulsed Doppler, and color flow mapping revealed no evidence of fetal cardiac dis

The clinical profile and course of 101 patients with tricuspid atresia seen at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston, were reviewed; the electrocardiograms, hemodynamic data, associated anomalies, complications of the malformation and surgical results were outlined and a definition of anatomic types and radiologic groups formed in order to facilitate therapeutic decisions. Overall survival to 15 years of age was approximately 50 percent. Tricuspid atresia type 1 (normally related great arteries), group A (decreased pulmonary vascularity) was the most frequent category (54 percent); wi

Two cases of pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and severe tricuspid stenosis are described in which the initial angiographic diagnosis was tricuspid atresia and pulmonary atresia. Two dimensional echocardiography showed the features of an imperforate tricuspid valve because in each case contrast echocardiography failed to show anterograde flow from the right atrium to right ventricle. Successful radical surgical repair was achieved in one patient with performing a tricuspid valvotomy and inserting an external valved conduit between the hypoplastic right ventricle and the main pu

The present report describes the clinical and angio-cardiographic features of 23 cases of tricuspid atresia. Nineteen patients had type I anatomy, 2 patients had type II anatomy and 2 patients had type III anatomy. In addition to the standard features, there were some uncommon associations observed. These included double outlet right ventricle, double outlet left ventricle, single coronary artery, complete heart block, right axis deviation, ostium primum atrial septal defect and coarctation of the aorta.

Tricuspid atresia with unroofed coronary sinus is an extremely rare cardiac anomaly. A 15-year-old boy who was successfully operated was suspected this disease preoperatively. We speculated this disease by right atrial angiography and underwent the direct suture closure of a coronary sinus defect and Fontan's operation. When we perform Fontan's operation on tricuspid atresia, we should take the existence of unroofed coronary sinus into our consideration. The echocardiography, cardiac catheterization and angiography, especially, right atrial angiography had to be carried out preoperatively. Dur

Nineteen patients with tricuspid atresia and reduced lung perfusion (valvular-and/or subvalvular pulmonary stenosis, transposition of the great arteries and/or single atrium) were operated in the period 1975--1979. The surgical procedures employed varied according to the additional cardiac defects. The age of the patients was between 2 and 18 years. Eleven children received a contuit with a Hancock valve, 8 children a valveless conduit. In 9 patients it was possible to connect the conduit to the right ventricle using the pumping action of the right ventricle with an anatomically intact pulmona

This is a report on the anatomical characteristics of 17 cases of tricuspid atresia. Three of these cases had a discrepancy between the type of bulboventricular loop (dextro) and the position of the great arteries (the aorta being to the left of the pulmonary artery). In these a characteristic type of ventricular septal defect, located just beneath the tissue of the semilunar valves was found. In 3 cases with cardiac dextroversion and juxtaposition of the atrial appendages the great arteries were on the same frontal plane and there was a separation between the semilunar and the anterior mitral

Tricuspid atresia and common truncus arteriosus are rare forms of congenital heart disease; the coexistence of both anomalies is therefore an extremely uncommon event. Without treatment, early mortality is the natural course so diagnostic and therapeutic management must be performed without delay. We report a case of a newborn with a postnatal diagnosis of coexistent tricuspid atresia and common arterial trunk in whom successful palliation was performed using a staged surgical approach.

In an anatomic study of 21 cases of pulmonary atresia with tricuspid insufficiency (pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, type II), the morphologic features of the tricuspid valve and the right ventricle were found to differ greatly from those seen in pulmonary atresia with tricuspid stenosis (pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum, type I). Morphologically, pulmonary atresia with tricuspid insufficiency (type II) has a greater resemblance to Ebstein's disease with pulmonary atresia than to type I pulmonary atresia. The anomaly may be more amenable to surgery than pulmona

Tricuspid atresia is a rare cyanotic congenital heart disease that impairs oxygenation. A 16-month-old female child from a rural area in Nepal presented with shortness of breath, cyanosis of the lips and extremities, feeding difficulties, and severe acute malnutrition. The patient had been diagnosed with cyanotic congenital heart disease at nine months but had sought treatment from shamans due to financial constraints. Diagnostic echocardiography at the referred center revealed tricuspid atresia type IB with a ventricular septal defect. While awaiting surgery, the child collapsed and was reviv

Tricuspid atresia (TA) is a rare congenital heart condition that presents with a complete absence of the right atrioventricular valve. Because of the rarity of familial and/or isolated cases of TA, little is known about the potential genetic abnormalities contributing to this condition. Potential responsible chromosomal abnormalities were identified in exploratory studies and include deletions in 22q11, 4q31, 8p23, and 3p as well as trisomies 13 and 18. In parallel, potential culprit genes include the ZFPM2, HEY2, NFATC1, NKX2-5, MYH6, and KLF13 genes. The aim of this chapter is to expose the

We present a case of a fetal diagnosis of tricuspid atresia (TA). The pregnant woman and her husband requested that the baby be treated with only palliative care. The cardiologist did not think it would be appropriate to withhold life-prolonging surgery once the infant was born. The neonatologist argued that outcomes for TA are similar to those for hypoplastic left heart syndrome, and the standard practice at the institution was to allow parents to choose surgery or end-of-life care for those infants. The team requested an ethics consultation to assist in determining whether forgoing life-prol

Six children aged 7-11 years were operated in the Paediatric Cardio-centre in Prague Motol in 1965-1987 on account of atresia of the tricuspid valve. Fontan's operation in Doty's modification was performed which involves the establishment of a wide direct connection between the right atrium and the pulmonary artery without the use of valves or a conduit. The authors describe the technique of the operation and indication criteria which must be met, if the operation is to be successful. Fontan's operation is useful also in other types of complex heart disease with a single ventricle and low pulm

We present our experience in the management of tricuspid atresia in 115 children. The anatomic data are categorized as follows: type I, 83.5%, type II, 16.5%. Type IB is the most frequent, representing 63.5% of all the cases. Each patient was operated upon one to four times. The age at first operation ranged from 10 days to 20 years. The first operation was a shunt in 94 children, a Fontan operation in four, and banding of the pulmonary artery in 17. Hospital mortality for the first operation was 12.2%, significantly higher in children under 6 months and in those having Waterston shunts. Potts

In tricuspid atresia, an obligatory right to left shunt occurs at the atrial level. We have observed several patients with left to right interatrial shunts. Data from cardiac catheterisation in 40 consecutive patients were reviewed to determine the frequency and mechanism of left to right shunting in tricuspid atresia. An increase of 6% or more in oxygen saturation between the superior vena cava and the right atrium in two or more sets of saturations, representing a left to right shunt, was present in 29 out of 50 (58%) catheterisations in which the data were adequate. In most, the shunt was a
