A case of an infectious urachal cyst that presented as a lower abdominal mass in a 44-year-old man is reported. There was no urinary tract infection. Cystoscopy revealed the dome retracted. All other investigations were normal without microscopic hematuria. Laparotomy revealed the mass attached to the small intestine because of infection. The mass was excised after partial resection of small intestine and partial cystectomy.

Two cases of rare urachal anomalies in the adult are described, including one acquired patent urachus and one giant urachal cyst. The presenting symptoms and signs included pyuria, fever, lower abdominal pain and palpable abdominal mass. The correct preoperative diagnosis was made after sonography. The clinical and radiographic features and magnetic resonance imaging are presented. Stone formation and the huge capacity of the urachal cyst are first reported. Excision of the urachal tract with resection of the bladder dome and cauterization of the cystic wall with stone removal were performed i…

Urachal cyst is a clinical malformation caused by failure of the allantois to obliterate during embryological development. Because of its rare presentation in adults, urachal cysts are often incorrectly diagnosed. Delay in diagnosis can cause complications such as peritonitis, fistula, sepsis, or even malignant manifestation. We report the case of a 19-year-old adult male, who presented with clinical features mimicking appendicitis. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed diagnosis of an infected urachal cyst, which was treated surgically.

The urachus is a thick fibrous cord that appears in the fifth month of pregnancy as a result of the allantois obliteration. Urachal cysts occur as a result of a defect in the obliteration of the duct, anomaly detected mainly in children and very rarely in adults. We present three cases of urachal cysts in adults, one of them detected during the study of abdominal pain and the other two, found incidentally during the study of other pathologies. In any case the possibility of urachal cysts was clinically suspected. Histologically, these lesions are lined by epithelium of urothelial type with exp…

The urachus is the remnant of the cloaca, which in adults attaches the bladder dome to the umbilicus. After birth it obliterates and presents as the midline umbilical ligament. Patent urachal anomalies are usually detected in childhood. In adults they occur very rarely and the presentation and diagnosis may be occasionally challenging. We present and discuss the case of an infected urachal cyst found in a 30-year-old adult.

The overinfected urachus cyst presents itself in quite different forms. In spite of the accuracy of ultrasound and abdominal CT scan, sometimes the diagnosis of this urachal abnormality is imprecise and even misleading. This article describes the transvesical endoscopic drainage of an infected urachal cyst with optimum result upon the treatment of this condition.

Embryologically, the allantois connects the urogenital sinus with the navel. Normally, the allantois is oblitered before the birth and is re … rm and may become quite large, presenting a low midline abdomen mass. Adenocarcinoma may occur in a urachal cyst, particularly at its vescical extremity. Cystis usually have an asymtomatic course. Occasionally these cystis can be discovered during sonographic examination. If the cyst becomes infected, signs of general and local sepsis will develop, sometimes i …

A 52-year-old woman complained of persistent discharge from an umbilicus which she had for 18 years. Abdominal X-ray showed a stone-like shadow measuring 5 x 3 cm at the 5th lumbar spine. Cystoscopic examination revealed a hole at the dome of the bladder and a ureteral catheter was inserted approximately 3 cm through the hole. Computerized tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a cyst communicating to the umbilicus and bladder. The preoperative diagnosis was a patient urachus associated with stone. Urachal cyst containing a stone was removed and partial cystectomy was perf…

UNLABELLED: In addition to the most likely diagnoses for umbilical signs in adults (umbilical hernia, metastatic tumour, endometriosis, congenital abnormalities such as umbilical-urachal sinus and gallstones retained or spilled at the umbilicus), the differential diagnosis should also include epidermoid cyst arising from the skin of the umbilicus. We describe the case of a young man who presented with a persistent umbilical discharge which was initially thought to be umbilical-urachal sinus, but later found to be a sebaceous cyst.
LEARNING POINTS: Umbilical sebaceous cysts are rarebut should

A 34-year-old para V woman was referred to our centre at 35+1 weeks of gestation for an assumed fetal malformation with prenatal renal impai … phy and colon contrast radiography. Explorative laparotomy identified the structure as a persistent urachal cyst with secondary obstruction of the upper urinary tract. After removal of the urachus with reconstruction of the bladder dome, renal function recovered completely while urine was drained continuously via suprapubic catheter. A voiding cystourethrogram …

The urachus is an embryologic remnant which degenerates after the birth. Defective obliteration of the urachus leads to urachal abnormalities. An infected urachal cyst is one of the urachal abnormalities and this pathology is rare in adult women. We report a case of 33-year-old woman with pelvic pain and dysuria who was diagnosed with infected urachal cyst. Infected urachal cyst is a rare pathology in adult women and this pathology should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen.

PURPOSE: Managing persistent and symptomatic urachal anomalies requires wide surgical excision. Such intervention is recommended to prevent symptom recurrence and complications, most notably malignant degeneration. However, traditional open excision is associated with significant morbidity and prolonged convalescence. We report our experience with the laparoscopic excision of urachal remnants as a less morbid, minimally invasive surgical alternative.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between October 1993 and December 1999, 4 patients with a mean age of 43.3 years who had a symptomatic urachal cyst under…
