24(R, S)-Saringosterol - From artefact to a biological medical agent.

Enhancing the cholesterol turnover in the brain via activation of liver x receptors can restore memory in a mouse model for Alzheimer's disease. The edible Asian brown alga Sargassum fusiforme (Hijiki) contains high amounts of oxysterols such as (3β, 24ξ)-stigmasta-5, 28-dien-3, 24-diol (24[R, S]-saringosterol) that are a potent liver x receptor agonists. We aimed to find native European seaweed species with contents of 24(R, S)-saringosterol that are comparable to those found in Sargassum fusiforme. Additionally, we hypothesize that seasonal variations modify the amount of 24(R, S)-saringoste

Perioperative administration of fucoidan induced changes in immune cell composition and resulted in no beneficiary outcomes in the acute phase of postoperative neurocognitive recovery.

For many of the versatile functions of polysaccharides as natural ingredients in human foods, the immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities of fucoidan, partly owing to its high sulfate content, attracted extensive attention in its potential application in cancer therapy as well as in prevention of neurodegeneration. In this study, we characterized the impact of long-term supplementation of Undaria pinnatifida-derived fucoidan on the gene expression and immune cell abundance in mouse PBMCs. Despite the significantly increased Th17 cells and activated NK cells, naïve B cells were substa

Fucoidan from Macrocystis pyrifera has powerful immune-modulatory effects compared to three other fucoidans.

Fucoidan, a sulfated polysaccharide purified from brown algae, has a variety of immune-modulation effects, such as promoting activation of dendritic cells (DCs), natural killer (NK) cells and T cells, and enhancing anti-viral and anti-tumor responses. However, the immune-modulatory effect of fucoidan from different seaweed extracts has not been thoroughly analyzed and compared. We analyzed fucoidans obtained from Ascophyllum nodosum (A. nodosum), Macrocystis pyrifera (M. pyrifera), Undaria pinnatifida (U. pinnatifida) and Fucus vesiculosus (F. vesiculosus) for their effect on the apoptosis of

Fucoidan alleviated colitis aggravated by fiber deficiency through protecting the gut barrier, suppressing the MAPK/NF-κB pathway, and modulating gut microbiota and metabolites.

Insufficient dietary fiber intake has become a global public health issue, affecting the development and management of various diseases, including intestinal diseases and obesity. This study showed that dietary fiber deficiency enhanced the susceptibility of mice to colitis, which could be attributed to the disruption of the gut barrier integrity, activation of the NF-κB pathway, and oxidative stress. Undaria pinnatifida fucoidan (UPF) alleviated colitis symptoms in mice that fed with a fiber deficient diet (FD), characterized by increased weight gain and reduced disease activity index, liver
