A Teen With Trisomy 18: Challenges and Triumphs of a Long Life With Edwards Syndrome.

Trisomy 18, also known as Edwards syndrome, is a rare genetic disorder resulting from an extra copy of chromosome 18. It is associated with severe congenital malformations, distinct clinical features, and high morbidity and mortality. Despite the odds, we describe the case of a 16-year-old female patient with trisomy 18. During a well-child visit with her pediatrician, the patient's parents express concerns about worsening seizure activity. Her seizures began at the age of nine and were initially well managed with anti-epileptics but eventually progressed to refractory generalized and myocloni

Ocular findings in a case of trisomy 18 with variant of Dandy-Walker syndrome.

Trisomy 18 is the second most common chromosomal syndrome and has multiple dysmorphic features. However, ocular findings in trisomy 18 are rarely reported. Retinal folds are the most common ocular finding described to date, although retinal hypopigmentation, dysplasia, and areas of hemorrhage and gliosis are also found in trisomy 18. Dandy-Walker syndrome is a brain malformation that has been reported in association with numerous chromosomal abnormalities, although it has rarely been reported in association with trisomy 18. Here, we present a case of trisomy 18 with ocular pathology and varian

Twin pregnancy with Roberts syndrome in one fetus and trisomy 18 in the other.

We report a case of a 26-year-old multigravida pregnant woman with a history of 3 stillbirths with hydrops fetalis who presented with 17 weeks menstrual age. Sonographic examination revealed twin gestation. Twin 1 showed subcutaneous edema, pleural effusion, and mesomelic limb shortening, suggestive of lethal skeletal dysplasia (Roberts syndrome). Twin 2 corresponded to 17 weeks menstrual age with no major malformations. Karyotyping of the fetuses showed normal karyotype in twin 1 and trisomy 18 in twin 2. Fetal autopsy confirmed the sonographic findings. The occurrence of trisomy 18 in the fe

Bowen-Conradi Syndrome: a trisomy 18-like autosomal recessive disorder common in Hutterites.

Bowen-Conradi syndrome (BCS) is a common lethal condition amongst infants of Hutterite ancestry. We describe a newborn infant with features of BCS, which may mimic trisomy 18 and other conditions such as cerebro-oculo-facial syndrome (COFS) and CHARGE syndrome. We describe the constellation of clinical findings in BCS. We believe this is the first case of BCS clinically confirmed by molecular testing for mutation in the EMG1 gene.

Maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome, open neural tube defects and trisomy 18.

Maternal serum screening identifies women at an increased risk of a pregnancy with Down's syndrome or trisomy 18 or an open neural tube defect. The triple test, consisting of maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein, unconjugated estriol and human chorionic gonadotropin was carried out by a chemiluminescence immunoassay method in our laboratory. The study consisted of 373 pregnant women. The gestational range for the study group was 14-22 weeks. The mean maternal age for the study group was 28.53 +/- 5.46 years (range 17.4 to 43.5 years); 9.1% of the women were considered at high risk for Down's syndr

Congenital heart anomalies in the trisomy 18 syndrome, with reference to congenital polyvalvular disease.

Congenital polyvalvular disease (CPVD) is seen in trisomy 18 and other aneuploidy syndromes. However, its extent and nature have not been studied. Gross pathologic and histologic aspects of the heart were studied in 15 autopsied cases of trisomy 18. All had CPVD; other congenital defects included membranous ventricular septal defect (87%), patent ductus arteriosus (73%), and high takeoff of the right coronary ostium (80%). With a scoring system, histologic findings of the valves of all trisomy 18 cases were compared with those of 30 normal hearts of comparable age in order to determine the deg

Plurimalformative syndrome associating trisomy 18 and omphalocele. Case report and review of the literature.

Trisomy 18 or Edwards syndrome is a rare chromosomal anomaly, associated with mild to severe intellectual disabilities and multiple congenital anomalies. Trisomies 18 and 13 are lethal, only 5-10% of patients surviving the first year of life. Although prenatal biological and ultrasound investigations are mandatory and free and the detection rate of chromosomal abnormalities is high, the birth of children with no real chance at a normal life being thus avoided by therapeutic abortion, the parents of the here presented child did not benefit from medical examination or prenatal tests, unfortunate

Trisomy 13, 18, 21, Triploidy and Turner syndrome: the 5T's. Look at the hands.

First trimester spontaneous abortions occur in 15 to 20% of all clinically recognized pregnancies. Chromosomal -anomalies are responsible for more than 50% of spontaneous abortions. The majority (90%) of these chromosomal anomalies are numerical, particularly autosomal trisomies (involving chromosomes 13,16, 18, 21, 22), polyploidy and monosomy X. At birth chromosomal anomalies are still an important cause of congenital malformations occurring in 0,55% of newborns (autosomal: 0,40%, sex chromosomal: 0,15%). Autosomal trisomies result from maternal -meiotic nondisjunction of gametogenesis and t

Intraocular pathology of trisomy 18 (Edwards's syndrome): report of a case and review of the literature.

The ophthalmic histopathology is detailed in a case of trisomy 18 (Edwards's syndrome). In addition to the ocular pathology already reported, previously unreported findings of iris stromal hypoplasia, abnormal lens shape, and decreased ganglion cells in the retina are noted. The ophthalmic histopathology associated with this syndrome and the relationship of several genetic disorders to their ocular manifestations are discussed.

Features of trisomy 18 and 18p- syndromes in an infant with 45,XY,i(18q).

An isochromosome for the long arm of chromosome number 18 - 46,XY,i(18q) - was found in an infant who had features of both trisomy 18 and 18p- syndromes. Findings compatible with trisomy 18 included postmature delivery, prominent occiput, severe congenital heart disease, overlapping fingers, and rocker-bottom feet. Those of 18p- syndrome, which frequently resembles Turner syndrome, were downward obliquity to the palpebral fissures, short, webbed neck, low posterior hairline, and widely-spaced nipples. The infant died of heart failure at 3.5 months of age. Parental karyotypes were normal.

Single-cell chromatin accessibility landscape of human umbilical cord blood in trisomy 18 syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Trisomy 18 syndrome (Edwards syndrome, ES) is a type of aneuploidy caused by the presence of an extra chromosome 18. Aneuploidy is the leading cause of early pregnancy loss, intellectual disability, and multiple congenital anomalies. The research of trisomy 18 is progressing slowly, and the molecular characteristics of the disease mechanism and phenotype are still largely unclear. RESULTS: In this study, we used the commercial Chromium platform (10× Genomics) to perform sc-ATAC-seq to measure chromatin accessibility in 11,611 single umbilical cord blood cells derived from one tris

False-positive quadruple screen test for trisomy 18 in a patient with a fetus with Bloom's syndrome.

In the literature, conflicting reports on the significance of false-positive maternal serum multiple marker testing for trisomy 18 are encountered; however, the biology of this finding is discussed infrequently. We present such a case in association with Bloom's syndrome in the fetus. The fetus had intrauterine growth restriction, seen early in the second trimester, oligohydramnios, and was delivered at 34 weeks of gestation for impending fetal compromise. We propose that the adverse outcome of the pregnancy with false-positive serum analyte testing for trisomy 18 might result from a small-siz

A maternal serum screen for trisomy 18: an extension of maternal serum screening for Down syndrome.

The feasibility of extending second-trimester maternal blood screening for Down syndrome so as to include screening for trisomy 18 was examined using stored maternal serum samples collected for neural tube-defect screening. There were 12 samples from trisomy 18 pregnancies and 390 controls. The median maternal serum concentration of alpha-fetoprotein, free alpha-subunit human chorionic gonadotrophin, free beta-subunit human chorionic gonadotrophin, intact human chorionic gonadotrophin, total estriol, unconjugated estriol, estradiol, human placental lactogen, and progesterone were lowered in th
