Percutaneous ultrasonic lithotripsy (PUL) after shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) failure.

OBJECTIVE: Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is an attractive initial treatment for nephrolithiasis. Unfortunately, a significant number of stones are resistant to SWL therapy and require subsequent percutaneous ultrasonic lithotripsy (PUL) for definitive treatment. Our objective was to determine if previous SWL had adverse effects on PUL success and if there were differences between the patients undergoing primary PUL and those undergoing PUL after SWL failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2001, 108 PULs were performed at our institution, of which 40 (37%) were performed after SWL failure. Stone loc

A base-sequence-modulated Golay code improves the excitation and measurement of ultrasonic guided waves in long bones.

Researchers are interested in using ultrasonic guided waves (GWs) to assess long bones. However, GWs suffer high attenuation when they propagate in long bones, resulting in a low SNR. To overcome this limitation, this paper introduces a base-sequence-modulated Golay code (BSGC) to produce larger amplitude and improve the SNR in the ultrasound evaluation of long bones. A 16-bit Golay code was used for excitation in computer simulation. The decoded GWs and the traditional GWs, which were generated by a single pulse, agreed well after decoding the received signals, and the SNR was improved by 26.

Estimating the properties of bone phantom cylinders through the inversion of axially transmitted low-frequency ultrasonic guided waves.

Early detection of osteoporosis has increasingly focused on ultrasonic methods, particularly guided waves in axial transmission to assess cortical bone properties. This study demonstrates the potential of low-frequency measurements (<500 kHz) for accurately inferring cortical mechanical and geometrical properties. A custom ultrasonic transducer centered at 350 kHz was used to acquire data, processed via a 2D fast Fourier transform to obtain dispersion curves. These were compared with simulations generated using the semi-analytical iso-geometric analysis (SAIGA) method, modeling a quasi-cylindr

Analysis of superimposed ultrasonic guided waves in long bones by the joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices algorithm.

The parameters of ultrasonic guided waves (GWs) are very sensitive to mechanical and structural changes in long cortical bones. However, it is a challenge to obtain the group velocity and other parameters of GWs because of the presence of mixed multiple modes. This paper proposes a blind identification algorithm using the joint approximate diagonalization of eigen-matrices (JADE) and applies it to the separation of superimposed GWs in long bones. For the simulation case, the velocity of the single mode was calculated after separation. A strong agreement was obtained between the estimated veloc

Effect of Ultrasonic Waves and Other Technological Treatments on the Reduction of Acrylamide and Glycoalkaloids in Frozen Prefried Potatoes.

The formation of toxic compounds in fried potato products is a major food safety concern due to their potential adverse effects on human health. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of processing and frying conditions on the contents of acrylamide (AC) and glycoalkaloids in three Peruvian potato varieties (Bicentenaria, CIP-Poderosa Pollera, and Única). Samples were subjected to ultrasound pretreatment, variations in precooking and prefrying parameters, and three frying methods: deep-frying (DF), oven-frying (OF), and air-frying (AF). A Taguchi design was applied to analyze color variation

Smart structural health monitoring (SHM) system for on-board localization of defects in pipes using torsional ultrasonic guided waves.

Most reported research for monitoring health of pipelines using ultrasonic guided waves (GW) typically utilize bulky piezoelectric transducer rings and laboratory-grade ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment. Consequently, the translation of these approaches from laboratory settings to field-deployable systems for real-time structural health monitoring (SHM) becomes challenging. In this work, we present an innovative algorithm for damage identification and localization in pipes, implemented on a compact FPGA-based smart GW-SHM system. The custom-designed board, featuring a Xilinx A

Application Value and Clinical Correlation of Ultrasonic Shear Wave Elastography in Chronic Kidney Disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study is the first attempt to apply shear wave elastography (SWE) technology to the dynamic evaluation of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), aiming to fill the evidence gap of this technology in this clinical scenario. METHODS: This case-control study enrolled 75 biopsy-confirmed CKD patients (observation group) and 20 healthy adults (control group). Renal morphological parameters (length, diameter, parenchymal thickness) were obtained via two-dimensional ultrasonography. Under SWE mode, three consecutive measurements of Young's modulus (Emean, Emax, Emin) were perfor

Correlations between ultrasonic guided wave velocities and bone properties in bovine tibia in vitro.

Correlations between ultrasonic guided wave velocities and bone properties were investigated in bovine tibia in vitro. The velocities of the first arriving signal and the slow guided wave, termed V(FAS) and V(SGW), along the long axis of the tibia were measured at 200 kHz in 20 bovine tibiae using the axial transmission technique. V(FAS) yielded significant negative correlation coefficients of -0.54 to -0.66 with the bone properties. In contrast, V(SGW) yielded strong positive correlation coefficients of 0.68-0.84. The best univariate predictor of V(FAS) and V(SGW) was the cortical thickness y

Excitation of ultrasonic Lamb waves using a phased array system with two array probes: phantom and in vitro bone studies.

Long bones are good waveguides to support the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves. The low-order guided waves have been consistently observed in quantitative ultrasound bone studies. Selective excitation of these low-order guided modes requires oblique incidence of the ultrasound beam using a transducer-wedge system. It is generally assumed that an angle of incidence, θi, generates a specific phase velocity of interest, co, via Snell's law, θi=sin(-1)(vw/co) where vw is the velocity of the coupling medium. In this study, we investigated the excitation of guided waves within a 6.3-mm thick b

Ultrasonic Assessment of Precursor Fatigue Damage in CFRP Composites: A Synthesis of Coda Waves, Nonlinear Indicators, Stress Relaxation, and Validation.

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites can accumulate distributed microstructural damage before visible delamination or substantial stiffness loss becomes apparent. This article presents a program-based synthesis of six publications that examined precursor fatigue damage using guided coda waves, nonlinear guided waves, high-frequency pulse-echo ultrasonics, and scanning acoustic microscopy. The evidence comprises a separate incremental coda-wave campaign to 300,000 cycles and a coordinated fatigue-relaxation program conducted in three 75,000-cycle stages. Coda-wave interferometry detected

Analysis of ultrasonic waves propagating in a bone plate over a water half-space with and without overlying soft tissue.

Recent in vitro studies have shown that guided waves can characterize bone properties. However, for clinical applications to be viable, the soft-tissue layer should be considered. This study examined the effect of soft tissue on guided waves using a bovine bone plate over a water half-space and overlaid by a 4-mm gelatin-based soft-tissue mimic. The data (with and without soft tissue) clearly show a high-frequency, fast-propagating wave packet and a low-frequency, delayed phase group. The presence of soft tissue attenuates the signals significantly and increases mode density and number as pred

Ultrasonic wave velocity and bone mineral density in skull bones of ovariectomized and spontaneous-menopause mice.

Osteoporosis is a public health concern strongly associated with menopause and aging. In this study, ovariectomized (OVX) and spontaneously menopausal (SM) C57BL/6J mice were used to experimentally investigate the effects of menopause and aging on the skull bone (unloaded bone). Ultrasonic longitudinal wave velocities and volumetric bone mineral density (v.BMD) were measured using micro-Brillouin scattering (μ-BS) and X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). The experimental findings revealed that v.BMD was significantly lower in OVX and SM mice than in Sham-operated (control) mice. The measure

An intelligent colony optimization imaging method for composites health monitoring using ultrasonic guided wave.

Damage imaging technology based on ultrasonic guided wave can characterize and visualize structural damage. However, current imaging methods require high accuracy in wave packets information extraction, resulting in artifacts, large spots and false imaging. Therefore, an intelligent colony optimization imaging method is proposed to transform the damage imaging problem into the scattering sources search problem. The number of imaging trajectories through potential scattering sources is employed as the fitness function to assess the damage possibility in this individual. The fitness function is

The Design and Verification of an Active SAMSR Ultrasonic Guided Wave Monitoring System with Ultra-Low Crosstalk.

Due to long propagation distance and high sensitivity to a variety of damages, ultrasonic guided wave technologies have been widely applied in the damage detection or health monitoring of pipe networks and large plate-like structures. However, there are two important problems to be solved when applying this technology; namely, the large scanning time required for monitoring large-scaled structures and the serious crosstalk between the actuation and receiving signals, especially when monitoring hot-spot regions. Therefore, this study mainly designed key parts, such as the matrix switcher and at

Quantification of kidney fibrosis using ultrasonic shear wave elastography: experimental study with a rabbit model.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of ultrasonic shear wave elastography for quantification of renal fibrosis in an experimental rabbit model. METHODS: Thirty-eight kidneys of 19 rabbits were studied and categorized into 3 groups: group I, ureter obstruction (n = 9); group II, renal vein occlusion (n = 10); and group III, normal control (n = 19). Before surgery, we measured stiffness at the renal cortex using shear wave elastography and evaluated the sonographic findings, including size, echogenicity, and resistive index. We repeated the same sonographic exa

Imaging ultrasonic dispersive guided wave energy in long bones using linear radon transform.

Multichannel analysis of dispersive ultrasonic energy requires a reliable mapping of the data from the time-distance (t-x) domain to the frequency-wavenumber (f-k) or frequency-phase velocity (f-c) domain. The mapping is usually performed with the classic 2-D Fourier transform (FT) with a subsequent substitution and interpolation via c = 2πf/k. The extracted dispersion trajectories of the guided modes lack the resolution in the transformed plane to discriminate wave modes. The resolving power associated with the FT is closely linked to the aperture of the recorded data. Here, we present a line

Assessment of the fundamental flexural guided wave in cortical bone by an ultrasonic axial-transmission array transducer.

The fundamental flexural guided wave (FFGW), as modeled, for example, by the A0 Lamb mode, is a clinically useful indicator of cortical bone thickness. In the work described in this article, we tested so-called multiridge-based analysis, based on the crazy climber algorithm and short-time Fourier transform, for assessment of the FFGW component recorded by a clinical array transducer featuring a limited number of elements. Methods included numerical finite-element simulations and experiments in bone phantoms and human radius specimens (n = 41). The proposed approach enabled extraction of the FF

Ultrasonic wave propagation in cancellous bone using Voronoi tessellation and elastodynamic finite integration technique.

This study investigates ultrasonic wave propagation in cancellous bone using a numerical framework that combines Voronoi tessellation with the Elastodynamic Finite Integration Technique (EFIT). The proposed approach enables the generation of controlled trabecular-like microstructures while accounting for variations in porosity, seed density, trabecular thickness, and structural discontinuities. A two-dimensional computational model is employed as an initial framework to analyze the influence of microstructural parameters on fast and slow ultrasonic wave propagation under controlled conditions.

Effects of hydrorelease on the mechanical properties of muscle and fascia: A study using ultrasonic shear wave elastography.

PURPOSE: Recent studies have shown that hydrorelease reduces gliding resistance around nerves and between fascia, alleviating pain. However, the effects of hydrorelease on the mechanical properties of muscle and fascia remain unclear. This study aimed to examine changes in the mechanical properties of muscle and fascia before and after hydrorelease. METHODS: Twelve consecutive patients with ultrasound-confirmed thickening or stacking of fascia and tenderness were included. The hydrorelease was performed under ultrasound guidance using a 25-G, 40-mm needle in-plane technique, using 6 mL of sal

A new method to quantify penile erection hardness: real-time ultrasonic shear wave elastography.

BACKGROUND: An important indicator of penile erectile function is erection hardness (EH), which is currently evaluated by the semi-quantitative erectile hardness score (EHS). EH increases continuously during the course of an erection, so although it is statistically a continuous variable, the EHS is a grade variable. We propose a new method for real-time quantitative measurement of penile EH using ultrasonic shear wave elastography (SWE). METHODS: The study group comprised 40 patients with erectile dysfunction (ED) and 20 normal controls who all underwent real-time SWE to measure tissue stiff
