Viral Diversity of Tick Species Parasitizing Cattle and Dogs in Trinidad and Tobago.

Ticks are vectors of a wide variety of pathogens that are implicated in mild to severe disease in humans and other animals. Nonetheless, the full range of tick-borne pathogens is unknown. Viruses, in particular, have been neglected in discovery efforts targeting tick-borne agents. High throughput sequencing was used to characterize the virome of 638 ticks, including Rhipicephalus microplus (n = 320), Rhipicephalus sanguineus (n = 300), and Amblyomma ovale (n = 18) collected throughout Trinidad and Tobago in 2017 and 2018. Sequences representing nine viruses were identified, including five nove

Association of ALDH1 promoter polymorphisms with alcohol-related phenotypes in Trinidad and Tobago.

OBJECTIVE: Two polymorphisms in the promoter region of the gene encoding cytosolic aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH1A1), ALDH1A1*2 and ALDH1A1*3, have recently been identified. The present study sought to determine whether an association exists between ALDH1A1 genotypes, alcohol dependence, drinking history, and liver function tests in the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago (TT). METHOD: The participants in this study were 137 alcohol dependents of either East Indian ancestry (Indo-TT) or African ancestry (Afro-TT) and 108 controls matched by age, gender, and ethnicity. The psychosocial experiences of women diagnosed with PMOS in Trinidad and Tobago: a qualitative inquiry.

Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is a globally prevalent endocrine disorder affecting reproductive-aged women and associated with numerous long-term health risks. While growing international research on PMOS examines both medical and non-medical aspects of this condition, few studies exist within the Caribbean region, mostly focused on the clinical aspects. Thus, the current study explores the possible psychosocial impacts of women diagnosed with PMOS in Trinidad and Tobago. A qualitative study was conducted with 24 women aged 18-45 years with a physician-confirmed PMOS diagnosi

Phylogeographical and molecular characterization of an emerging Mycobacterium tuberculosis clone in Trinidad and Tobago.

We report on a fine molecular and phylogenetical characterization of circulating Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains isolated from patients during a 1-year period in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T). The spoligotyping data coupled to minisatellite typing and available epidemiological data showed that a single major clone of "evolutionary modern" tubercle bacilli (SIT566) was responsible for more than half of the tuberculosis (TB) cases. It preferentially infected younger age groups (mean 39.1 years versus 47.7 years for other genotypes, p<0.0005), and was overrepresented in Port-of-Spain (1 out of 3 p

Sight impairment registration in Trinidad: trend in causes and population coverage in comparison to the National Eye Survey of Trinidad and Tobago.

BACKGROUND: Little was known about the population coverage and causes of sight impairment (SI) registration within the Caribbean, or the extent to which register studies offer insights into population eye health. METHODS: We compared causes of SI registration in the Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTBWA) register with findings from the 2014 National Eye Survey of Trinidad and Tobago (NESTT), and estimated registration coverage. Cross-sectional validation studies of registered clients included interviews, visual function and cause ascertainment in July 2013, and interviews and v

Antibiotic Prescribing in Dental Practice: A Cross-sectional Survey in Trinidad and Tobago.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat. Trinidad and Tobago used the World Health Organisation's Global Action Plan to develop its National Action Plan (NAP) against AMR. A review of the NAP showed the need for use-based studies to direct interventions against AMR. This study was designed to provide evidence on dental prescribing habits, to support interventions against the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains. METHODS: A cross-sectional study. A consent letter and questionnaire were developed in REDCap®, a link to which was sent to registered dentists. The questio

Diagnosis of Mycobacteriosis in Cultured Hybrid Tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) in Trinidad and Tobago.

Mycobacteriosis is a significant disease in fish husbandry, with negative impacts on production facilities. Moreover, some Mycobacterium spp. that infect fish have zoonotic potential. Morbidity and mortality events at hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) farms in Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) associated with mycobacterial infections prompted a broader surveillance investigation across the hybrid tilapia farms within the country. Of the 168 specimens examined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), 42% were Mycobacterium spp. positive. Among the mycobacteria-positive specimens, clinical signs (lethargy an
