Seven triterpenoids have been isolated from the roots of Euphorbia nematocypha Hand-Mazz. through chromatography on 20% AgNO3-silica gel. One of them was identified as a new compound named nematocyphol on the basis of spectral data (IR, EIMS, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR). Its structure was deduced as IVa. Other compounds were identified as nepehinol acetate (I), germanicol acetate (II), euphol (III), tanaxastanol (Va), 24-methylenecycloartanol (VIa) and nepehinol (VIIa). These compounds were obtained for the first time from this plant.

Platycodon grandiflorum is a perennial plant that has been used for medicinal purposes. Specifically, it is widely used in Northern China and Korea for the treatment of various diseases. In this research, dried acetone:chloroform extract of aerial parts of E. denticulata as one of the endemic plants to Iran, afforded a number of triterpenes and steroids including: betulin, 24-methylene-cycloart-3-ol, cycloart-23Z-ene-3β,25-diol, cycloart-23E-ene-3β,25- diol, ergosta-8,24-dien-3-ol (obtusifoliol) and beta-sitosterol which were reported for the first time from this plant. A series of lupane, oleanane and ursane furoyloxy-triterpenoids were synthesised via acylation with 2-furoyl chloride and subsequently tested for anti-influenza activity against the pandemic influenza virus A/Puerto Rico/8/1934 (H1N1). Among them, 3β-furoyloxy-oleanolic and 3β-furoyloxy-ursolic acids were the most potent with IC50 values 17 and 1 µM with selectivity indexes of 32 and 26, respectively.
