Atmospheric biogenic volatile organic compounds in the Alaskan Arctic tundra: constraints from measurements at Toolik Field Station.

The Arctic is a climatically sensitive region that has experienced warming at almost 3 times the global average rate in recent decades, leading to an increase in Arctic greenness and a greater abundance of plants that emit biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). These changes in atmospheric emissions are expected to significantly modify the overall oxidative chemistry of the region and lead to changes in VOC composition and abundance, with implications for atmospheric processes. Nonetheless, observations needed to constrain our current understanding of these issues in this critical enviro

A serological screening for potential viral pathogens among semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Reindeer herding and husbandry is a traditional and important livelihood in Fennoscandia, and about 200,000 semi-domesticated reindeer are herded in Finland. Climatic changes, leading to ice-locked winter pastures, and encroachment of pasture-land have led to changes in reindeer husbandry, increasing the extent of supplementary or full ration feeding, which has become very common in Finland. Keeping reindeer in corrals or gathering them at permanent feeding sites will increase nose-to-nose contact between animals and they may be exposed to poor hygienic conditions. This may impact

Serological Evidence of Hepatitis E Virus Infection in Semi-Domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common cause of viral hepatitis in humans. In developing countries, HEV-infections seem to be mainly associated with pigs, but other animal species may be involved in viral transmission. Recently, anti-HEV antibodies were detected in Norwegian wild reindeer. Here, we investigated anti-HEV seroprevalence in Norwegian semi-domesticated reindeer, animals in closer contact with humans than their wild counterparts. Blood samples (n = 516) were obtained from eight reindeer herds during the period 2013-2017 and analysed with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay

The annual, temporal and spatial pattern of Setaria tundra outbreaks in Finnish reindeer: a mechanistic transmission model approach.

BACKGROUND: In northern Finland (Lapland), reindeer are reared as semi-domesticated animals. The region has a short summer season of 2-3 months, yet reindeer are infected with the mosquito-borne filarioid parasite Setaria tundra. The infection causes peritonitis and perihepatitis, which cause significant economic losses due to reduced body weight of infected animals. The objective of this study was to: (i) describe the spatial and temporal pattern of outbreaks in three different areas across Finnish Lapland; and (ii) construct a temperature-driven mechanistic transmission model to quantify the

Molecular detection of Setaria tundra (Issaitshikoff & Rajewskaya, 1928) and Setaria cervi (Rudolphi, 1819) in red deer in Slovakia.

Filaroid nematodes Setaria tundra (Issaitshikoff & Rajewskaya, 1928) and Setaria cervi (Rudolphi, 1819) are internal parasites from family Onchocercidae with occurrence in the northern hemisphere. They have a considerably wide range of final host, including many species of family Cervidae. Intermediate hosts and vectors at the same time, are represented by the several mosquito species, mostly of genus Aedes. Infection of Setaria is relatively harmless and especially in wild cervids usually pass unnoticed. Although in some cases it can induce peritonitis which might be a life threatening condit

Occurrence of matrix-bound phosphine in polar ornithogenic tundra ecosystems: effects of alkaline phosphatase activity and environmental variables.

Phosphine (PH(3)), a reduced phosphorus compound, is a highly toxic and reactive atmospheric trace gas. In this study, a total of ten ornithogenic soil/sediment profiles were collected from tundra ecosystems of east Antarctica and Arctic, and matrix-bound phosphine (MBP), the phosphorus fractions and alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) were analyzed. High MBP concentrations were found in these profiles with the range from 39.59 ng kg(-1) dw to 11.77 μg kg(-1) dw. MBP showed a consistent vertical distribution pattern in almost all the soil profiles, and its concentrations increased at soil surf

Northward expansion of high-stature vegetation reveals net surface-cooling feedbacks in the majority of Canadian Boreal-Tundra ecozones.

Climate warming has driven widespread shrub and tree expansion across the Canadian boreal-tundra. This is widely expected to amplify surface warming. However, whether this expectation is supported by observations remains unresolved. Here we show, using satellite observations of vegetation change alongside climate and surface-energy data from 1986 to 2023, that about 70% of central and northern Canadian ecozones exhibit net surface cooling tendencies, driven by interactions between vegetation change and the environment that reduce the energy available to warm the land surface ( -0.003 to  -0.00

Pulsed resources at tundra breeding sites affect winter irruptions at temperate latitudes of a top predator, the snowy owl.

Irruptive migration is mostly observed in species specialized on pulsed resources and is thought to be a response to unpredictable changes in food supply. We assessed two alternative hypotheses to explain the periodic winter irruptions of snowy owls Bubo scandiacus every 3-5 years in temperate North America: (a) the lack-of-food hypothesis, which states that a crash in small mammal abundance on the Arctic breeding grounds forces owls to move out of the tundra massively to search for food in winter; (b) the breeding-success hypothesis, which states that high abundance of tundra small mammals du

Elevational Differences in Plant Growth Traits, Litter Decomposition, and Soil Bacterial Communities During Deyeuxia angustifolia Encroachment in Alpine Tundra.

Graminoid encroachment in alpine tundra is often reduced to a simple rise in dominant-species cover, leaving open whether this aboveground shift is coupled to belowground soil conditioning. Here, we tracked the encroachment front of Deyeuxia angustifolia (Kom.) Y.L.Chang in the Changbaishan alpine tundra, integrating plant community surveys, growth trait monitoring, litter decomposition, phenology-matched soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing across slightly and largely encroached plots at 2000 and 2200 m. The trauma of the tundra tongue: an experimental and computational study of lingual tissue damage following adhesion to a cold metal lamp post.

BACKGROUND: Tissues can adhere to cold metal surfaces, causing tissue damage upon detachment. For children, this often involves the tongue, so-called tundra tongue. This study aimed to assess the risk and extent of tongue tissue damage following adhesion to cold metal lamp posts. METHODS: Eighty-four porcine tongues were acquired shortly after slaughter. The apex and basis of each tongue were separately brought into contact with a section of a cold metal lamp post and detached gradually or rapidly. Detachment force was recorded and tongues were visually inspected for macroscopic injuries. Sel

Wastewater as a driver of lineage replacement in Parisotoma notabilis sensu lato (Collembola): L2 conquers the tundra, L1 dominates the taiga.

Wastewater is a widespread stressor, but its impact on the genetic structure of soil invertebrates remains poorly understood. We studied the distribution of genetic lineages of the parthenogenetic springtail Parisotoma notabilis sensu lato in tundra and taiga zones of the European North of Russia, focusing on wastewater-affected (technogenic) sites. Using COI and 28S rDNA markers, we analysed 90 specimens from 18 sites representing three habitat types (zonal, floodplain, technogenic) per zone and identified four lineages: L1, L2, L4 and L-East. Distribution was highly habitat-specific and prim

Evaluation of genetic parameters affecting the reliability and effectiveness of kinship reconstruction in Forest and Tundra Nenets populations using X-STR markers.

X-chromosomal STR markers (X-STR) are informative tools for kinship reconstruction, particularly in cases where standard autosomal panels have limited discriminatory power: when reconstructing kinship between full sisters, paternal half-sisters, paternal grandmother and granddaughter, maternal aunt and niece. However, the use of X-STR markers in forensic genetics requires consideration of linkage disequilibrium structure and the use of haplotype frequencies in calculating the likelihood ratio (LR). In this work, the genetic structure of Forest and Tundra Nenets populations was assessed using 1

A Screening for Virus Infections in Eight Herds of Semi-domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway, 2013-2018.

Background: Previous serological screenings have indicated that Eurasian semi-domesticated tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Finnmark, Northern Norway, are exposed to alphaherpesvirus, gammaherpesvirus and pestivirus. Alphaherpesvirus (i.e., Cervid herpesvirus 2; CvHV2) has been identified as the transmissible component of infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC). Limited knowledge exists on the presence and prevalence of virus infections in other herding regions in Norway, which are hosting ~67,000 semi-domesticated reindeer and have contact with other species and populations of wi

Screening of mosquitoes for filarioid helminths in urban areas in south western Poland-common patterns in European Setaria tundra xenomonitoring studies.

In recent years, numerous studies screening mosquitoes for filarioid helminths (xenomonitoring) have been performed in Europe. The entomological monitoring of filarial nematode infections in mosquitoes by molecular xenomonitoring might serve as the measure of the rate at which humans and animals expose mosquitoes to microfilariae and the rate at which animals and humans are exposed to the bites of the infected mosquitoes. We hypothesized that combining the data obtained from molecular xenomonitoring and phenological studies of mosquitoes in the urban environment would provide insights into the

Long-term deepened snow promotes tundra evergreen shrub growth and summertime ecosystem net CO2 gain but reduces soil carbon and nutrient pools.

Arctic climate warming will be primarily during winter, resulting in increased snowfall in many regions. Previous tundra research on the impacts of deepened snow has generally been of short duration. Here, we report relatively long-term (7-9 years) effects of experimentally deepened snow on plant community structure, net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE), and soil biogeochemistry in Canadian Low Arctic mesic shrub tundra. The snowfence treatment enhanced snow depth from 0.3 to ~1 m, increasing winter soil temperatures by ~3°C, but with no effect on summer soil temperature, moisture, or thaw depth.

First detection of a cervidpoxvirus in Europe-disease occurrence in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) in Norway and Sweden.

UNLABELLED: Globally, there are six millions of Rangifer spp., including both wild and semi-domesticated populations. Reindeer herding with Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is central to the Fennoscandian Sámi people. Commencing in 2018, a novel disease presenting with periorbital lesions was reported in reindeer in multiple locations in Norway and Sweden, as individual cases and outbreaks. Lesions were also seen on the genitals, nostrils, and ears of affected reindeer, in combination with lethargy. Necropsy findings included lesions with crusts on the eyelids, vulva, and

Inkoo and Sindbis viruses in blood sucking insects, and a serological study for Inkoo virus in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer in Norway.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne viruses pose a serious threat to humans worldwide. There has been an upsurge in the number of mosquito-borne viruses in Europe, mostly belonging to the families Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus (Sindbis, Chikungunya), Flaviviridae (West Nile, Usutu, Dengue), and Peribunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, California serogroup (Inkoo, Batai, Tahyna). The principal focus of this study was Inkoo (INKV) and Sindbis (SINV) virus circulating in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and some parts of Russia. These viruses are associated with morbidity in humans. However, there is a knowledge

Railroad derived nitrogen and heavy metal pollution does not affect nitrogen fixation associated with mosses and lichens at a tundra site in Northern Sweden.

Traffic derived nitrogen (N) and heavy metal pollution is a well-known phenomenon, but little explored in otherwise pristine ecosystems such as subarctic tundra. Here, the main source of N input to the ecosystem is via N2 fixation by moss- and lichen-associated bacteria. While inhibitory effects of N deposition on moss-associated N2 fixation have been reported, we still lack understanding of the effects of traffic derived N and heavy metal deposition on this ecosystem function in an otherwise pristine setting. To test this, we established a distance gradient (0-1280 m) away from a metal pollut

Ocular Histopathological Findings in Semi-Domesticated Eurasian Tundra Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) with Infectious Keratoconjunctivitis after Experimental Inoculation with Cervid Herpesvirus 2.

Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) is a common transmissible ocular disease in semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). In large outbreaks, IKC may affect tens of animals in a herd, with the most severe cases often requiring euthanasia due to the destruction of the affected eyes and permanent blindness. An experimental inoculation with cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2), alone or in combination with Moraxella bovoculi, demonstrated that CvHV2 has the ability to cause clinical signs of IKC in previously unexposed reindeer. Tissues collected from upper and lower eyel
