Delayed Repair of Ulnar Artery at the Distal Forearm.

Background:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rate of patency after delayed repair of the ulnar artery following primary ligation. Methods: Adult patients with primary ligation of the injured ulnar artery at the forearm who had a delayed repair of the artery were included. Postoperative arterial patency was determined by either physical examination or color Doppler ultrasonographic imaging. Postoperative complications and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score were recorded. Results: Eight consecutive patients during a 3-year period were included. The mean age was 35 years

Ulnar dimelia without duplicated arterial anatomy.

In this case report a four-year-old girl with ulnar dimelia is described. She had six digits without mirror symmetry in her right hand. The first pre-axial digit was excised and true pollicisation performed for the second pre-axial digit. The arterial anatomy was abnormal but there was not symmetrical development of the arterial tree.

Unusual Anatomic Variations Associated With Bilateral Ulnar Artery Hypoplasia.

Variations and anomalies of upper extremities have been commonly reported in routine dissection, clinical practices, and cadaver studies. Despite ongoing research on arterial variations of upper extremities, the absence of bilateral ulnar artery is extremely rare with only 3 patients reported. As the authors are presenting a successfully treated patient, initially prepped for radial forearm osteocutaneous free flap for treatment on oromandibular defect after a wide resection of head and neck cancer lesion, being confirmed to have bilateral ulnar artery hypoplasia and due to this, the patient h

Allen's test: a tool for diagnosing ulnar artery trauma.

Trauma to the ulnar artery was first reported by Von Rosen in 1934. In more recent years this condition has been termed ulnar-artery thrombosis, hypothenar hammer syndrome or post-traumatic digital ischemia. Trauma to the ulnar artery is caused by the repeated use of the hand as a hammer in order to apply force to an object. Any person who presents with a history of trauma to the hypothenar eminence of the hand should be screened for ulnar artery thrombosis. This screening can easily and quickly be performed by the nurse utilizing the Allen test. Early detection of vascular insufficiency coupl

Epithelioid Hemangioendothelioma of the Ulnar Artery Presenting with Neuropathy.

We present a rare case of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma arising from the wall of ulnar artery in distal forearm. The presentation was interesting in a 34-year-old man, with progressively worsening symptoms of ulnar neuropathy. A mass was seen arising from the ulnar artery on imaging with ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging. Soft tissue epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in extremities almost always arise from the veins. Existing literature do not have elaborated imaging findings of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma arising from the arterial wall. The aim of this paper is to briefly revie

[False traumatic aneurysm of the ulnar artery in a teenager].

Most aneurysms of hand arteries are traumatic. It is a generally rare unrecognized pathology. Complications are serious (embolism and thromboses of interdigital arteries). Two main causes can be recalled: acute trauma, with development of a false aneurysm; repeated microtrauma (hand hammer syndrome), with occurrence of an arterial dysplasic aneurysm. The diagnosis is based on the presence of a pulsatile mass, with finger dysesthesia, unilateral Raynaud's phenomenon. It is confirmed by duplex Doppler. Arteriography is necessary but can be replaced by an angio-MR. We report a case of false traum

Bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms associated with bilateral ulnar artery atresia: a case report.

Pseudoaneurysms of the radial artery are uncommon and most often localized in an area of penetrating vascular trauma or iatrogenic injury. Hypoplasia of the ulnar artery is even more rare. We report a case of bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms associated with complete absence of any ulnar contribution to the vascularity of the hand. A patient presented with bilateral tender masses adjacent to the anatomic snuff boxes that interfered with hand function. After confirming that these masses were bilateral radial artery pseudoaneurysms, resection of the pseudoaneurysms and microscopic reconstr

Ruptured ulnar artery aneurysm in vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS), also known as type IV Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, is a rare inherited connective tissue disease that affects 1 in 50,000 to 250,000 individuals. It is characterized by catastrophic vascular complications and hollow viscus rupture; 80% of patients with vEDS experience a vascular complication by the age of 40 years, and median life expectancy is 40 to 50 years. The central vasculature and visceral vasculature are most commonly affected; peripheral involvement is much less common. We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman with vEDS previously complicated by r

Pseudoaneurysm of ulnar artery after endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

The authors present an extremely rare case of a pseudoaneurysm of the ulnar artery as a complication of a two-portal endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR). A 70-year-old man with chronic renal failure and on maintenance hemodialysis with a left arteriovenous fistula presented with paresthesia of his right hand. A clinical diagnosis of right carpal tunnel syndrome was confirmed by ultrasonography and an electrophysiologic study. He underwent two-portal ECTR, and the paresthesia was much improved. However, he presented to us one month after operation with severe pain, a tender mass distal to t

Pseudoaneurysm of high origin ulnar artery after penetrating trauma.

High origin ulnar artery from the brachial artery is rare and lies superficially in the forearm. Its reported frequency ranges from 0.17% to 2%. Pseudoaneurysms of peripheral arteries are very rare, and mostly these are the result of penetrating injuries. Here, we report a case pseudoaneurysm of high origin ulnar artery from the brachial artery and its surgical approach method.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome with proximal ulnar artery occlusion.

The case of a man exposed during 25 years to vibration while maneuvering a heavy earth moving tractor is reported. The first clinical manifestation of hand-arm vibration syndrome was a bilateral Raynaud's phenomenon followed five years later by digital necrosis. The arteriography revealed a proximal and bilateral ulnar artery occlusion. Bilateral median nerve conduction abnormalities were also present. Vibration exposure level was much higher than the threshold level proposed by the European Commission. Laboratory examinations for vasculitis and other vascular diseases were all negative. The p

The ulnar artery free flap: the first 7 years.

This paper reviews 7 years of experience with the ulnar artery free flap at the Wellington Regional Plastic Surgery Unit. It has become the free flap we use most commonly to repair defects after resection of intraoral cancers, other head and neck defects, and soft-tissue defects of the lower limbs. Of 56 attempted cases, 52 have been successful. Two procedures were abandoned intraoperatively because of abnormalities in vascular pattern, and 2 failed in the lower limb because of anastomotic failure. These 4 cases occurred early in the development of the technique; all cases in the last 4 years

Compression of the ulnar nerve and spasm of the ulnar artery in Guyon's canal caused by a hypermobile pisiform bone.

We describe compression of the ulnar nerve at Guyon's canal caused by a hypermobile pisiform bone and associated with spasm of the ulnar artery. Treatment included excision of the pisiform bone, and repair of the flexor carpi ulnaris, hypothenar musculature, and periosteum. Postoperatively, the patient reported complete relief of symptoms, which had still been maintained at final follow-up one year later.

Rare combined variations of the axillary artery: superficial ulnar artery and circumflex humeral arteries.

The variations in the branching pattern of the axillary artery are clinically significant. We report an extremely rare combination of arterial variations discovered during the routine anatomical dissection of the left upper limb in a 73-year-old male cadaver. The most significant findings were a superficial ulnar artery originating directly from the axillary artery, proximal to the ansa pectoralis. The superficial ulnar artery coursed superficially in the forearm and terminated as the primary contribution to the superficial palmar arch. Additionally, a common trunk for the circumflex scapular
