Tularemia and tularemia vaccination induce similar, yet partially distinct, multifunctional T-cell responses.

Vaccination with the live vaccine strain (LVS) or natural infection with Francisella tularensis confers long-lasting protection against re-infection, and it is almost exclusively dependent on cell-mediated immunity. The extent, if any, to which vaccine-induced and infection-induced immunity differ in quality and persistence remains unclear. In this study, we compared human immune responses resulting from LVS vaccination and tularemia infection. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from vaccinees and convalescent patients were recall-stimulated and analyzed for proliferation, characterization of

Tularemia from a cat bite: case report and review of feline-associated tularemia.

We report the case of a 63-year-old man who developed ulceroglandular tularemia complicated by pneumonia following a cat bite. A review of the literature revealed 51 cases of cat-related tularemia reported since 1928. Details of 15 cases (including the present case) were available and analyzed. If, following feline contact, patients develop pneumonia or if patients with skin and soft-tissue infection fail to respond to therapy with penicillin, physicians should be alerted to the possibility of tularemia. A greater awareness of this complication following a cat bite or cat scratch is important

Pulmonary tularemia leading to a relapse of tularemia orchitis in a patient on TNF-alpha inhibitor.

PURPOSE: Tularemia represents a zoonotic infection that poses particular diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in immunocompromised patients. We present a rare case of tularemia orchitis in a patient receiving tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) inhibitor treatment. METHODS: We conducted a case analysis of a 71-year-old farmer receiving adalimumab for psoriatic arthritis who developed sequential pulmonary and genitourinary manifestations of tularemia. Clinical presentation, laboratory findings, microbiological identification through culture and polymerase chain reaction testing, imaging s

Histopathologic findings of tularemia lymphadenitis.

Tularemia is a rare zoonotic infection most often acquired through exposure to infected animals, arthropods, or contaminated food or water. Diagnosis typically involves serologic or PCR testing, but histopathologic findings can be a clue to the diagnosis. Here, we present a case of inguinal lymphadenopathy in an adolescent patient with a history of multiple animal exposures and possible tick bite. Excisional lymph node biopsy showed necrotizing granulomatous inflammation, and the clinical history, histologic findings, and serologic results together led to the diagnosis of ulceroglandular tular

Tularemia: a re-emerging zoonosis.

Tularemia, caused by Francisella tularensis, presents cycles of re-emergence in the Northern Hemisphere. In 2024-2025, increased incidence has been documented in Central Europe (Austria: 117 cases; Slovenia: 38 cases; France: 150 cases) and Spain (Castile and León: 206 cases) while the United States reported 220 cases in 2024. These data, combined with advances in molecular diagnostics and therapeutics, underscore the need for updated clinical knowledge. Tularemia is classified as a Category A bioterrorism agent by the CDC due to its extraordinary virulence; as few as 10 bacterial cells can es

Cerebral abscesses complicating tularemia meningitis.

Tularemia meningitis is a distinctly rare entity with only 14 cases reported in the literature, half of which occurred prior to 1950. In this case we provide the first description of cerebral microabscesses which occurred as a complication of tularemia meningitis.

[Tularemia: study of 27 patients].

BACKGROUND: There has been an important tularemia outbreak recently in Spain, which has prompted a high epidemiological interest. Our objective was to describe the series of tularemia cases with emphasis being paid on clinical characteristics and evolution of the disease. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We describe 27 cases of tularemia studied clinically and epidemiologically (survey of the Health Territorial Service at Burgos). Two cases were seen in December 2000 as isolated forms, while the rest of cases accumulated in form of outbreak between September 1997 and the first months of 1998. We performe

Cavitary pneumonia associated with tularemia.

A wide range of microorganisms has been associated with cavitary pneumonia and pulmonary abscess. We present a case of serologically documented tularemia in an animal-hide handler who demonstrated multiple pulmonary infiltrates with cavitation. Inclusion of tularemia in the differential diagnosis of cavitary pneumonia in patients with exposure to animals is emphasized.

Non-vaccinal prophylaxis of tularemia.

Tularemia is a re-emerging zoonosis in many endemic countries. It is caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative bacterium and biological threat agent. Humans are infected from the wild animal reservoir, the environmental reservoir or by the bite of arthropod vectors. This infection occurs through the cutaneous, conjunctival, digestive or respiratory routes. Tularemia generally manifests itself as an infection at the site of entry of the bacteria with regional lymphadenopathy, or as a systemic disease, particularly pulmonary. It is often a debilitating condition due to persistent symptom

[Tularemia in Konya region, Turkey].

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis. In the recent years tularemia has become a re-emerging infection in Turkey with epidemics and also sporadic cases. Transmission occurs most often through consumption of contaminated water and food, direct contact with animals and insect/ tick bites. In this study, we evaluated clinical features and laboratory findings of 35 tularemia cases diagnosed during two outbreaks that occurred in two different villages during two different periods in Konya (located in Central Anatolia), Turkey and five sporadic cases. In both outbreaks,

[Oropharyngeal tularemia: a case report].

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by the gram-negative, aerobic coccobacillus Francisella tularensis. It transmits with the body secretions of the infected rodents, ingestion of the food contaminated with these fluids and bites of infected insects. Ulceroglandular, glandular, oculoglandular, oropharyngeal, typhoidal and pneumonic types may be observed based on the entrance route to the body and location of the bacteria. Although the clinical presentation may vary, oropharyngeal tularemia is the most commonly seen clinical form in Turkey. Otolaryngologists generally experience tularemia wi

Tularemia in bulgaria 2003-2004.

INTRODUCTION: Tularemia is an uncommon but potentially fatal zoonosis. А second outbreak of tularemia in Bulgaria, about 40 years after the first, occurred in 1997 in two western regions, near the Serbian border. In 2003 tularemia reemerged in the same foci. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and the efficacy of antibiotic therapy in a tularemia resurgence in the Slivnitza region in 2003-2004. METHODOLOGY: A total of 26 cases were evaluated. Using medical records, the following data were collected for all patients: symptoms, physical signs, and microbiolog

[Tularemia from a cat bite].

We report the first case in Norway of a man who developed ulceroglandular tularaemia following a cat bite. If after feline contact, patients develop skin and soft-tissue infections that fail to respond to therapy with penicillin, physicians should consider the possibility of tularaemia. Our patient was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin, which is effective against Francisella tularensis and most pathogens associated with feline infections. A greater awareness of infections following a cat bite is important for recognising this uncommon condition.

[Tularemia, a potential bioterrorism weapon].

A POTENTIAL WEAPON: Because of its highly contagious nature with a low inoculum, principally with the biovar A, F. tularensis is considered as an agent that could be used by terrorists, notably when sprayed. Any epidemic of tularemia, essentially in its respiratory form, particularly in areas of low incidence of this infection, should be suspected to be a biowarfare attack. The voluntary contamination of water with this bacteria could also be used as a biological weapon. THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF THE DISEASE: Depend on the mode of contamination, the dose of inoculum and the virulence of the strai

[Tonsillo-pharyngeal form of tularemia].

Clinical, laboratory and serologic features of tonsillopharyngeal form of tularemia in 14 patients were analyzed in the study. The disease was ignored under the diagnosis of typical tonsillopharyngitis followed by cervical lymphadenopathy. Routine laboratory analyses results were non-specific and didn't reveal the disease etiology, while microagglutination test (MAT) of F. tularensis in the second week of disease was positive in 86% of patients. Skin tularin test was positive in all the tested patients during the first week of the disease. The best results in the treatment were achieved by adm
