The results of tympanoplasty performed for noncholesteatomatous chronic otitis in children aged 2 to 14 years are described. The authors report that the stability of hearing was excellent; they found hearing to be equally good in young children and in older children. Tympanic membrane perforation can be closed at any age. There is no age limit below which perforation should not be closed.

A 42-year-old man presented with a preauricular subcutaneous pulsating node which had appeared a few weeks after a middle ear operation. CT angiography revealed an aneurysm of the superficial temporal artery. The diagnosis was histologically confirmed after surgical resection of the finding. This is the first description of an aneurysm of the superficial temporal artery as a rare complication of a tympanoplasty. In the presented case, the aneurysm must have been caused either by the surgical trauma of the endaural tympanoplastic incision or the sharp retractors.

There has been renewed interest in the use of cartilage for middle-ear reconstructions. The aim of the present review is to examine the indications, techniques and surgical outcomes of cartilage tympanoplasties reported in the literature. There have been concerns regarding weakening of cartilage struts, from histological studies involving explants; as a result, cartilage struts for ossiculoplasty have not gained popularity. On the other hand, cartilage tympanoplasty is now an established procedure for tympanic membrane and attic reconstruction. The commonest techniques involve cartilage palisa

BACKGROUND: Among other materials it is also possible to use autologous fat tissue for closing tympanic membrane perforations. In this study we have evaluated 44 consecutive myringoplasties with adipose tissue performed between 1999 and 2001.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The indications were residual microperforations following tympanoplasty with temporalis fascia or tympanic membrane perforations due to trauma or chronic otitis media simplex. Myringoplasty with fat tissue was performed as an outpatient procedure and took about 15 minutes. The adipose tissue was harvested from the posterior side of t

The use of a homograft tympanic membrane with an attached malleus has provided an excellent alternative for reconstructing the severely damaged middle ear. I have limited homograft tympanoplasty to four specific indications: previous failure of standard tympanoplasty techniques, high risk of failure (total perforation, absent malleus, slag burns), reconstruction of radical mastoidectomy, and congenital aural atresia. Homograft tympanoplasty has provided a 94 per cent incidence of anatomic success in these severely damaged middle ears. Closure of the air-bone gap to within 25 dB. was accomplish

BACKGROUND: Tympanoplasty is a standard surgical intervention for chronic otitis media (COM) with tympanic membrane perforation. Among various grafting materials, temporalis fascia and conchal cartilage are widely used. This research compares the anatomical and functional outcomes of underlay tympanoplasty using these two grafts.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the graft uptake rate and hearing outcomes of conchal cartilage versus temporalis fascia grafts in type I tympanoplasty using the underlay technique.
METHODS: A prospective comparative research was conducted on 60 subjects diagnos

Cartilage has undergone rapid development in ear surgery since Heermann used the grid cartilage technique to repair large perforations of the tympanic membrane. Cartilage has been widely used in tympanoplasty, ossicular chain reconstruction, reconstruction of the lateral wall of the upper tympanic cavity and the posterior wall of the external auditory canal due to its advantages of convenient sampling, high stability, good elasticity, low metabolic rate, easy survival and strong plasticity. This paper reviews the use of cartilage in tympanoplasty and discusses the possibility of placing cartil

The aim of this study was to introduce a new grafting technique in tympanoplasty that involves use of a boomerang-shaped chondroperichondrial graft (BSCPG). The anatomical and functional results were evaluated. A new tympanoplasty with boomerang-shaped chondroperichondrial graft (TwBSCPG) technique was used in 99 chronic otitis media patients with central or marginal perforation of the tympanic membrane and a normal middle ear mucosa. All 99 patients received chondroperichondrial cartilage grafts with a boomerang-shaped cartilage island left at the anterior and inferior parts. Postoperative fo

Techniques and biomaterials for reconstructive middle ear surgery are continuously and steadily developing. At the same time, clinical post-surgery results are evaluated to determine success or failure of the therapy. Routine quality assessment and assurance is of growing importance in the medical field, and therefore also in middle ear surgery. The exact definition and acquisition of outcome parameters is essential for both a comprehensive and detailed quality assurance. These parameters are not the audiological results alone, but also additional individual parameters, which influence the pos
