The different diagnostic modalities (MIBI scan, ultrasound, CT, MNR) applied in the preoperative study of hyperparathyroidism, have given excellent sensitivity results, only slightly lower than those obtained by surgical exploration performed by experienced surgeons. We studied the role of color Doppler ultrasonography in the distinction between endometriomas and other adnexal masses. Three hundred and fifty-two ovarian lesions were studied, comparing sonographic diagnosis with pathologic findings. On color Doppler sonography, an endometriotic cyst usually appeared as a cystic lesion with diffuse internal echoes and low vascularization. The sensitivity and specificity of color Doppler transvaginal sonography in detecting endometriotic cysts were 91.8% and 95.3%, respectively. Color-coded Doppler ultrasonography is a combination of real-time sonography and duplex sonography for noninvasive imaging of arterial and venous blood vessels. In 40 patients with acute onset of scrotal pain this diagnostic procedure was correlated with the findings at surgical exploration: 11 had testicular torsion, 4 hydatid torsion, 13 spontaneous detorsion, 2 blunt scrotal trauma and 10 epididymitis. To assess the accuracy of color Doppler ultrasonography in diagnosing hepatic alveolar echinococcosis, 129 patients were examined at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University between July 2004 and June 2010. Those patients suspected of having hepatic alveolar echinococcosis were examined and diagnosed by color Doppler ultrasound. All the cases were compared with the gold standard. The findings of their sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio and 95% confidence interval were recorded.

The authors investigated the blood flow velocity waveforms of the mothers uterine arteries and fetal middle cerebral, renal and umbilical arteries in cases of HELLP syndrome by color Doppler ultrasonography. The elevated velocimetry indices in the uterine and umbilical arteries were the result of utero-placental and fetoplacental vascular lesions with resultant decrease in blood flow. These laid to the centralization of fetal circulation with increased blood flow in cerebral and decreased in renal arteries. All women were delivered small for gestational age infants.
