AbstractA small community outbreak of measles in suburban Cook County, Illinois occurred in September-October 2025. Cook County Department of Public Health investigators identified four measles cases, including one unvaccinated pediatric index case, two vaccinated adult secondary cases, and an unvaccinated pediatric tertiary case. At least 99 individuals were exposed to measles, including 79 (80%) people exposed in emergency department waiting rooms on two separate dates. Incomplete exposure information was ascertained by public health investigators, which might have contributed to preventable

The effect and risks of the vaccination against TBE virus was calculated by means of formulas for Q and D. Q considers the relation between total risk of unvaccinated and vaccinated persons and D the yearly difference in risks between unvaccinated and vaccinated members of a community. In recommendable vaccinations Q should exceed 1,0 and D should be greater than 0. Vaccination against TBE was performed by 2 injections at an interval of 4 weeks followed by a 3rd injection after 9 months. No major side effects were observed in vaccinations of about 50,000 persons. After one injection only, the

BACKGROUND: From Mid-February to April 2011 one of the largest measles-outbreak in Flanders, since the start of the 2-dose vaccination scheme in 1995, took place in Ghent, Belgium. The outbreak started in a day care center, infecting children too young to be vaccinated, after which it spread to anthroposophic schools with a low measles, mumps and rubella vaccination coverage. This report describes the outbreak and evaluates the control measures and interventions.
METHODS: Data collection was done through the system of mandatory notification of the public health authority. Vaccination coverage

BACKGROUND: Data are limited on whether vaccination reduces post COVID conditions (PCCs) risk after less severe nonhospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study assessed whether COVID-19 vaccination protected against PCCs in persons with mild initial infections during Delta and Omicron variant predominance.
METHODS: This study utilized a case-control design, nested within the HEROES-RECOVER cohort. Participants aged ≥18 years with test-confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus disease 2 (SARS-CoV-2) between 28 June 2021 and 14 September 2022 were surveyed for PCCs

Previous infection with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) or COVID-19 vaccination can provide immunity and protection from subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection and illness. CDC used data from the VISION Network* to examine hospitalizations in adults with COVID-19-like illness and compared the odds of receiving a positive SARS-CoV-2 test result, and thus having laboratory-confirmed COVID-19, between unvaccinated patients with a previous SARS-CoV-2 infection occurring 90-179 days before COVID-19-like illness hospitalization, and patients who were fully vaccinated with an mRNA COVID-19 vacci

BACKGROUND: Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common reason for antimicrobial use, and tympanostomy tube placement (TTP) is the most common reason for surgery requiring general anesthesia in children. Ten-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) was introduced in Finland in 2010 for infants. We evaluated the indirect impact of PCV10 on these surrogate otitis outcomes in unvaccinated children.
METHODS: Using before-after design, unvaccinated children ineligible for National Vaccination Program (born January 2006 to May 2010) were followed-up during 2012-2016 (target cohort, age 1.5-7 y

BACKGROUND: We assessed human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine effectiveness (VE) against anal HPV among men who have sex with men (MSM) in 2018-2023.
METHODS: Residual anal specimens from MSM without HIV aged 18-45 years were tested for HPV. We calculated adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for associations between vaccination (≥1 dose) and quadrivalent vaccine (4vHPV)-type prevalence adjusting for city, race/ethnicity, and nonvaccine-type HPV prevalence, stratified by age group (18-26, 27-45 years). VE was calculated as (1 - aPR) × 100.
RESULTS: Among 2802 person

We examined whether live attenuated Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is effective in preventing West Nile virus (WNV) infection in the People's Republic of China. Three groups were recruited into the study: patients with Japanese encephalitis (JE), healthy controls vaccinated with live attenuated 2 SA14-14-vaccine against JE virus (JEV), and unvaccinated healthy controls. Serum samples were collected and screened for IgG antibodies against JEV by an indirect immunofluorescence assay. Positive samples were then analyzed for levels of antibodies against JEV and neutralizing antibodies against

Measles is a highly contagious, acute viral illness that can lead to complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and death. As a result of high 2-dose measles vaccination coverage in the United States and improved control of measles in the World Health Organization's Region of the Americas, the United States declared measles elimination (defined as interruption of year-round endemic transmission) in 2000. Importations from other countries where measles remains endemic continue to occur, however, which can lead to clusters of measles cases in the United States. To update surveillance data on

Data on characteristics and outcomes of coronavirus (COVID)-19 patients complicated with arterial thrombosis (AT) are scarce. Therefore, we carried out a systematic review (PRISMA, PROSPERO statements; PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) to identify risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment, and outcomes. We included publications from December 2019 to October 2020. Groups: (a) ischemic stroke, (b) thrombotic storm, (c) peripheral vascular thrombosis, (d) myocardial infarction, and (e) left cardiac thrombus or in-transit thrombus (venous system thrombus floating or attaching to the right h

Several decades into routine pediatric vaccinations worldwide, many vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain endemic and cause outbreaks with serious morbidity and fatalities, even in countries with long-term implemented pediatric vaccination programs. Schools play a critical role during childhood and adolescence not only for educational purposes, but also for the socialization and overall well-being of children and adolescents. Participation in most school activities usually requires close proximity and interaction among students in indoor settings, which facilitates the transmission of sev

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated introduction of a novel vaccine has provided researchers with the opportunity to investigate how to support vaccine acceptance and reduce hesitancy using novel approaches. This study aimed to understand the perceptions of COVID-19 unvaccinated Australian adults towards the COVID-19 vaccines and the factors influencing their vaccine decision-making. We also explored their attitudes towards vaccine communication strategies and the availability and quality of resources to support decision-making and preferences during future public health emergencies. The risk of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) infection after a tick bite remains largely unknown. To address this, we investigated the presence of TBEV in ticks detached from humans in an attempt to relate viral copy number, TBEV subtype, and tick feeding time with the serological and clinical response of the tick-bitten participants. Ticks, blood samples, and questionnaires were collected from tick-bitten humans at 34 primary health care centers in Sweden and in the Åland Islands (Finland). A total of 2167 ticks was received from 1886 persons in 2008-2009. Using a multiplex quantitative r

BACKGROUND: Japan currently lacks a data platform that can support quantitative assessments of the causal relationships between vaccines and adverse events. This study describes the development and application of the Vaccine Effectiveness, Networking, and Universal Safety (VENUS) Study to facilitate such assessments.
METHODS: A database was created by linking public insurance enrollees' claims data with vaccination records acquired from participating municipalities. To provide an overview of the study data, we produced descriptive statistics of sex, age, and vaccinations. We also conducted a

After 25 years of varicella vaccination in the United States, classic varicella and its complications have become an uncommon occurrence. The clinical manifestation of varicella among vaccinated persons is usually modified, with fewer skin lesions, mostly maculopapular, and milder presentation. However, the potential for severe manifestations from varicella still exists among both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons, and thus healthcare providers should keep varicella in the differential diagnosis of a maculopapular or vesicular rash. The prompt recognition and diagnosis of varicella is import

It is hypothesized that previous heterologous flaviviral exposure may modulate clinical illness among persons infected with West Nile virus (WNV). Little is known about the serological response in such persons. In summer 2003, a WNV outbreak occurred in Colorado, the location of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases (DVBID). DVBID employees, most previously vaccinated with yellow fever virus (YFV) or Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) vaccines, were studied to determine whether previous vaccination affected symptom development among those s

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has defined a list of adverse events of special interest (AESI) for safety surveillance of vaccines. AESI have not been adequately assessed following COVID-19 vaccination in patients with cancer contributing to vaccine hesitancy in this population. We aimed to evaluate the association between BNT162b2 and CoronaVac vaccines and the risk of AESI in adults with active cancer or a history of cancer.

BACKGROUND: Endemic measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, but imported measles cases continue to cause outbreaks. On June 20, 2011, 5 epidemiologically linked measles cases were reported to the Indiana State Department of Health. We investigated to identify additional cases and to prevent further spread.
METHODS: Case findings and contact investigations during the June 3, 2011-August 13, 2011 outbreak identified measles cases, exposed persons, and exposure settings. Laboratory confirmation included measles serology and reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. C

BACKGROUND: Although it is evident that zoster vaccination reduces postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) risk by reducing herpes zoster (HZ) occurrence, it is less clear whether the vaccine protects against PHN among patients who develop HZ despite previous vaccination.
METHODS: This cohort study included immunocompetent patients with HZ. The vaccinated cohort included 1155 individuals who were vaccinated against HZ at age ≥60 years and had an HZ episode after vaccination. Vaccinated patients were matched 1:1 by sex and age with unvaccinated patients. Trained medical residents reviewed the full medica

BACKGROUND: Brazil conducted mass rubella vaccination campaigns to meet disease elimination goals by 2010. An analysis of rubella vaccination opportunities was conducted to target population groups with concentrations of unvaccinated individuals.
METHODS: Rubella vaccination strategies for all 27 states were reviewed between 1992 and 2006. Yearly vaccination coverage was calculated by dividing number of doses of measles-rubella or measles-mumps-rubella vaccines administered by census estimates of target populations. For annual birth cohorts (1967-2005), percentages of persons not vaccinated p
