Cryptosporidiosis and turkey viral hepatitis in turkeys.

Cryptosporidiosis and turkey viral hepatitis were diagnosed in 25-day-old turkeys with increased mortality, enteritis, and stunting. Necropsy lesions included foul-smelling, tan-colored, loose feces in the terminal small intestines and ceca. The small intestines and ceca were congested. Multiple white to gray foci were present in the liver and pancreas. Mortality attributed to these conditions was estimated at 4.9%. Microscopic lesions included necrosis with accumulations of macrophages in the liver and pancreas. Bile-duct hyperplasia was present in the livers. Microscopic intestinal lesions c

Diarrhea associated with intestinal Cryptosporidiosis in turkeys.

Turkey poults were suffering from diarrhea on a farm in which several previous grow-outs of turkeys had experienced a clinically identical problem. Upon necropsy, significant gross lesions were restricted to the gastrointestinal tract. Segments of small intestine were pale and distended with cloudy mucoid material and a few gas bubbles. The ceca contained fluid and gas. Fresh organ portions were collected and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin and submitted for histological processing and examination (light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy). Cryptosporidia in the respiratory tract of turkeys.

Cryptosporidia were found in the respiratory tract of turkeys in eight flocks on five different farms over a 4-month period. Turkeys ranged in age from 2 1/2 weeks to 11 weeks of age. All had respiratory signs. Diagnoses were made by examining wet smears and confirmed by histopathological examinations.

Surgical anesthesia in turkeys with thialbarbital sodium.

Thialbarbital sodium was found to be a reliable and economical general anesthetic for domesticated turkeys. Despite shortness of action of the initial dose, surgical anesthesia was maintained longer than 2 hours by intermittent infusion via a brachial vein cannula. The drug was reconstituted just before use (66 mg/ml) with sterile 1% saline solution. Rapid smooth induction was produced with an initial dosage of 30 mg/kg for hens and 26.5 mg/kg for toms, when administered within a 30- to 60-second interval. Supplemental infusion of the drug in increments of 0.25 to 1.5 ml was used to sustain th

Molecular characterization of pandemic H1N1 influenza viruses isolated from turkeys and pathogenicity of a human pH1N1 isolate in turkeys.

Suspected human-to-animal transmission of the 2009 pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) virus has been reported in several animal species, including pigs, dogs, cats, ferrets, and turkeys. In this study we describe the genetic characterization of pH1N1 viruses isolated from breeder turkeys that was associated with a progressive drop in egg production. Sequence analysis of all eight gene segments from three viruses isolated from this outbreak demonstrated homology with other human and swine pH1N1 isolates. The susceptibility of turkeys to a human pH1N1 isolate was further evaluated experimentally. The 50% tur

Avian Orthoavulavirus 1 Vaccination Failure in Minnesota Turkeys.

Minnesota is the leading state in number of turkeys produced in the United States. Turkey flocks in the field are usually vaccinated several times with live avian orthoavulavirus 1 (AOAV-1) vaccines starting as early as 2 wk of age (WOA). During the years 2018-2019, many turkey flocks were diagnosed with low-virulence AOAV-1 infection around 9 WOA that led to respiratory disease, although they were previously vaccinated. This study was designed to investigate the immunity against AOAV-1 in Minnesota turkey flocks in the field and experimentally after vaccination. We reviewed antibody titers ag

Prevalence of skin lesions in turkeys at slaughter.

1. The aims of this study were (i) to evaluate the prevalence of welfare-related cutaneous lesions in turkeys at the end of the rearing period and (ii) to study the correlations between lesions. 2. The percentage of lesions in each flock was determined by observation at the slaughterhouse. Sixty flocks were investigated in 13 slaughterhouses between April and July 2006. 3. All flocks showed a high proportion of turkeys with footpad lesions, with 40·7% of turkey flocks having severe footpad dermatitis. A significant number of feet had swelling of the footpad and deviated toes (60·0% and 21·4% r

Zinc phosphide intoxication of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo).

Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is a rodenticide used to control a variety of small mammal species. It is available over-the-counter or as a restricted-use pesticide depending on how it is to be applied. The toxicity of Zn3P2 is dependent on the species exposed, whether the animal is able to vomit or not, and whether it is ingested on a full or empty stomach. Nontarget species can be exposed through inadvertent or intentional product misapplication. In this article we describe four mortality events in which wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were believed to have been intoxicated following the ingestio

Avulsion of the common retinaculum in meat turkeys.

An increase in leg condemnations was experienced in several commercial meat flocks of male and female turkeys. Affected legs had hematomas around and above the tibiotarsus-tarsometatarsus (hock) joint. Avulsion of the common retinaculum from the external condyle was observed when the skin and muscular fascia were removed. A farm investigation was performed and similar changes were observed in turkeys between 10 and 19 wk of age. Interestingly, birds with avulsion of this fibrinous bridge were not lame. Body weights were normal, no infectious agent was detected, and mineral contents of bones an

[Carbon dioxide stunning for the slaughter of turkeys].

In an experimental study on stunning of 460 turkeys in a CO2 enriched atmosphere (60-70% CO2 in air), as a more animal protecting and more economic alternative to conventional electrical stunning, the following results are obtained: all animals show respiratory arrest within 100 seconds. After being dipped in a CO2 enriched atmosphere for a few seconds the turkeys show head shaking and forced respiration which has to be considered as a strain the animals are conscious of. The meat hygienic results after CO2 stunning are much better than after electrical stunning.

Pathology of vitamin D deficiency in growing turkeys.

Turkey poults were fed a vitamin D-deficient diet and examined for clinical signs and structural changes of bone and parathyroid glands. Vitamin D-deficient poults developed ricketic changes during days 10 to 14. Control poults (deficient diet plus vitamin D) did not develop rickets. In deficient poults, lengths of proliferating-prehypertrophied zones of growth plates increased significantly in the proximal tibiotarsus but were only slightly elongated in the distal tibiotarsus. Unmineralized hypertrophic chondrocyte zones increased in length rapidly in conjunction with a decrease in the length

The pathology of deep pectoral myopathy of turkeys.

The gross and microscopic pathology of deep pectoral myopathy was studied in 35 turkey breeder hens. In this disease the lesions, consisting of strictly focal ischaemic necrosis, were confined entirely to the supra-coracoid (deep pectoral) muscles of one or both sides. Vascular lesions consisting of thrombosis, intimal proliferation and aneurysm formation were located in, and immediately around, the necrotic muscle tissue. Although this peripheral vascular disease would perhaps be sufficient to account for the focal ischaemic necrosis, we have no evidence at present to prove its primary involv

Efficacy of a Salmonella live vaccine for turkeys in different age groups and antibody response of vaccinated and non-vaccinated turkeys.

OBJECTIVE: Human Salmonellosis continues to be one of the most important foodborne zoonoses worldwide, although a decrease in case numbers has been noted in recent years. It is a foodborne zoonotic infection most commonly associated with the consumption of raw egg products but also with meat consumption including the consumption of poultry products. Turkey flocks in Europe have been reported to be affected by Salmonella infection, too. The present study examines the efficacy of a newly licensed Salmonella life vaccine in reducing infections with the Salmonella serovars Typhimurium and Enteriti

[Vitamin A requirement of fattening turkeys. 1. Vitamin A requirement of fattening turkeys under conditions of intensive rearing on the ground].

In two experiments with a total of 2,250 fattening turkeys at VEB KIM Turkey and Goose Production Gühlen-Glienicke graded doses of vitamin A (0...20,000 I.U./kg feed) in a ration type poor in vitamin A and carotene were tested in dependence on sex. After a 20-day depletion period the vitamin A supplement of 0, 125 and 250 I.U.vitamin A/kg feed resulted in vitamin A deficiency symptoms after feeding this ration for 1 week. A supplement of between 500 and 1,000 I.U. vitamin A/kg feed diminished consumption in some cases significantly. On the basis of parameters of the fattening performance and o

Serum Biochemistry of Turkeys Challenged with Histomonas meleagridis.

The unavailability of drugs and vaccines has resulted in a resurgence of histomoniasis outbreaks in recent years. Studies have been conducted to understand the infectivity of Histomonas meleagridis field isolates and develop early diagnostic tools for histomoniasis. To better understand the underlying physiological impact of H. meleagridis, serum clinical chemistry analytes were evaluated in three independent studies. Poults were challenged with wild-type H. meleagridis isolates by the cloacal route. In studies 1 and 2, blood samples were collected 9 days postchallenge (PC), while in study 3,

Bacteriophages Isolated From Turkeys Infecting Diverse Salmonella Serovars.

Salmonella is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses worldwide. The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains has increased global concern for salmonellosis. Recent studies have shown that bacteriophages (phages) are novel and the most promising antibacterial agents for biocontrol in foods because phages specifically kill target bacteria without affecting other bacteria, do not alter organoleptic properties or nutritional quality of foods, and are safe and environmentally friendly. Due to the vast variation in Salmonella serotypes, large numbers of different and highl
