Malaria surveillance--United States, 2003.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Malaria in humans is caused by any of four species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium (i.e., P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, or P. malariae). These parasites are transmitted by the bite of an infective female Anopheles sp. mosquito. The majority of malaria infections in the United States occur among persons who have traveled to areas with ongoing transmission. In the United States, cases can also occur through exposure to infected blood products, by congenital transmission, or by local mosquitoborne transmission. Malaria surveillance is conducted to ide…

Norovirus activity--United States, 2002.

During June-December 2002, an increased number of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) were reported on cruise ships sailing into U.S. ports. In addition, since October 2002, several states have noted an increase in outbreaks of AGE consistent clinically and epidemiologically with norovirus infection, particularly in institutional settings such as nursing homes (CDC, unpublished data, 2002). This report describes recent norovirus activity in two states and New York City (NYC) and data from CDC that indicate the possible emergence of a predominant, circulating norovirus strain.

Abortion surveillance--United States, 1998.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: In 1969, CDC began abortion surveillance to document the number and characteristics of women obtaining legal induced abortions, to monitor unintended pregnancy, and to assist efforts to identify and reduce preventable causes of morbidity and mortality associated with abortions. REPORTING PERIOD COVERED: This report summarizes and reviews information reported to CDC regarding legal induced abortions obtained in the United States in 1998. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM: For each year since 1969, CDC has compiled abortion data by occurrence. From 1973 to 1997, data were received from …

Pertussis deaths--United States, 2000.

Pertussis (i.e., whooping cough) is associated typically with an inspiratory "whoop," prolonged paroxysmal cough, and posttussive vomiting; however, persons infected with Bordetella pertussis sometimes experience atypical symptoms, making prompt recognition difficult and probably increasing infection transmission. All infants aged <6 months and any infants who have not yet received 3 doses of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine are especially vulnerable to B. pertussis infection. This report summarizes the investigations of two pertussis deaths that occurred i

HIV testing--United States, 1996.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the United States. HIV testing, in conjunction with counseling and other preventive services, can reduce the risk for HIV infection and appropriately link infected persons to treatment. To characterize HIV testing by region, state, and sex, CDC analyzed data from the 1996 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). This report summarizes the results of that analysis, which indicate a high degree of variability in HIV testing throughout the United States.

Rabies surveillance, United States, 1988.

The primary purpose of the annual report on rabies surveillance is to assist local and state public health officials in the planning of rabies control programs and to guide health professionals in evaluating the need for rabies postexposure prophylaxis in patients who are exposed to animals that may be rabid. In 1988, a total of 4,724 cases of animal rabies were reported by 47 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, similar to the total (4,729) for 1987. No human cases of rabies were reported. The South Atlantic, South Central, North Central, and Middle Atlantic states reported 81%

Trichinosis surveillance, United States, 1986.

Trichinella spiralis is a parasite of carnivorous animals that causes the disease trichinosis. In the United States, people become infected by eating poorly cooked pork products or wild animal meat that is infected with the parasite. Although fewer than 100 cases per year are reported to CDC, trichinosis continues to persist as a public health problem in this country. Public health officials believe that the reported cases represent only a fraction of the total number of cases, since many of the mild or asymptomatic infections are undetected or are misdiagnosed unless they are related to more …

Fertility in the United States.

From the postwar high of 3.8 births per woman at the peak of the baby boom, the total fertility rate in the United States has fallen to 1.8, where it has remained unchanged for nearly a decade. This below-replacement level of fertility has, in recent decades, characterized most Western countries, some of which have shown declines to well below 1.5 births per woman. Were it not for the continued infusion of immigrants, the U.S. population, which already shows the aging characteristic of low fertility, would stop growing and begin to decline before the middle of the next century. The low fertili…

Actinomycetoma in the United States.

Actinomycetoma (Madura foot) caused by Actinomadura madurae occurred in an Indiana factory worker. Previous cases of culture-proven actinomycetoma from the United States and reports of drug therapy were reviewed. Treatment with sulfonamides, streptomycin, dapsone, and other antimicrobial agents has been effective. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) therapy was effective in our case, but sulfadiazine was not. In vitro, SMZ was 16 times more active against the infecting strain of A. madurae than was sulfadiazine, and TMP was inactive, suggesting that our patient's satisfactory treatment mig…

United States cosmetic ingredient labeling.

United States federal regulations require ingredient listing on cosmetics labeled after November 30, 1976. Standardized ingredient nomenclature from a reference text will be utilized to minimize confusion which might arise if various synonyms for chemical names were used. This new information on cosmetics labeling will assist physicians in the diagnosis of cosmetic-related dermatoses. It should facilitate the patch testing procedure by enabling the dermatologist to focus attention on suspect ingredients early in the evaluation. Once the identify of offending ingredients in a cosmetic has been …
