The authors recently studied the histocompatibility between patients with choriocarcinoma and their husbands and did an in vitro experiment (in an autosystem) to establish whether choriocarcinoma can be treated with lymphocytes from the husband. These studies were directed toward understanding the cellular actions of inhibitor drugs that affect steroidogenesis and cholesterol transport. The authors report the case of a patient with a typical carcinoid syndrome and a severe hypoglycemia due to hyperinsulinism. He was found to have an ileal carcinoid tumor with hepatic metastasis and no evidence of pancreatic insulinoma at surgery and autopsy. By assaying serotonin and insulin in the tumor and in the supernatants of the culture derived from hepatic metastasis, the authors have been able to show that both hormones were produced by the carcinoid tissue. Cultured cells also synthesized minute amounts of gastrin and thyrocalcitonin.

OBJECTIVE: Approximately one third of patients diagnosed with muscle-invasive urinary bladder cancer (UBC) have undetected metastases at the time of treatment of the primary tumor. Currently there are no reliable specific serum markers for monitoring and evaluating risk profiles of urothelial cancers. Several studies suggest that detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) may correlate with the disease status and prognosis at baseline and early in the treatment of cancers. In this study a new way of isolation and in vitro cultivation of CTCs of urinary bladder cancer was introduced.

A 1-year-old male infant showed cerebellar signs and symptoms, and excess urinary excretion of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA). Each of them disappeared spontaneously but a large abdominal tumor occurred at 3 years of age. Surgical specimen of the tumor was diagnosed as neuroblastoma and the patient died at 4 years of age. Serotonin, a biologically active amine, is related to carcinoid syndrome in functioning neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Telotristat ethyl is a novel inhibitor of the tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH), a key enzyme in the production of serotonin. While its use in patients with carcinoid syndrome and uncontrolled diarrhea under somatostatin analogs (SSAs) has been recently approved, in vitro data evaluating its effectiveness are lacking.
