In the area of multiple myeloma (MM) therapy, proteasome inhibitors (PI) have emerged with promising responses both in the first- and second-line setting. Carfilzomib (CFZ) is a second-generation, selective PI approved in 2012 for the treatment of relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) in patients who received 2 prior therapies or have evidence of disease progression within 60 days of completion of last therapy. Its safety profile reported adverse events (AEs) ranging from drug-related AEs (nausea and vomiting), hematologic AEs (neutropenia and thrombocytopenia), and nonhematologic AEs (e

Preoperative splenic artery embolization for massive splenomegaly has been shown to reduce intraoperative hemorrhage during splenectomy. We describe a case of tumor lysis syndrome after proximal splenic artery embolization in a patient with advanced mantle cell lymphoma and splenic involvement. The patient presented initially with hyperkalemia two days after embolization that worsened during splenectomy. He was stabilized, but developed laboratory tumor lysis syndrome with renal failure and expired. High clinical suspicion of tumor lysis syndrome in this setting is advised. Treatment must be s

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is an oncological emergency characterized by severe electrolyte disturbance that typically occurs when hematologic cancer patients have been started on systemic chemotherapy. We present an uncommon case of spontaneous TLS (STLS) occurring in a patient with cholangiocarcinoma. The patient was a 59-year-old male with newly diagnosed differentiated carcinoma of unknown origin who presented with weakness, fatigue, and lightheadedness. Initial imaging revealed cholangiocarcinoma with innumerable pulmonary and hepatic metastases. The laboratory values showed leukocytosis,

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Tumour lysis syndrome (TLS) is an uncommon complication in solid tumors following treatment initiation, and its spontaneous development (STLS) is exceptional. In this study, we analyse the main clinical and prognostic features of a case series with TLS and STLS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Observational retrospective study in which we included all patients with solid tumours diagnosed with TLS and STLS over a period of 16 years, according to Cairo-Bishop criteria.
RESULTS: Nineteen patients were included in the study (mean age 63±16 years): 10 patients (53%) with TLS, a

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a life-threatening oncologic complication caused by the lysis of a vast number of malignant cells resulting in metabolic derangements and organ dysfunction. TLS can occur spontaneously before initiation of any therapies often referred to as spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (STLS), or shortly after the induction of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or cytolytic antibody therapy. TLS is vastly seen in patients with hematological malignancies with high rapid cell turnover rates such as Burkitt lymphoma, acute myelogenous leukemia, and acute lymphocytic leukemia, and is rar

Tumor lysis syndrome is an oncologic emergency that is characterized by severe electrolyte abnormalities and, frequently, by acute renal failure. The syndrome typically occurs in patients with lymphoproliferative malignancies, most often after initiation of treatment. The pathophysiology involves massive tumor cell lysis resulting in the release of large amounts of potassium, phosphate, and uric acid. Deposition of uric acid and calcium phosphate crystals in the renal tubules may lead to acute renal failure, which is often exacerbated by concomitant intravascular volume depletion. The kidney n

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a serious medical condition in which the lysis of tumor cells results in a variety of abnormalities, including elevated uric acid, potassium, and phosphorus, decreased calcium, seizures, arrhythmias, and acute kidney injury (AKI). TLS most often occurs in hematologic cancers and after chemotherapy, whereas cases that arise without chemotherapy are termed spontaneous TLS (STLS). In our case, an 81-year-old female with a past medical history of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) initially presented to the emergency department for left lowe

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is an oncologic emergency characterized by massive tumor cell lysis accompanied by the excessive release of large amounts of intracellular electrolytes and metabolites into the bloodstream. TLS is a potentially life-threatening condition that can lead to acute kidney injury, seizures, and sudden death due to arrhythmias. Therefore, prophylactic measures and prompt therapeutic intervention are essential for its management. TLS in solid tumors is extremely rare and has been documented only in a limited number of case reports. To our knowledge, three previous cases of T

Tumor lysis syndrome is an oncological emergency, which can ultimately lead to death if not recognized early and treated accordingly. The institution of adequate prophylactic measures can decrease its incidence and severity; but very rarely, a highly aggressive neoplasm such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia or Burkitt's lymphoma can present with spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (sTLS). We present the case of a 58-year-old male with newly diagnosed plasmablastic lymphoma with a retroperitoneal bulky mass invading the bladder, who presented with severe sTLS and was admitted to an intensive care u

A 62-year-old man with a complaint of back pain lasting 2 months was admitted. He also presented a huge abdominal tumor. Diagnostic imaging showed metastatic tumors in the liver, lumbar vertebrae and bilateral lung. An ultrasound-guided needle biopsy revealed a lung tumor containing melanic tissue. Subsequently, there was an evident elevation in uric acid, phosphoric acid, potassium and lactate dehydrogenase concentrations in serum. Continuous hemodiafiltration and administration of rasburicase was initiated following the diagnosis of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). However, he died on the fourth

A 16-year-old girl was referred to our hospital complaining of a huge abdominal mass and ascites. Cells from the ascites were morphologically compatible with Burkitt's cells. These cells had surface immunoglobulin (gamma and kappa chain) and were positive for B-cell monoclonal antibody (L21, 24). Small numbers of the same cells were present in the bone marrow. Soon after the beginning of chemotherapy, oliguria, hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia caused by "tumor lysis" developed. Peritoneal dialysis was not effective, and the patient died of acute renal failure. A

A 36-year-old man presented to our hospital with right scrotal swelling. A computed tomographic scan revealed a mass in the right scrotum, multiple masses in the lung and liver, and enlarged cervical, mediastinal, and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. After right high orchiectomy, he was diagnosed with nonseminomatous germ cell tumor (pT3N3M1b), with poor risk prediction according to the International Germ Cell Consensus classification. We started chemotherapy with bleomycin, etoposide, and cisplatin. Since serum alphafetoprotein (AFP) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) levels did not decrease

Acute tumor lysis syndrome (ATLS), which occurs spontaneously, without cytotoxic therapy, is a rare condition. Spontaneous TLS (STLS) has been seen most commonly in lymphoma and leukemia. We report a series of 3 cases of STLS in patients with solid tumors who were hospitalized in our department during a 9-month period and suggest that STLS is probably more frequent than previously thought.

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a rare but life-threatening complication in solid tumors such as colorectal cancer (CRC). We report a 61-year-old male with metastatic CRC and extensive liver metastases who developed acute TLS within 48 hours of initiating FOLFOX chemotherapy. He presented with acute kidney injury (AKI), hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, and elevated liver enzymes. Prompt treatment with intravenous fluids, rasburicase, and febuxostat led to rapid resolution of TLS. Despite recovery, the patient died two weeks later from complications of advanced metastatic disease.

A 13-year-old, female, mixed-breed dog with a huge cranial mediastinal mass underwent radiotherapy (RT). On the following day, the dog presented with lethargy and anorexia. Hematological examination revealed elevated levels of blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, inorganic phosphorus, potassium, lactate dehydrogenase, creatine phosphokinase and aspartate aminotransferase, decreased calcium level, and metabolic acidosis. Urine output markedly decreased. The patient recovered with fluid therapy and diuretic therapy; however, died suddenly from an unknown cause 11 days after RT completion. Histopatho

Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (STLS) is a rare oncologic emergency caused by massive cancer cell lysis or necrosis without a precipitating factor. Although tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is most commonly associated with hematologic malignancies, a small number of cases in solid tumor malignancies have been reported. We present a case of spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome in a 77-year-old female with a widely metastatic, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of unknown origin. She presented in distributive shock, and laboratory testing at admission revealed acute renal failure, high anion gap metab

We report a case of an 83-year-old woman who developed tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) 5 days after FOLFIRI+cetuximab (Cmab) therapy. A huge ascending colon cancer measuring 10 cm in diameter and with peritoneal dissemination was diagnosed. Following successful therapy with FOLFIRI alone, FOLFIRI+Cmab was administered. On day 5, TLS was diagnosed with hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and an increase in serum creatinine. Intravenous furosemide, volume loading, and glucose-insulin therapy resulted in improvement of laboratory data in 2 days. However, she died on the 34th day due to mul

We report on a child with B-cell lymphoma who developed hypertension and reversible posterior leukoencephalopathy syndrome (RPLS) after chemotherapy conducted during recovery from tumor lysis syndrome. After recovery from RPLS, the patient received further combination chemotherapy without recurrence of the neurological signs or symptoms suggestive of RPLS. Many etiological factors have been reported in the development of RPLS; however, little attention has been paid to tumor lysis syndrome as a contributory factor for RPLS. Tumor lysis syndrome can precipitate the development of RPLS in patien
