The efficacy of acupressure in relieving pain has been documented; however, its effectiveness for chronic headache compared to the muscle relaxant medication has not yet been elucidated. To address this, a randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted in a medical center in Southern Taiwan in 2003. Twenty-eight patients suffering chronic headache were randomly assigned to the acupressure group (n = 14) or the muscle relaxant medication group (n = 14). Outcome measures regarding self-appraised pain scores (measured on a visual analogue scale; VAS) and ratings of how headaches affected lif

Present pain models for tension-type headache suggest that nociceptive inputs from peripheral tender muscles can lead to central sensitization and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) conditions. Such models support that possible peripheral mechanisms leading to pericranial tenderness include activation or sensitization of nociceptive nerve endings by liberation of chemical mediators (bradikinin, serotonin, substance P). However, a study has found that non-specific tender points in CTTH subjects were not responsible for liberation of algogenic substances in the periphery. Assuming that liberat

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a widespread musculoskeletal disorder characterized by myofascial trigger points. Needling trigger points is one of the most common therapeutic interventions to treat MPS. However, it is unclear whether needling trigger points is superior to other non-pharmacological interventions.
METHODS: Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) which compared the effectiveness of needling trigger points and other non-pharmacological therapies for treating MPS, were searched in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, WanFang, VPCS, and

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonographic evaluation of trigger points detected by physical examination in patients with myofascial pain syndrome is being used more frequently in clinical care. However, the sonographic appearance of trigger points, in association with pain and disability, has not been adequately described.
OBJECTIVE: To reveal the presence of trigger points with ultrasonography in those with myofascial pain syndrome and to determine if ultrasound images can help discriminate between demographic and disease characteristics.
METHODS: Fifty-two participants with chronic neck pain (NP) were

BACKGROUND: Extreme heat is a public health challenge. The scarcity of directly comparable studies on the association of heat with morbidity and mortality and the inconsistent identification of threshold temperatures for severe impacts hampers the development of comprehensive strategies aimed at reducing adverse heat-health events.
OBJECTIVES: This quantitative study was designed to link temperature with mortality and morbidity events in Maricopa County, Arizona, USA, with a focus on the summer season.
METHODS: Using Poisson regression models that controlled for temporal confounders, we asse

Neurolysis with alcohol has been rarely used in gynecology. We describe a case of deep dyspareunia caused by trigger points in the uterosacral stumps that was successfully treated using alcohol neurolysis. We highlight the risk of voiding dysfunction after uterosacral neurolysis and recommend a 2-step procedure with unilateral injection of alcohol, 1 side at a time at an interval of 2 to 3 months.

BACKGROUND: Larsen syndrome is an extremely rare congenital disorder characterized by craniofacial anomalies and multiple skeletal deformities such as short stature, kyphoscoliosis of the spine, cervical spine instability, clubfeet, and joint dislocations especially of the knee and hip joints. Musculoskeletal pain in a case of Larsen syndrome signals red flags as these patients have various congenital anomalies. However, myofascial trigger points could be a cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain in these patients. Myofascial trigger points are easy to diagnose and treat.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the ERK signaling pathway was involved in ameliorating chronic myofascial hyperalgesia from contused gastrocnemius muscle in rats. We established an animal model associated with myofascial pain syndrome and described the mechanism of muscle pain in an animal model. Changes in the mechanical pain threshold were observed 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 18, and 24 h after ERK inhibitor injection around myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) of the gastrocnemius muscle in rats. Morphological changes in gastrocnemius muscle cells were observed by hematoxyl

BACKGROUND: Patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) often complain of prominent pain in shoulder and arm, also there are patients that have pain in their shoulder and arm which is due to myofascial trigger point (MTP) located in their upper trapezius muscle. Despite the frequency of this observation, few studies have previously sought to establish possible relationship between the CTS and MTP in shoulder area.
METHODS: Samples were 160 patients (221 hands) consist of 130 females and 30 males, with suspected diagnosis of CTS, from March 2008 to October 2008. In this study after performing e

Among the various methods of application techniques in low level laser therapy (LLLT) (HeNe 632.8 nm visible red or infrared 820-830 nm continuous wave and 904 nm pulsed emission) there are very promising "trigger points" (TPs), i.e., myofascial zones of particular sensibility and of highest projection of focal pain points, due to ischemic conditions. The effect of LLLT and the results obtained after clinical treatment of more than 200 patients (headaches and facial pain, skeletomuscular ailments, myogenic neck pain, shoulder and arm pain, epicondylitis humery, tenosynovitis, low back and radi

OBJECTIVE: The present study is to investigate the characteristic distribution of primary pain points and referred pain areas in patients with knee-joint pain diseases, therefore revealing the correlation between the myofascial trigger point and acupoint sensitization.
METHODS: A total of 483 patients (320 men and 163 women, 36 to 72 years in age) with knee-joint pain recruited from 4 clinical centers were observed from July, 2017 to April, 2019 in the present study. The areas of primary and referred pain in these patients were detected by thumb-pressing and marked on human anatomic atlas.
