Ethical Challenges in Managing a Displaced Neer III Humeral Head Fracture in an Undocumented Immigrant With Early Alzheimer's Disease: A Case Report.

This report describes an 82-year-old undocumented Peruvian female immigrant presenting to the ED with right elbow pain and limited shoulder mobility, diagnosed with a displaced Neer III right humeral head fracture sustained two days prior. She had not clearly communicated shoulder pain to her family for two days post-injury, possibly due to early Alzheimer's disease, which may have impaired her ability to recognize or articulate the severity of her injury, illustrating the clinical-ethical intersection. Radiographic imaging confirmed the fracture with medial displacement, necessitating surgica

Transnational health protection strategies and other health-seeking behavior among undocumented and indigenous dairy workers in a rural new immigrant destination.

Latin American immigrants in new immigrant destinations (NIDs) experience numerous barriers that negatively impact their access to healthcare. Yet the wide range of health-seeking behaviors deployed in response to these barriers-particularly among those who are undocumented and indigenous-are not well understood. Further, studies of immigrant health in NIDs tend to take place in those locations, rather than using a multi-sited design. Building on NID scholarship, the transnational social protection literature, and work on structural vulnerability, this study uses a multi-sited research design

Outcomes in Critically Ill Patients With Traumatic Brain Injury: Ethnicity, Documentation, and Insurance Status.

OBJECTIVES: Disparities in traumatic brain injury outcomes for ethnic minorities and the uninsured have previously been demonstrated; however, outcomes in undocumented immigrants have not been examined. We wanted to determine whether ethnicity, insurance, and documentation status served as risk factors for disparities in traumatic brain injury outcomes between undocumented immigrants and documented residents. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: Patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury admitted to the surgical/trauma ICU at a level 1 trauma center serving a large immigrant population

Psychological distress among Mexican-American and Mexican women as related to status on the new immigration law.

Psychological distress in relation to the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act was examined among 90 Mexican-American and Mexican women divided into three groups (n = 30 each): undocumented immigrants who did not qualify for amnesty, undocumented immigrants who qualified for amnesty, and legal residents of the United States of Mexican descent. Results indicate that the undocumented immigrants who did not qualify for amnesty obtained significantly higher scores on hostility. Contrary to prediction, undocumented immigrants who qualified for amnesty obtained lower scores in anxiety (a statisti

Changes in Type 2 Diabetes Medications Among Primary Care Patients After California's 2022 Medicaid Expansion.

OBJECTIVE: In May 2022, California expanded full-scope Medicaid (Medi-Cal) to low-income undocumented immigrants aged 50 years or older, which provided access to newer type 2 diabetes (T2D) medications. This study examined whether the expansion led to more prescriptions of newer therapies like glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors among older undocumented immigrants. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used patient records between January 2019 to June 2023 from two Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in Los Angeles County. We compared presc

Stratified reproduction and threats to reproductive justice for immigrants: Decision-making for fertility using an ecological model.

In recent years, immigrants in the U.S. have experienced shifting immigration policies, creating an environment of uncertainty. These policies often exacerbate social and economic vulnerabilities among the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the US. Stratified reproduction occurs when society or institutions deem certain individuals "undeserving" of reproduction. Undocumented immigrants in the U.S. experience a number of threats to their reproductive health. Yet, there is little empirical data on how immigration status may influence their decision-making to have children or not have children

Hispanic Health Paradox at the Border: Substance, Alcohol, and Tobacco Use among Latinx Immigrants Seeking Free or Reduced-Cost Care in Southernmost Texas.

OBJECTIVE: Although substantial research has explored the Hispanic health paradox (HHP) and suggests that Latinx immigrants experience positive health outcomes relative to those born in the United States, less research has assessed the role of immigration status. Our aim was to examine this role in Latinx health. METHODS: Using survey data collected at two free/reduced-cost clinics in southernmost Texas, we examined differences in the mental and self-rated health, substance, alcohol, and tobacco use of low-income patients by undocumented/documented immigrant and US-born/naturalized citizen st

The Effects of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on the Educational Outcomes of Undocumented Students.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is the first large-scale immigration policy to affect undocumented immigrants in the United States in decades and offers eligible undocumented youth temporary relief from deportation as well as renewable work permits. Although DACA has improved the economic conditions and mental health of undocumented immigrants, we do not know how DACA improves the social mobility of undocumented immigrants through its effect on educational attainment. We use administrative data on students attending a large public university to estimate the effect of DACA on undo

Narratives About Deported Migrants Who Served in the U.S. Military Reduce Animosity Toward Migrants in the United States.

Animosity toward immigrants, especially those who are undocumented, has reached high levels in many parts of the United States. What can be done to counteract anti-immigrant hostility? One solution is to implement media interventions, which are uniquely positioned to reduce animosity. We thus conducted two studies to assess the efficacy of three media interventions to reduce anti-immigrant attitudes. In Study 1 (N = 2,050), we conducted an intervention tournament and found that one video was particularly effective at reducing anti-immigrant hostility and support for anti-immigrant policies, es

Tuberculosis in the foreign-born population of Tarrant county, Texas by immigration status.

The epidemiology of tuberculosis is changing in the United States as a result of immigration, yet the extent to which different classes of immigrants contribute to overall morbidity is unknown. Tuberculosis in nonimmigrant visitors is of particular interest as they are currently exempt from screening requirements. We conducted a prospective survey of all culture-positive tuberculosis patients in Tarrant County, Texas from 1/98 to 12/00. Immigration status of foreign-born patients was classified as permanent residents, undocumented, or nonimmigrant visitors. Of 274 eligible participants, 114 (4

Concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings about U.S. immigration policy with implications for collective action for immigrants' rights.

OBJECTIVES: As citizens by birth, U.S.-born Latines are not subject to deportation. However, many have undocumented friends or family members who are. We examined whether concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings of anger and fear about U.S. immigration policy as well as identity conflict, variables associated with collective action for immigrants' rights. METHOD: After establishing the effectiveness of our experimental manipulation in a pilot study (N = 378), we randomly assigned a national sample of U.S.-born Mexican and Central Americans

Immigration Enforcement and Children's Living Arrangements.

Tougher immigration enforcement was responsible for 1.8 million deportations between 2009 and 2013 alone--many of them were fathers of American children. We exploit the geographic and temporal variation in the escalation of interior immigration enforcement to assess its impact on the structure of families to which many of the deported fathers of U.S.-born children belonged. We find that the average increase in immigration enforcement during the 2005 to 2015 period has raised by 19 percent the likelihood that Hispanic U.S.-born children might live without their parents in households headed by n

Using Occupational Histories to Assess Heat Exposure in Undocumented Workers Receiving Emergent Renal Dialysis in Georgia.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants often work in jobs that are known as dirty, demanding, and dangerous. Globally, the agricultural occupations have been associated with the emergence of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) primarily in outdoor worker populations. The disease has also been reported in immigrants in the United States who work in agricultural occupations, but little research has been done outside of agricultural workers to determine whether immigrants who work other occupations are at risk for developing CKDu. METHODS: This study assessed the self-reported occupational histori

Effect of Immigration Status on Outcomes in Pediatric Kidney Transplant Recipients.

Kidney transplantation is the optimal treatment for children with end-stage renal disease. For children with undocumented immigration status, access to kidney transplantation is limited, and data on transplant outcomes in this population are scarce. The goal of the present retrospective single-center study was to compare outcomes after kidney transplantation in undocumented children with those of US citizen children. Undocumented residency status was identified in 48 (17%) of 289 children who received a kidney transplant between 1998 and 2010. In undocumented recipients, graft survival at 1 an

Barriers and facilitators for healthcare access among immigrants in Japan: a mixed methods systematic review and meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: While Japan provides universal healthcare, immigrants may experience hampered access to healthcare. A comprehensive review of immigrant healthcare access is also lacking. This systematic review aims to examine barriers and facilitators of healthcare access among immigrants in Japan. METHODS: We searched for literature published in English and Japanese until January 9, 2024. Studies were included if they assessed factors influencing any stage of immigrants' healthcare access, such as perceiving needs, seeking, reaching, utilizing healthcare and the consequences of healthcare, as de

Legal-Spatial Consciousness: A Legal Geography Framework for Examining Migrant Illegality.

In this article, we advance the concept of legal-spatial consciousness-an individual's awareness of how law and space are mutually formed and influential on their lives. Through this concept, we explore how undocumented youth in a variety of American destinations understand and experience migrant illegality. By examining how immigration law and local places are imbricated, we demonstrate how immigrant illegality is defined not only by a patchwork of municipal, state, and federal laws, but also by how undocumented people move through these differently il/legal spaces in their everyday lives. Dialysis Research at Crossroads of Immigration Policy.

Undocumented immigrants experience profound disparities in access to life-sustaining kidney dialysis care due to exclusion from federal insurance programs. In most states, these individuals receive dialysis only under emergency conditions, a practice associated with higher mortality, increased hospitalizations, and significant psychosocial burden compared to scheduled outpatient dialysis. Immigration policy volatility further complicates care delivery and introduces unique challenges for clinical research involving this population. We examine the intersection of immigration policy, dialysis ac
